The Canadope Café, 2014 Edition: In 3-D!

Thanks, guys.

On our local news, they were interviewing an Imam who seemed to feel like it is the police’s/government’s responsibility to do something about radicalized Canadian citizens. I don’t know about that; I don’t much like the idea of the government/police getting all up in people’s religious business.

“Radicalized” is the politically correct term for “terrorist”. I’m for stopping terrorists, and if they happen to be of a religious bent, so be it.

Good summary, Rysto - and accurate. We were finally released from lockdown at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon and had to proceed directly south to Laurier St., where the police line/secure area ended. Had to run the gauntlet of frustrated reporters, who were reduced to sticking mics in peoples’ faces and asking “how do you feel? Can you tell me what happened?”. I didn’t make the 6:00 news as my response was to “fuck off”. DH is a chaplain at the Ottawa Civic and he didn’t get home until about 6 pm - absolutely wrung out emotionally. He’s retired military and the death of Cpl. Cirillo hit him hard.

I am back at work today but the atmosphere in the office is subdued. We had a front-row seat to yesterday’s events and many are feeling the impact today. One of our elders came in and did a smudge and healing circle, which helped immensely.

I would tend to say that all terrorists are radicalized, but not everyone who is radicallized is a terrorist.

Awe fuck. The news video of Corporal Cirillo’s doggies poking their noses under the fence looking for daddy just fucking kills me. Never mind that he has a 6 year old son.

Me too.

Just tweeted out - the procession is heading out along the Highway of Heroes now

I had the bad luck to be traveling the 401 as the same time as the procession yesterday–it passed me close enough to touch. The response was truly overwhelming–beginning at Belleville and CFB Trenton every single overpass was jammed with people. Every single overpass all the way into Toronto was full of people, fire trucks, every police officer who could be spared, and thousands of people lining the highway on both sides. It was really a thoroughly inspiring (and extremely emotional) sight. The videos people took don’t do it justice. The photos are better.

Jian Ghomeshi is leaving the CBC. In the past, I’ve gotten the impression that maybe not that many people on this board care all that much about the CBC or Ghomeshi (at least not as much as I do, at any rate,) but this news is huge.

Two points from the article:
*
In response, lawyers for Mr. Ghomeshi say he intends to sue the CBC for $50-million when courts open Monday morning.

In an e-mail, CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said “Information came to our attention recently, that in CBC’s judgement, precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian Ghomeshi.”*

Considering how much I liked the show, and how much I still have yet to learn about this whole situation… I just don’t know what to think at this moment.

I say good - I’ve posted before that I found that guy annoying (I think you might have flamed me for it, LOL)…

IMHO he’s one of those Canadian heavily-promoted teacher’s-pet know-it-alls who aren’t nearly as smart or cute as they think they are (I’d put people like Malcolm Gladwell, Naomi Klein, Andy Barrie and The Barenaked Ladies in that same bucket)

I think he was being a passive-aggressive dick to Billy Bob Thornton in that infamous interview from a few years back and deserved what Billy Bob gave him.

I knew you’d have something to say. :dubious:

I didn’t always like him, but the more I listened to him over the years, the more I liked him. I understand that he wasn’t for everyone. But he’s someone that I like very much, but I don’t know if that’ll change soon. Given that there is apparently more information about him that will come to light sooner or later, I don’t know how I’ll end up feeling.

Q was the only thing I liked listening to on the radio. If CBC thinks they can easily get rid of Ghomeshi, I hope they have something else coming their way. But no, he wasn’t a passive aggressive dick with Thornton. Billy Bob was the dick.

Yeah, those are my feelings.

Ghomeshi has now released a statement on Facebook explaining his side of the story. I imagine more information will be revealed in the coming days, but what information and by whom, I have no idea.

When Sook-Yin Lee did the porno (Shortbus – a damn good movie) they came close to sacking her, but ultimately didn’t due to support from CBC listeners and from the arts community.

I hope Ghomeshi gets enough support for CBC to reconsider, for I like his show. Also, being one who has on occasion been in the the BSDM scene myself, it really pisses me off that he is losing his job due to Mrs. Grundy.

Too bad he didn’t remember the rule passed down from father to son: “Son, don’t you ever stick your dick in crazy.”

Yuck, like we really need to hear this guy describing his bedroom activities.

Yes, it did seem that way at first impression. However, Billy Bob’s side of the story, described here, has the ring of truth to it IMHO.

I haven’t listened to him much: interviews with Robbie Kreiger, Alice Cooper, and Ray Davies come to mind, after all he was a musician. I liked what I heard, but didn’t find it remarkable, to be honest. Still, firing someone for what they do in their private life is not unprecedented. Random drug testing is an example of this.

I don’t have enough of a sample size of listening to Q to have an informed opinion.

I wish him well.

I just listened to the Billy Bob Thornton interview: what an asshole!

BB, that is.

Jian was great and the Q was one of CBC’s biggest draws.

Truthfully this is probably an ill thought, ham-fisted, cost cutting measure. The CBC has been gutting content/programming from it’s radio division for a while now (despite radio being far cheaper than TV, has a 3 times larger audience share, etc…)[

](The CBC Wants to Cancel Your Favourite Shows | HuffPost News)Sadly we can probably expect more “archive programming” and other types of free air-filler from the CBC instead of new, interesting, relevant, and compelling content. Our public broadcaster isn’t just poor (one can run an excellent public radio system on CBC’s current budget, easy) it’s sick. Sick and lost, and this won’t change until we get competent leaders (with stable vision) for Canada’s corporation.

In the meantime I want to plug my favourite independent Canadian podcast from a former CBC radio presenter Canadaland with Jessie Brown. He has a few shows on the CBC from an insider’s perspective. Like the show? Support Canadian entrepreneurship and become a patron. I’m sure every loonie counts.

Pardon my ignorance, but is tomorrow municipal election day in Ontario only, or country-wide?
