The Big Game: State vs U

Dayum, that was a sweet ass game last night. Too bad I have to go to work in a few.

And…from the other side of the aisle: what the heck was that? Not sure who that was in the white uniforms, but I’m pretty sure the Buckeyes didn’t actually show up.

Congrats to the Gators on a great game!

Have to agree on the reffing…it was terrible, and heavily…HEAVILY slanted towards Florida…not that it made any difference. OSU surely didn’t lose the game because of poor officiating…they simply got outplayed in every conceivable way. Still, the reffing was a joke. Of the calls the Refs didn’t call on UF: two intentional grounding calls, that were blatantly obvious. Horrendous spots, and the non overturn of the touchdown where he was clearly a full half-yard shy of the end-zone. UF had the play clock at :00 for TWO SECONDS, snapped the ball, and still did not get a delay of game. OSU had to BEG for the most obvious false start I’ve ever seen. Heck, the QB was false starting ALL night, with no call (flinching back as if he had the ball).

Still, none of that matters, as OSU had absolutely no answer for UF’s offensive game plan, and they just were overpowered on the other side, where Troy Smith very rarely had time to throw…and when he did, there was no one open. All the credit in the world to Meyer and the Gators.

(Glad I’m not emotionally invested in the Buckeyes, though I do cheer for them…)

Sorry, Bob, I’m going to have to ask for a cite on that. I have seen that quote, but it’s been attributed to Jarvis Moss, who is a defensive end for UF. I did see Urban Meyer in the post game saying that “Ohio State is a great football team”. Jarvis Moss is quoted as saying that “four or five SEC teams could have won this game”. Maybe not the classiest of things to say, but he’s a young kid pumped on emotion, not the coach.

The referees were spotty and seemed to be unsure of themselves. I wouldn’t have been upset if they’d called back that play and spotted the ball on the half yard line, although the replays were inconclusive and the best angle was obscured by linemen from both sides. Still, then it would have been third and goal from the half yard line. Nothing from the game last night gave me the impression that Florida wouldn’t have just scored on one of the two ensuing plays. Still, crazy things can happen, just ask Tony Romo.

That play definitely looked short, although I don’t recall the exact spot. There was one other favorable to UF spot that I recall, one or two that were favorable to Ohio State, and one or two that I thought were unfavorable to UF. Those tend to happen, and I don’t believe that they affected the outcome.

Troy Smith and the OSU offensive line seemed to be the biggest effect on the outcome, and the inability of Ohio State to stop the Gators, who don’t really have a great offense although they do have a lot of weapons. Troy Smith seems like a decent guy, but he probably left a lot of money on that field tonight, in terms of draft selection and bonuses. I’d be nervous about taking him with a top five pick after that game. And I’d be extremely nervous about drafting either OSU tackle.

My only contribution to this discussion:

My jaw dropped at halftime when the OSU band took the field and played the theme song from TITANIC!!

I couldn’t believe my ears. Holy irony, Batman!!

You’re right, my mistake. I misread the article this morning. So a player is a jerk, not the coach. Though it was shameful how they whined and politicked to get in this game in the first place.

Maybe, but they were correct. I think it’s shameful how many bought into the 'Michigan and Ohio State are the two best teams in the country and no one else can give them a game" meme. Or the “Boise State is not up to par with other teams” thing. Even though my Gators won last night, I still would have preferred to see a playoff of 4, 8 or 16 teams.

Yeah, that was definitely a :dubious: moment.

But even if they hadn’t been down 20 points, who the hell picks that song for the start of a halftime show??

As you pointed out, it’s called the game changing performance, not the season changing performance.

I think it was that cool flip that Auburn’s Trey Smith executed at the end the play that sealed the deal for Auburn. Nice!

As for naming Oregon State or UCLA, why? Just because they both beat USC? If any team other than constantly overrated USC or Notre Dame had already lost to Oregon State, they wouldn’t have been close enough to #1 for the UCLA game to matter.

College football quiz of the week: What team beat both the number 1 and number 3 teams as rated in the final poll?

…That would be AUBURN!

I don’t recall UF whining. The voters did quickly abandon the idea that Michigan was #2 after USC lost. Texas whined their way into the Rose Bowl a couple of years ago, so it wouldn’t be the first time.

