See here. It was LaVoy Finicum and he drove, not flew. I’ve seen other sources that said Randy Bundy was the unnamed person who accompanied him, but I’m not sure where that info comes from.

ETA: According to Raw Story, Finicum later confirmed it was Randy Bundy.

The fine is currently in excess of a million, up to 1.4, depending on if it is retroactive. At this point, if the authorities catch Bundy off the refuge and bring him before Judge Grasty, and he refuses to pay the fine (that is, does not claim to be unable to pay yet willing to negotiate), he can be cited for contempt of court and given a nice room with no bail for an indeterminate period of time.

One of the stories said that he was there with his gang, and they were of course armed, so I’m sure the popo didn’t want to risk the morons starting a firefight; but goddammit, how about on the road back to the refuge, afterward?

I don’t think that blocking roads will close off the refuge, since these shitheels all seem to have 4WD trucks. But I don’t see why they still have heat, power and water at the refuge. Maybe there are sensitive scientific instruments that the biologists don’t want to get turned off, or samples in a fridge, or something. If not, kill the power and water and freeze the bastards.

Police shut off power at BLM fire station near refuge

Police have disconnected the electricity to a building in Frenchglen – at the far end of the nature reserve – to prevent militants from moving to a new place, according to sources close to the investigation.

John Witzel, whose Frenchglen ranch is next to the fire station, said he and other residents are concerned because they’ve been told water wasn’t drained from the pipes or the firetruck before the power was turned off. Temperatures have regularly been below freezing there and he and others said such conditions could cause extensive damage.

“We watched them do it yesterday,” he said Thursday afternoon. “That would be really destructive and would destroy the pipes, the water heaters and the pumps.”

I don’t see why not. No one would question the propriety of deploying them to help out with flood or a forest fire or something, even if it happened on federal land. The USG owns federal land, but it’s still part of Oregon’s territory politically, isn’t it? Anyone allowed to live on it could (if otherwise qualified) vote in Oregon elections.

The difference from a fire is that they are armed. That’s why the military can sometimes be deployed within the US. I’m only speculating here of course, I don’t know the real answer.
