Eh. It’s not an RP server.
We don’t do RP servers anyway. Sometimes it’s hard enough to talk in just plain ol’ American English without having to worry about throwing thous and thees and whatnot into the mix.
I do play RP servers occasionally, and the thees and thines are the equivalent of someone in shakespeares day speaking in chaucerian english. The best way to role play is to speak only about things that your character would know about, nothing of the real world. Be polite, and be helpful if your character is the polite helpful sort, be arrogant and asshatish if you are that sort.
Besides, WoW RP servers tend to throw RP out the window in some of the tougher instances, RP just really means “better spelling, grammar, and manners for the most part” 90% of the time. But so far I’m finding Cairne okay as far as it goes I had a really good PUG for WC (all on my friends list now), and though I did have a group with the definition of a huntard last night he seems to be the exception (barrens chat not withstanding).
I think I’ve got the tabard design down. I’ll make it today (it’s based off a Jayjay’s design except I switched the red and the yellow, made the red a bit darker, and changed the color of the paw to add more contrast).
And good BFD run last night for those of us there, we didn’t get to finish (two more optional bosses left but it was late). But I think I may have screwed it up a bit (from what I understood I ran the run waaaaaay differently than the SFK run went). Overall I think it went good, even though I wish you guys would’ve told me in the middle of the run if I was doing things that differently. But you all seemed to understand what was going on fine so maybe that’s why I wasn’t informed until after.
Still looking for vaultmasters. I’m not looking for an accountant here, just two people to keep an eye on the money logs now and then and inform me/inquire when something seems fishy.
In more regards to the bank, I see a lot of people using the bank funds for repairs. I’d like to reiterate this is only to be used when you’re having trouble affording the repairs, not for everyday use, our limited funds just can’t handle that kind of strain right now.
Also, a mod I reccomend for everyone is Gatherer, especially if you have a miner or an herbalist because it marks nodes you (and other people in the guild when you’re on at the same time) gather. You could also dl gatherer DB (second blue box down, thanks Sedna) which after a quick import procedure in game can put all the nodes in the game on your map. This mod will also collect gathers of treasure chests for you skinner/leatherworkers and such that don’t have set “nodes” to gather.
If oyu throw around thees and thous in an RP environment you’re either considered a troll or an RP noob, either way you will be quickly mocked. oftentimes out of character unless you’re dealing with hardcore RPers in which case you’ll probably just be called a lackwitted goat felcher.
I’ll throw my hat in the ring for Vaultmaster.
I didn’t find the BFD run all that different from the SFK run. Our tactics weren’t the same, but I figured that was because we had another kind of group (warlock, rogue, hunter, priest, and warrior instead of paladin, mage, hunter, priest, and warrior). Maybe I didn’t notice because I was tanking, and tanking seems to be pretty much the same wherever you are.
I thought that once we had the signals worked out, everything went pretty well. If we’d gotten started a half-hour earlier we’d have finished the run, but it got very late very fast and I know I was drooping at the end.
If we’re going to keep doing instances regularly, one thing I think we could benefit from is practice and tutoring from more knowledgeable players. For me, particularly, this is my first time playing a warrior of any level, and I’m not always sure what I should be doing as a tank (uh, I get aggro, I hold aggro, and I pull aggro off the squishies, right?). Also, the only instance I’ve ever run is WC, so I don’t know the ins and outs of any dungeons other than that one, and I’m not wholly familiar with standard tactics like raid marking, crowd control, and so on. Maybe it would be helpful if a few of us got together now and then and practiced things like pulling and aggro management outside of a dungeon setting.
As to RP servers: the only difference I ever noticed between PvE servers and RP servers is that there was WAY more cybering and ERP on the latter. (Ew!)
I am also playing my first real warrior toon, but have a bit more experience perhaps in instance and raids. I’m not sure if it’s “normal”, but in my other guild’s runs we usually have the tank mark out the attacks, although sometimes that will get deferred to whoever has more experience in the instance OR someone who is just naturally bossy, er, a leader.
