The Big Game: State vs U

Jesus, I never would have guess Florida would smash OSU like this. And I even thought that OSU might be a little overrated after that asswhippin Michigan took.

And THIS is the reason that I didn’t want a OSU-Michigan rematch in the championship… between the lackluster Big Ten and the month and a half layoffs, this sort of thing should be way less shocking than it seems to be for a lot of people.

Much congratulations to any Florida fans/alums out there in SDMB-land.

Alright, alright…you guys were right, I admit! Heck of performance by Florida. Hopefully, this will edge us even just a little bit closer to a playoff system.

What a bowl season it’s been!

Christ. 41-14 final. Absolutely stunning.

Troy Smith wound up contributing a net +6 yards. Ow.

IT’S GREAT!

TO BE!

A FLORIDA GATOR!

Yea yea, y’all better recognize! I went to UF from 1996 to 2000 and 2001 to 2003, and I’m just psyched. In fact, usually I couldn’t care less about sports in general, but the SEC is by far the toughest conference, and I’ll always root for the Gators. They won their first National Championship my freshman year (1996-97), and ten years later, they’ve done it again.

It’s unbelievable to me that the Gators had one complete bullshit touchdown, and it didn’t even matter! It was complete domination from 1st to 4th quarter. Wow!

Go Gators!

the real question is
who looked more pathetic-
ND or OSU

Congrats to Boise State.

Wow. That was the worst-looking performance I’ve ever seen in a MNC game. Worse than OU at the Ashlee Simpson Bowl. At least everyone expected them to lose.

While you have to give credit to OSU for going undefeated, I never thought they were one of those teams that dominated others. Yeah, they came to Austin and beat my 'Horns, but we played like shit and Gonzalez was the MVP that day, not Ginn or Smith. The next week they struggled against Northern Illinois or whomever it was before pulling away. Troy Smith was basically the leader of the best team. Solid, mistake-free guy, but look at Russell at LSU. I think Smith got a lot of looks because of the hosing Vince Young got last year. (“Since we screwed over that Black QB, let’s make sure this one doesn’t get jerked!”)

Nice work by UF - they didn’t believe the hype and took out their frustrations on OSU. Good for the Gators. I love how Fox started their montage of BCS games with the Boise State game. I’ll bet the Fox execs are ruing forking out all of the cash for what was basically a very uninteresting set of games, save the BSU-ou game.

When do you graduate?

Ahhh c’mon. I kid, I kid! Congrats, UF!

For what, winning a Division I football game? You can’t possibly tell me that you honestly think Boise State deserves to win a national championship. They beat an off Oklahoma team in the bowl. Wonderful. UCLA beat USC, should they be champs? Don’t get me wrong, Boise State appears to be building a decent program. The next step is for them to start scheduling tough opponents during the season. Strength of schedule isn’t just a cute term, it’s a good general indicator of team quality and it’s essential for long term program building. Until then, they’re going to be stuck in the second tier.

notre dame will alway look more pathetic. Even when they “win”*.

The game tonight reminded me very much of the USC drubbing of Oklahoma a couple years ago for the title. I’m starting to think the Heisman is cursed!

Which brings me to my last, unrelated point: The Pontiac Game Changing Performance play. What utter crap! The winning play had no impact on the season whatsoever! (I know, I know. Its called “Game Changing”) Hell, the team that came out on the losing end of the play won the title! It should have gone to Oregon St. or UCLA! Totally changed the complextion of the entire season…

Eh. Whatever. Glad the Gators won. Ey, oh way to go, Ohio.

*code for “when the other team folds like the Japanese Olympic Origami team in the forth quarter and blows the lead with Pop Warneresque play”

Got two degrees, and currently at USF working on my third.

Bwaaaahahahahahaha! Sure.

Ohio State: 8 first downs, 82 total yards (no, that’s not a misprint)

Heisman winner: 6 yards

I think the media has a love affair with the Big 10. First the OSU-Michigan rematch outcry. And then the announcers in this game: “the only reason Ohio State lost is that Ginn didn’t come back into the game.”

And Florida, enough with the “no respect” angle. “No one thought we belonged”. You guys were #2 in the country and won the SEC! Not another Boise State.

Am I the only one who’s not overwhelmed with Florida’s performance? They played solid, mistake free football, but I’m not sure I give them all the credit for OSU’s poor performance.

OSU was totally and utterly inept. I’d say Tressel was soundly out coached, but that implies that he actually did some coaching. They didn’t make a single adjustment and I’m not sure I saw them come with a single new wrinkle in their game plan.

The Florida pass rush made some plays, but they didn’t dominate. Troy Smith often had insane amounts of time to throw, but Tressel repeatedly ran plays with only two receivers downfield. Hell, Illinois could have shut down that game plan. There wasn’t a single pass to a back out of the backfield or a screen pass or late release from a tight end. All classic methods to use a pass rush against itself and slow them down. I can’t count the number of times Smith should have broke the pocket and scrambled too.

Either the loss of Ginn really took OSU out of it’s game plan, or they just didn’t have an offensive game plan at all.

When they tried to run the ball OSU was fairly successful, and of course they totally abandoned it when the game was still within reach.

Defensively OSU looked over matched, especially in the secondary, they were painfully slow to react to everything, especially in the first quarter. I think that long lay off might have really took the edge off their defense. Florida did a great job of playing almost mistake free football, but with the consistently great field position OSU gave away they didn’t really get put into many tough situations.

Awful, awful performance.

Because he played defense too, apparently.

My favorite moment of the game: The OSU band opening up their halftime routine with the theme to Titanic.

Basically, OSU came ready to have the trophy handed to them, and Florida came ready to fight for it.

An addendum: My last post was not meant to take anything away from Florida. They just convincingly won the national championship. They ARE the better team, by definition.

What ungracious comments by Florida’s coach, saying they’ve played lots of better teams than them. True, OSU played their worst game of the decade. But the officials did all they could to hand the game to Florida. That first half touchdown that was reviewed: the runner was clearly down with the ball half a yard short. And they blow the call on the field AND on review?? And the fourth down OSU attempt that fell short in the first half- terrible spot. I’m not sure they made it, but it looked to me the ball either got to the 30 or was no more than a few inches short.
