The Arnold to replace The Donald on Celebrity Apprentice

I didn’t realize the new season had started. I’ll have to catch it on demand. I don’t remember who’s in the cast this time except I think I saw Vince Neil in there.

I had never seen it before but I thought it had been on for many seasons(?) and of course, it helped make Mr. Trump famous and gave us “you’re fired”. I wasn’t expecting much but sheesh, I can’t believe some people consider it “must see tv”.

I was channel surfing last night, and stopped at this show for about 10 seconds. One look at the “celebrities” was enough.

He…did not really say “Hasta la vista, baby. You’re terminated.” Did he?

Oh, my. I just found the clip. Looks like he says, “You’re terminated. Now, get to the chopper.”

He looks ridiculous with that dyed hair, too.

Clip

There were two firings.

In the first episode, he fired some blonde (that I didn’t know), with “You’re terminiated, Off to the Chopper” (and there really was a chopper)

In the second episode, he fired Carnie Wilson. “You terminated, Hasta la Vista, Baby”. Carnie on the way said “Off to the Chopper.”

Thanks, wow. Embarrassingly lame.

It’s been on since about 2004. I think there’s been a few years since the last one though. I watched the first several seasons and then I just started watching the Celebrity seasons.

What you see is what you get. It is what it is. It’s hokey reality TV. But most of my shows are on mid-season hiatus so it’s something to watch. Plus I’m really interested in how Arnie does. Is he being hokey, yes. Is it fun, to me, yes. Now I hope they don’t inundate us with his Schwarzteneggerisms but a few here and there are fine.

I’m interested to see how Boy George, Jon Lovitz and Lalia Ali do.

I watched the first two episodes last night and I enjoyed them. I liked Arnies presence but he’s always been bigger than life. I was a bit annoyed by Patrick (Arnies nephew) trying to egg on the drama but that’s always been part of the show so it’s to be expected.

I thought Tyra Banks did a great job and for the most part most of the contestants. It was kind of a bummer seeing Carnie Wilson booted on the second episode. I saw her on an episode of Celebrity Wife Swap and she seemed like a really nice person.

I was surprised by Boy George. I thought he had some good one liners.

I did like the men’s strategy in the first episode of having the big tough men, the football players, applying the make-up on the ladies to show that, “Hey if a big tough guy who knows nothing about make-up can apply it well then so can anyone.”

I remember when this show was actually somewhat entertaining back in the first couple of seasons (I quit watching it after that). Now, much like the creator himself, it has turned into a parody cartoon version of the original.

So in this version, what are they apprenticing for? I know the “celebrity” one is just to win money for charity, but Arnold isn’t even a businessman (?)

I did watch all the Trump ones but this just sounds even stupider.

Mark Burnett has become a parody cartoon version of himself. Do you know him personally?

Neither is Tyra Banks. She is a businesswoman.

Actually, he is. Biggly into real estate and other ventures.

Schwarzenegger is basically a businessman who makes movies on the side. He had already become a millionaire though real estate investment by the time he became famous as Conan, and in his autobiography Arnold stated that he’s made far more money through his business ventures than he has from his movies. And as John Mace said, not just in real estate either. He got a wild hair once and purchased a Boeing 747 so he could lease it to an airline. As far as I know it’s still flying.

Interesting, I had no idea. Maybe I’ll check out the second episode.

Yeah, actually he is a businessman, and was one prior to hitting it big as a body-builder. When he first came to the US he worked in construction as a bricklayer and he and Franco Columbu started Specialty European Bricklayers. He also operated a mail order business. THEN he became a world-famous bodybuilder, actor, and investor.

He also has a college degree (bachelor’s) in business and international economics from the University of Wisconsin. OK, so it’s not an MBA, but most MBA’s wish they were doing so well as Arnold.

Unlike the Donald, Arnold didn’t come from a wealthy family. He showed up knowing very little English and with very little money and built himself and his fortune up from there.

Differing from the regular Apprentice, the project manager of each winning task wins money for their favorite charity. I admit I’m watching this, and I’ve watched each previous season. Guilty pleasure, maybe?

I want Boy George to win. I absolutely love him, his personality, everything. He’s really witty and smart, something I think will surprise people. I’ve followed him his whole career, through all his personal ups and downs, recovery from drug use, the works. Have always loved him and found him to seem way more genuine than the typical star/celebrity.

In the first episode, which was a double episode, there was a scene where he was a little bothered by the fact that Vince Neil, who’s on George’s team, was drinking while they were in the studio writing a song for their task. George is sober in a very hard won way after having gone through rehab (maybe more than once). He didn’t make a big scene or anything about it at all, just mentioned matter of factly. Vince Neil’s response was it’s not like he was passed out with a bottle of vodka, it was “just wine” and besides, he’s “way over 21.” As a parting shot when George just walked away Neil said something like “this is America, it’s not Britain…In the 1960s” which made little sense to me, the last part, since George’s career started in the 80s. Figured Vince Neil either doesn’t know anything about Boy George (beyond who he is) or was just making a lame joke (possibly because: drunk). Anyway, I thought George came off looking nothing but a gentleman. Did I mention I’m rooting for him to win? I am. Either him or Carson Kressley, who like George is very witty and, also like George, I believe is a genuinely good person. I’d probably be ok with Lovitz winning, too. I’m trying to root for the women but so far they’re just annoying me.

Jon Lovitz was the PM for the first task and they won. I think the charity he was playing for is St. Jude’s Children’s Hospitals, which of course is a very worthy charity. He got $50,000 for the charity.

There was a moment of what to me looked like staged “drama” when during the first boardroom Arnold asked Jon Lovitz a question and when replying Jon called him “Arnold.” After he’d finished, Swarzenegger said something like, “We know each other. But I want to make something very clear. In here, you call me Governor.”

Whatever, meathead!

I think it’ll be a pretty good season, even though I don’t like Tyra Banks, who was one of Arnold’s “advisors” the other being his nephew (who sounds almost identical to Arnold). Hopefully they’ll switch up the advisors but the promos made it seem like it’ll be these two for the duration.

Am I the only one here who knows/remembers that Swarzenegger was also Governor of California?! That’s kind of a big thing (6th largest economy in the world).

OK, he’s a businessman AND a politician!

Bottom line - he’s been pretty darn successful at a lot of things.

So, I’m curious to understand what percentage, of this shows viewers, do you think are smart enough to recognize the twitter war between Arnold and Donald, is 100% manufactured to drive ratings?

It was decades too late for that. It helped halt and reverse his fading away, certainly, but in the 80s, he was inescapable.
