But notice that ***nowhere ***in the ancient meaning does it render the individual somehow immune or excepted from the authority of the body politic. It just means he’s not a particiant in its decisionmaking – a mere subject as it were.
The is en antire pit thread devoted to the subject of how being an idiot very much does not disqualify one from having/using a gun. Nor, apparently, does mental instability, emotional problems or blindness.
To me, it looks like a gun at hand actually lowers IQ by a significant amount, compounded by a sort of D-K-effect amplification. The Bundies, et al, have done exactly the opposite of to disabuse me of that notion.
Just passed through Burns yesterday and noticed a couple of things. On the east end of town, as you head toward Douglas or Malheur counties, there is a colorful billboard with a small bird on it that says “We are Harney County. We have our own voice.”
But what perplexed us were two American flags flying, each with a purple ribbon flying beneath the flag. The ribbon is about the width of a stripe on the flag; under one, it was nearly the length of the flag, under the other, the ribbon was dwarfed by the much larger flag.
Anyone know what this signifies, if anything? Is it unrelated to recent local events?
It could mean any number of things, take your pick. With all the wildfires out west this year, I’m guessing wildland firefighters.

No, they were purple or indigo, attached to the rope right under the US flag, where one would fly a state or other companion flag. Perhaps more like slender banners than ribbons.

With a quick Googling of this (no offense meant at all, just for my ignorant curiousity and what terms I searched, fwiw), I came acrossthis site(selling the streamers/ribbons) which says that there is a custom that flying said colored streamer(s) signifies a mourning of death/serious incident(s) to fallen police, clergy, or otherwise notable class(es) of ‘public professionals’, in so many words. Just kinda broadly guessing - here’s another but in black. Possible the streamers eschereal is asking about were sun/weather-faded so they look more dark purplish than shiny-new black? Seen such happen with black nylon stuff sometimes myself.
Or also possibility of* either* color being used as I saw for sale at one of the sites a full-fan (like a hanging half-circle, I guess) that used both purple and black to denote a mourning event/place. No doubt there some variance in appearances of said stuff, but it would seem the overall idea (even though) I am postulating based on quick peeks through Googled stuff… YMMV on interpretation of those few sites, of course.