The trick of being a tank in groups is HOW to get and hold the aggro. What I’ve learned over time is that it’s not just up to the tank – mods like the Omen threat meter have let me play my mage a lot better in terms of not pulling aggro off of the tank. Just like it’s not just up to the healer to keep everybody alive, it’s a joint effort with others not to be grabbing threat and getting their buttocks whooped, selective smart use of self-heals by non-healing classes, etc.
We also didn’t get the quest item, The Fathom Core. I’m demoralized, having assumed correspondences with past games I’ve played with strong party emphasis. Maybe the solo class of hunter is best for me.
I don’t quite understand your point here. Why didn’t you get the Fathom Core? It didn’t drop? You didn’t get that far?
Sometimes you have to run an instance several times in order to get everyone the drop they want. It doesn’t always happen the first time through.
So why the heck IS the, what? Three week old realm? so damn full all the time? Did they promise anyone making a character on Cairne a free Arcanite Reaver or something?
We quit before we got that far. We had just dropped Kelris and would probably have gone for the Core and Baron Aquanis next, when time ran out and some of us had to go.
wonderlust, did you have a bad time? Is there anything we can do to make things better for you, next run?
I would like to run BFD again; I think we’ll do better this time, and we can knock out some of the quests we missed or didn’t complete (“Amongst the Ruins,” as mentioned already, plus if you grind on the naga Tide Priestesses for a bit you can pretty quickly pick up the Damp Note for “Allegiance to the Old Gods” which has you killing Lorgus Jett).
Okay. wonderlust, that happens sometimes. Nobody can guarantee they’re going to be able to finish an instance, especially if they have a family. I never count on getting everything I need in one run-through. Hell, that’s almost a RULE when you get into high-end instances and raids.
I got that quest from my last BFD run so I’m down with going any time.
Yeah, I’m sorry I couldn’t stick around to finish – as it was, I got a scolding when I got to bed anyway. I learned my lesson not to start instances as late as we got that one going.
But – tomorrow night and Thursday I’m home alone, so I’d like to get in a couple of runs while I have the chance. There are a couple of cloth drops in BFD I’d like to try to get.
Alright, I can be a vaultmaster. I hesitate to take a guild position, due to sporadic playtime, but it sounds like vaultmaster won’t require a fixed schedule.
I apologize. I realize that I must have sounded critical, which I didn’t intend. I was terribly disappointed in myself, not the group, for not instantly knowing everything about WOW in two weeks’ time, and not being as useful as I could have been. I’m still not even clear on the roles that other classes assume, and just keeping track of what’s happening around me is a challenge, especially as I’m supposed to play at a distance. I don’t recognize the sounds and symbols of spells cast and abilities activated in other players. Hunter is also new to me, and may seem easy to you folks, but I’m still getting used to the interface, commands, other’ class descriptions, etc. while tending/sending pet, switching back and forth between tracking humanoids and stealth, trying to set traps, trying to pull, and doing dps as well. Clearly, falling into water was a problem for me. :smack:
I made some big mistakes, forgetting to turn up the gamma so I could see better in a lit room - I was playing in a dark room where I was typing blind and made lots of mistakes because of that. Also, while I did have my pet on passive, I forgot to turn off growl, which may have confused things. The mechanics of pulling are clearly different from the other game I played, and I have a lot to learn there.
I love Verminary’s idea of experienced players tutoring new players. In my case that would be really useful. That kind of generous impulse to help is what makes this guild so amazing, and I hope I can do the same for others in some way.
I did return the damp note and got the quest, and I went back and got the rest of my crystals, too. It was fun clearing out the mobs so other players could get their crystals safely.
I’m busy tonight and probably tomorrow night too, but it’s fine with me if you guys go ahead without me. Thanks for the huge pool of experience being offered to me, and the good leadership which I can learn from.
