the blizzard of 2003

ukulele ike, you better wax up the sled. in the '96 storm a woman went into labour in south phila. she was put on a sled and towed 6 blocks until an ambulance could get to her. i’m sure she was thrilled about the neighbour with the video camera getting it all on film.

a co worker had her son in her livingroom in '96 because they couldn’t get out of the house. mom and son did well. the rug however…

This college girl has a snow day!

Weather report from Long Island, NY (55 min. east of Penn Station, by train.): It’s officially snowing like a mofo & will continue as such until, my father tells me, midnight tonight. Wowee, I wonder if I’ll be off tomorrow as well…

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we exceeded 2’ of snow by midnight.

Unfortunately for me, I work in York and live in the burbs. I have a long steep driveway and I didn’t even try to get out this morning. Hopefully the guy I pay will along sometime to plow. At lease, before tomorrow.

I live a block from the local fire department, so you would think they’d pay special attention to this block. But I just looked out, after the alarm went off, and saw the truck running lights and sirens at maybe 10mph as it pushed the snow with its front bumper.

Let’s be careful with those kerosene heaters, folks.

Meanwhile, I shovelled a path for my beagle to do her duty, and already my back is saying I’m done for the day. And the car still needs to be cleaned off. I may not make it to work for a few days.

Yeah, I was wondering how people walk their dogs in this weather…don’t they, like, sink in the snow?

I live in Carlisle, PA, and we got socked hard. Even if we shoveled the snow (which Airman did last night), there’s nowhere to put it. His car is completely covered, and mine may as well be, because some dink parked his car in the middle of the street so the borough can’t come through and plow it, so we can’t go anywhere anyway. Suggestions for the dink are welcome.

Poor Joy (my beagle) is only 11" at the shoulder. I think we have more than 24" here with drifts. She must have really needed to go this morning, because I opened the door and (after a moments hesitation) she walked off the top step and right into it. She sank right into it, realized she was in trouble, and tried to back out again. Poor thing.

I shovelled a path to the shrubs where there is usually some grass showing. She stayed behind me the whole time. When she stands on her hind legs to look around, she still can’t see over the top of it.

Meanwhile I’m sure my neighbors think I’m nuts for shovelling out a path in my back yard while my car lies buried.

I went out at midnight last night, and again about an hour ago, to get an early start on clearing out my car. Turns out I lucked out big time.
On the side of the street where my car is, there is basically nothing. Some drifts, but my car is basically clear. The other side of the street - they are up to their windows.
Here’s hoping the wind doesn’t change direction…

Any reports from our Rhode Island contingent? My sister is supposed to be flying out of Providence tomorrow. A much-needed vacation to my sun-drenched city. It’d be the heigth of annoyance for her to be stuck in a blizzard. Any chance she might make it out tomorrow?

Bluesman’s office is talking about sending a Humvee out to collect him so he can get to work, and Anne Arundel county has already cancelled school for tomorrow. I’m contemplating if I should attempt to make it into downtown Baltimore tomorrow morning.

Oh, and Lola, it’s really very amusing watching my poor pup trying to do her business in the snow. She can’t squat to poop, so she just kind of stands there with a distressed expression on her face.

Awwwwwwwwww!
:stuck_out_tongue:

:o blushes at MsRobyn’s use of dink – I think I was taught a very different meaning for that word than you were.

Regardless, in the storm of '96, I remember that the city of Harrrisburg organized to have all cars that were blocking roads towed to the City Island, where they were guarded by police officers until the owners could pay the fines. So your inconsiderate or otherwise helpless neighbor will likely have to pay the piper anyway.

The worst seems to be done in downtown Balto. Spouse is out shoveling snow off the boat - it’s so deep and heavy, it’s causing us to list to port (that means lean to the left) I’m supposed to wait until he wants my help and listen for a loud splash in case he falls overboard.

I’m assuming when he gets the boat cleared, we’ll dig our way to the showers and get cleaned up. I have no idea when we’ll get to the parking lot.

I don’t think we’re even going to attempt going anywhere today. Dave got up to feed and run the dog a bit, then got right back into bed. The snow is 3/4 of the way up the mailbox support, and there is another 8" of snow on the sidewalk that was shovelled less than 12 hours ago.

I’m annoyed with this. Dave told me it doesn’t snow here.

Whoo! Snow day for Pammipoo! Even though Boston only has an inch and a half or so now, my boss didn’t want me driving home tonight in what could be much worse. So, I get today off. Add in the Friday I got off for my car shit, my Sat and Sun weekend, and my day off tomorrow, I’m pulling a 5 day weekend. 6 if it’s still snowing Wednesday…

Life is good.

Right now I’d say it’s pretty much up in the air (no pun intended.) It’s snowing like a sumbitch right now and we haven’t even really hit the brunt of the storm yet. The forecasters aren’t backing down from their forecasts of 14 to 20 inches and it’s not supposed to stop until tomorrow morning. I suppose a lot depends on when she’s supposed to fly out, but if it’s early in the morning, I wouldn’t count on it.

You know, the most annoying thing is having to dodge those pesky wampas and avoid getting your Rebel bases smashed by Imperial walkers.

MrVisible, last I heard (I think around noon) TF Green was still open, but many flights were being canceled because they have connections at airports that are already closed. They’re advising people to call before they leave in case they decide to close.
Hopefully, they’ll be open tomorrow.

Will you guys quit hogging all the snow? Jeez… We’ve had maybe 8" of snow here in St. Paul this winter, and that’s spread out over six snowfalls.

Wow… all this, and I’ve never even seen snow… well, real snow at least. I saw about a half inch in Florida in 1990ish, but it was gone by afternoon. That’ll all change summer after next when I move to Omaha
