Well, those of you who missed last night, too bad! - We got Cho’gall down!
Nah, just kidding. I think we had 5 85s on line at one point, but no tanks - Moobird popped on for a few minutes but then was gone before I had a chance to say hello. So folks went off to do their own thing.
I did get RDF’d into ZG for only the second time, so got that achievement and a cool helmet/headdress upgrade. Keyne’s gonna look pretty cool if I manage to collect the rest of the ZA/ZG healing plate set. Also I hadn’t realized there is a long quest chain in SV after you do ZG - but I was a disappointed in the rewards after going through the whole thing. You get a pet, about 160 gold (if I added correctly) and that’s about it.
I also got three more Tol’Vir dig sites, so I’m only a couple more away from having my Ring of the Boy King…
Yeah, Keyne, Kahmu and myself were on last night, but no one else showed. When it got to 10+ minutes after the hour, I figured that we weren’t going to have a guild event (boo!), so I logged out of WoW and went and did a few grown-up things.
Still, Kalathan’s gear is getting better. To wit:
I got Kalathan’s rep up to Exalted with the Dragonmaw Clan, so bought Boots of Sullen Rockfrom the Dragonmaw quartermaster (they’re really tanking boots, but it’s still a DPS upgrade from what I was wearing). Plus the way I keep dying in instances, I figure extra armor and stamina can’t hurt.
I looted Jungle Striders during our guild ZA run last Monday night, which was a nice upgrade.
Finally, I got the Mark of Khardrostrinket from Grim Batol, which was a minor upgrade over the Harrison Jones strenghh ticket that I was still toting around.
That gives Kal an item level of 350, so I’m getting raid-ready!
I saw that someone (Bird?) put a guild even on the calendar tonight, so I hope people can make it. I’d be nice to have 2 tanks and 2 heals so we can maybe pug any extra dps and take a crack at BoT or something else; if not we can run through ZA and/or ZG. I’ve upgraded my ring (Ring of the Boy King from archeology) and the VP boots, so I think I only have one 346-level item left!
I’d love to join in, but sadly, tonight starts my week on at work, so I’ll be on very sparsely this week. Here’s hoping you guys get a few good runs of some kind in though.
Let’s start up a new raid list for Cata…I sense that we are getting close to fruition:
Please only link the level 85 toon(s) that you plan on using for the raid (you can use your alts in other guilds as fillers also, but would like to get guild credit as much as possible), along with their role (Tank, DPS, Healer), the night(s) you prefer (although we usually do Monday nights, 9pm server time), and the time zone you are in: The Cataclysmic Burning Dog Legion 10-man Raid List
I mostly do PvP though, and as a result my PvE gear is only passable on the rogue, and pretty bad on the priest (just have some reputation rings and the tailor purples for the priest). If we are going to start guild raiding though, I’ll suck it up and start grinding for better gear for whatever character is needed.
Skammer - Keyne / Heals/DPS(sorta) / M,W,Fri 8-11 server time
I could get my priest (Kene) raid-ready fairly quickly but I’d rather use him for dps than healing now; I can’t really get into the priest healing since Cata.
Lurker, it would be nice to have a rogue in our raid group; I don’t think we’ve had one regularly before. Although, come to think of it, we don’t really have a priest anymore either since Jarryn and Tom Scud haven’t been around.
I rarely hear that it would be nice to have a rogue. Apparently, a lot of the cataclysm fights seem to favor ranged dps. As far as raiding, I’ve only done BH (yes, I know it barely qualifies as a raid) and I noticed I’m damn near useless during the splash phases as I can’t get close enough to do damage during that time.
Regardless, I’ve had that rogue forever and I won’t give up on him. If we need heals, though, I’ll resurrect (ha!) the priest and give it a shot. I have not done any cataclysm pve healing yet. If it comes down to it, I prefer discipline healing, but recognize that they are a little weak when it comes to raid healing (as opposed to tank healing).