Wonderlust, don’t worry about not knowing how to play yet. That’s what instancing with the guild is all about. Believe me, you will make noob mistakes even when you’re level 70. Every instance is different and every instance has roles shifting ever so slightly(sometimes shifting majorly, like having a mage tank!) That’s also what I find to be really fun about the game. Once you learn your class well and you learn to adjust to the changing circumstances in different situations, a good group can be magical.
The hunter class is often downplayed as an ez mode class, and it is easy to solo with them, but it’s difficult to play them well. A hunter can add a LOT to a group: Two offtanks, trapping up to three mobs at a time, kiting, best pulling class and I could go on and on. But along with that, there are lots of things that can go wrong like letting your pet run amok, feigning death at the wrong time instead of taking your blows(and consequently letting the healer die), losing control of your trapped mobs, etc.
But all that comes with time and experience playing your class. No one expects you to excel at your toon now, after a few instance runs. Give it some time and you’ll “become one” with your character. If you have any questions, let me know, I’ve got a 70 hunter that I love to play.
FYI my old main was a warrior, and I’ve tanked most instances out there. That’s not to say that I remember all the ins and outs, but if any o’ you warrs need any hints and tips for tanking, I’ll see what I can remember.
I have not tanked raids, because I’m not a raider. After Everquest, Mr. Athena has told me NO MORE RAIDING. Though I think he’s backing down on that a bit since it’s been several years.
ShibbOleth is very right about it not being only the tank’s responsibility to hold aggro, especially in the lower levels of the game where warriors don’t have all the talents/skills that end-game tanks have. It’s basically impossible for a tank to hold aggro if a dps class is doing all-out damage. The trick for DPS classes is to do as much damage as they can without drawing aggro, while the warrior uses his/her tricks to generate aggro.
One thing that helps a lot in group instances is to designate a target. I haven’t been on instances with you all, so maybe you’re doing that already (apologies if you are). Use the in-game markers to mark the target that everyone is supposed to be killing, and make sure people are on it. Do not target whatever the warrior has targeted; if it’s a warrior with any skill at all, he/she is changing targets all the time in order to generate aggro on all the mobs, not just the one that everyone’s trying to kill.
Actually, that’s another tip for the warriors - get used to changing targets to get aggro on all of them. If there’s 3 mobs on you and you’re only hitting one, the other two are gonna decide to eat your healer & dpsers.
If you’re an engineer warrior, bombs are very useful when it comes to holding aggro, especially in the lower levels.
Patch day! Not a lot of stuff for our levels. But log in a bit before you plan on playing to download the 262MB file.
I’m interested in BFD, I have a couple quests, but can work on getting others.
And I still have some alts that need the basics: RFC/WC. So I’ll be on.

I’m slowly learning which abilities generate the most threat, when to change stances, how to kite and how to pull as a tank, but this is the one thing it’s been really tough for me to do. Is there a technique or a macro or even an add-on that makes switching targets easier? So far I have been tabbing back and forth between targets when I try holding multiple mobs, but that can get confusing pretty fast and more than once I’ve lost one in the shuffle.
At what point is it worth it to think about a respec? I am doing a hybrid build now for solo PvE, but I wonder occasionally (especially if lots of instances are in my future) whether I ought to go for a more tank-oriented build.
wonderlust:
hug It’s easy to get down if you’re worried about performing well.
I just wanted to say: you’re not alone and don’t let it get you down.
The main thing I remember negatively about people I’ve grouped with is attitude. People getting lost (er…though this is usually me in the group…) or hitting air for half the fight or trying to sic a pet on a group member for half the fight or healing the mage for two minutes and wondering why the tank you’re trying to heal isn’t getting better (er…yes, I’ve done this too…) isn’t as big of a deal as a negative person who is going around blaming the group for everything or ninja-ing items.
Plus, this guild seems the helpful type, so making mistakes is a-okay and I think the way to learn in the first place. hug
