The Big Bang Theory, Season 9, Episode 3 (October 5, 2015) -- "The Bachelor Party Corrosion"

I am starting this thread in anticipation of tonight’s episode.

I am done with this show, once the reruns are no longer aired and I lose my dvd’s.

I can’t wait to see what happens with The Shamy.

I was gonna say that may have been Feynman’s actual van.

Now, I’m thinkin’ not so much.

According to the vanity card, that was Feynman’s van.

I thought this one was rather good. The boys on a road trip, trying to change a tire with SCIENCE! Sheldon channeling Freddie Mercury was hysterical. The supposed-to-be-funny-because-they’re-socially-inept racist jokes are getting tiresome though.

I also had a hankering for bacon. RIP, Moondance.

They were doing it wrong, and I don’t just mean setting fire to the van.

That was an improvement. That van breaking down was inevitable, though.

Funnier than I expected, but next week looks painful.

Penny’s been in California how long—ten, twelve years? And she still has a pet pig alive on a farm in Nebraska? :dubious:

A little funnier than the first two eppys, but I thought it strained credibility that they supposedly abduct Sheldon and Leonard and also got them to find their passports and take them along. Using the sign post as a lever should have gotten the nut off. I thought a better ending would have been for Penny to give them an obvious solution that they overlooked.

As soon as I saw him taking off the last lug nut (that may have been where the scene started) my first thought was “he’s not using a jack, the van is going to fall”. FTR, I usually loosen the lug nuts with the tire still on the ground, but not remove them. That’s where I thought they were going with it.

There is a precedent set for these guys not knowing anything about cars. Also, I’m A)Surprised that Howard couldn’t get the lug nut off with a 10 foot cheater bar (that he some how managed to get out of the ground) and why not have Raj do it, he’s the biggest one in the group and B)they didn’t realize that thermite would set the van on fire. It was going to drip on the tire. Again, as soon as I saw them collecting rust, I knew they were going there.

Also, I’d be surprised if they could light the thermite with a match.

Me too about the van falling thought.

Mind you this ep at least seemed a bit more fun and had some nerd fan-service, but uh yeah, no car expert here, but I was taught to jack it up first, then partly loosen all going round, then finish loosening and remove them one at a time. From there on the only way to enjoy it was to completely turn off brain and appreciate that at least science was referenced. Okay before that. Must … not … think.

Glad it Dad said the pig … I thought he was going to tell her that her mother was not out with her brother after all but …ah … well … uh … its a real nice Rototiller … and Mom’s at a new home now, a better place …

Well, that was a weak one.

Well, you also want the cheater bar to be horizontal so when you hang from it (or more likely stand on it) your weight is applying force perpendicular to the bar. Better still, put the cheater bar on the other end of the tire iron (so you’re lifting the bar to loosen the nut) then put the jack under the end of the bar; use the vehicle’s weight to your advantage. If that doesn’t loosen it, it ain’t coming loose.

Agreed (with pulling up on it), but I’ll give them that they lose the comedic value of having Howard hanging from it that way.

IME, I’ve found the best thing to do is to (carefully) stand or put one foot on the wrench and push down while grabbing the wheel well and pulling up in the car. You can exert more downward force than you weigh when you do that. I’ve had friends that are stronger (and bigger) than me surprised and how quickly I can pop a tire off after they’ve been struggling for 10 minutes at it. Of course, I’ve changed a lot of tires over the years and these are usually people that have either never done it or only done it once or twice. When you have to get a tire off a 10 year old E250, you learn some tricks.
Protip: don’t spray anything on it until you’ve tried everything else or you risk the wrench slipping off and hurting yourself, and when you do spray something on it, don’t just go and hose the thing down. Try to avoid the outside of the nut.

Is it me, or does Penny look like she’s aged 20+ years since last season? I don’t know if it’s the short haircut or what, but…man…she looks old*. So do the guys (and Howard really needs to get rid of the dumb Beatles haircut), but the rest of them aged slowly. Penny did it all at once between seasons.
*And not in a good way

Anyone who uses thermite to loosen a lug nut deserves what he gets. I expected better of an engineer.

Are these guys cursed on road trips, or what?

I loved Sheldon’s wild caterwauling ! Fun stuff!

We are the Champions!