Yes, very shameful. “We’re a good team, and we deserve to play in the national championship.” Terrible. I can’t imagine any other coach wanting to win a championship. I knew this Urban guy was trouble.

Michigan obviously should have been in that game. Then, at least, the game may have been close and somewhat exciting. As it turned out, we ended up with two blowouts - USC 32, UM 18 and OSU 14, UF 41. I blame Urban Meyer’s shameful behavior for the humiliating ass-whoopings experienced by the infinitely superior Big Eleven schools.

Is it legal to grab a guy’s shirt and hold on to it on a kick return? Just asking - thought I saw a hold on Ginn’s great runback on the first play. Number 8 clinging desperately to Number 1.

Hmmmm… Number 1. Right.

QB passer rating: Chris Leak = 128.3 and Troy Heisman = 35.3. Stupid Urban.

No, you’re not the only one. They’re way better than that. Personally, I blame the referees.

With apologies to the late Lloyd Bentsen… I know Ohio State. Ohio State is my team. I have friends who went to Ohio State. The team that played last night was no Ohio State team.

Seriously, congrats to all our DoperGators. Your team ruled the field last night, no question.

Somebody with a severely undeveloped appreciation of the finer points of irony, bad karma, and the potential of things biting you in the ass.

Finishing the season undefeated and ranked in the top ten(likely the top five) is second tier?As far as Oklahoma being “off” I cant say since I didnt watch the game(heard about it,sounded like a peach of a game.),but you can say the same thing about any losing effort.Florida beat an “off” OSU team,OSU beat an “off” U of M team,UCLA beat an “off” USC team,Kent State beat an “off” Bowling Green team, lotsa teams beating “off”.
And no,I don’t think Boise State will win the title, but HOORAY for them for being the only undefeated.
Congrats to the Gators, and my unsincere condolences to the Buckeyes.

The Washington Post’s Jim Litke thought differently a few weeks ago…

They deserved a win last night because OSU stunk the place out. But they didn’t deserve to be there.

Thanks, everything I saw from Ohio State players and staff, we’re very classy in defeat. No excuses, no whining. OSU’s fans may be down on Tressel right now, but the guy seems a class act.

It’s a shame that Ginn didn’t make it back in the game. I really felt for this young man, to make it to this point, put his stamp on the game at the beginning (Damn, he was FAST!) and then not get the chance to try and help his team. And I ~almost~ felt sorry for all of the OSU fans that spent their hard earned geld to get to that game and then see their team treated like that. Almost. I did feel sorry that little boy who was crying on his daddy’s shoulder that they kept showing near the end of the game.

Why not?

While we’re at it, let’s try to think of the last time that OSU beat an SEC team in a Bowl.

OSU & UM were both exposed as the frauds they were this year. That’s what happens when you play such a weak schedule.

Yeah, it almost made me sad to come to work today because I knew I’d be the only happy one (Lone UF fan working in an Ohio office…ElzaHub’s a Florida alum). I almost feel bad for my co-workers. Almost :D.

Just to be extra evil, I sent my kid to daycare in his University of Florida outfit  . His sitter cracked up.

OSU just proved that they are NOT the powerhouse everyone thought they were. I think they just got very, very lucky this season.

E.

I honestly have no idea how you can claim they didn’t deserve to be there. I can see how you can argue that another team (USC, Boise) deserved a shot as well, but I have no idea how one can claim that FL didn’t equally deserve to be in the title game after beating the eventual #2, #3, #15, #23, and #25 teams.

The irony of an excuse peddler knocking another team’s coach as whinning his way into a championship . . . . unbelievable. I was expecting a parade of excuses from the Big 11 Ten appologists but some of these are too much for  . Deserved to win but not to be there? Are you out of your ever loving mind, man? Do you realzie how foolish that sounds? Who should have been there then? Michigan? And you can say that in hindsight with a straight face. OSU got taken behind the woodshed. Leak completed his first nine passes for just shy of a hundred yards, in the first quarter. Did the officials do that? As for the officiating, rewatch the Ginn runback and see Reggie Wilson get held sd Ginn slipped by. Didn’t see a flag on that one. Tryo Smith found himself on his ass five times. OSU had less than a hundred yards TOTAL offense. They got tanned.

Go Gators!

Oh, and Big Bad Vodoo Lou, we haunted Gainesville at the same time. 96 was my first year as well.