I haven’t played Disc, but my understanding is that they’ve buffed the ability of Disc to group-heal, much as they’ve done with paladins. There was a conscious effort to allow any healing class to be versatile and do either single- or multiple-target heals (although still some classes are easier to do one or the other).
The only thing we don’t really need in our raid group is more paladins :), so any other class you bring is a bonus.
We had a 5-man last night including Mister Rik (Kelreida) who was brand-new to heroics (or Cata dungeons completely?) and specced for tanking, so we took him to heroic Throne of Tides. The group was Flightless Bird’s druid Moobird going feral dps, Kel pally tanking, me pally healing, and Yeti and Kalathan pally dpsing. Yes, that’s right, a druid and four pallies.
Props to Mister Rik for being willing to tank for the first time, in a heroic no less. Nothing like jumping into the deep end!

Heh, thanks. I was hopelessly lost, but y’all did all right giving me directions. Still wish I could figure out what kept killing me when I was on the Blightbeasts. I’d be at about 50% health, then bang, dead.
One issue I was having, which I mentioned in Vent, was that I use a totally different keybind setup (at least as far as how the 1 through = keys are set up) when in Prot spec than what I use for Ret. Since the previous entirety of my paladin dungeon experience (in Wrath) was as Ret, both on Keliraeda and my human pally, Eilyssana, my left hand wanted to instinctively keep drifting into “Ret position”. I originally tried to come up with a similar setup when I switched Keli from Ret to Prot, but the toolsets are so different that I just couldn’t make it work and had to come up with a whole new setup that worked for me.
But yeah, I’d never entered a Cata dungeon at all, except to hand in the various dungeon breadcrumb quests where the turn-in NPC was standing right inside the entrance. And I’d never tanked anything, anywhere, on any toon.
So anyway, now I have my first 70 Valor Points, but who knows when I’ll get more. I’d rather get familiar with the Cata dungeons (and with tanking) via guild runs before I test the waters of the RDF, but with my erratic work schedule it’s hard to say how often I’ll be able. Keli also still needs to do the Twilight Highlands quests and grind some Dragonmaw (?) rep. Probably should have put on her Hyjal tabard for that run last night too, to bump her a bit closer to Exalted there - I think there’s some tanking rep gear there, anyway.
Is that stage 2 of the last boss (the defend-Neptulon thing)? Were you standing and fighting them? Because I always understood that the tank’s job on that stage is to kite like crazy and only stand still long enough to make sure you have aggro on everything.
And yeah, I think there’s a tank cloak in Hyjal-exalted.
Yeah, that’s the one. I was trying to kite those things, but I could hardly even tell if they were moving when I would move away from them. They seemed to move quickly enough before I attacked them, but once I had aggro and tried to get them to follow me, they sort of just bobbed their heads up and down and moved toward me at a glacial pace. I managed to snag two of them, and I knew there was at least one more around somewhere, but I was just really unsure if the first two were actually following when I moved away. And I was afraid to get too far away from them, in case I lost aggro.
So I’d fight them and my health would slooooowly drop down to around 50%, and then I’d lose all the rest in the blink of an eye with no clue what happened.
ETA: Anyway, I’m going to do a bit of reading up to better familiarize myself. I went into this one with no advance warning (i.e. not planning on doing a dungeon at all), so had no idea what to expect.
Yes, it was probably unfair of us to ask you to start tanking right away on unfamiliar instances - and heroic ones at that. We probably should have asked Moobird to tank, or even me. I hadn’t tanked any Cat instances yet, but at least I’d run thru them as DPS a few times.
And I totally understand what you mean about the different keybind setups. Just for grins, I was doing the Tol Barad dailies yesterday in Protection spec, and I kept hitting the incorrect keys at inopportune times. I realized after the first couple of fights that it was stupid of me to not at least have the same keybinds to abilities that were present for both specs (my Crusader strike is bound to 2, and Judgement bound to 5 for example), and once I’d corrected that on the Prot spec, it helped some. But still, there were times when I wanted a less used ability ("…where’s my freakin’ Cleanse!" I muttered at least once) and couldn’t find it.
