Billy Bob’s side of the story might have a ring of truth to it if Jian had ever asked a question about movies. He did not. He mentioned Thornton’s acting career in the intro, and then asked about music.
And he doesn’t have a choice about talking about his bedroom activities if he wants to contest his firing over his bedroom activities. I’m sure he doesn’t want to talk about it any more than you want to hear it.
I keep thinking Peter Gzowski would have never been in this situation.
But then, Peter G. apparently was no saint, either.
Keeping my mind open as much as I can. What someone does in their bedroom with another consenting adult or four is none of my business.
I will miss Jian. I don’t listen to Q as much as I used to, but I have always enjoyed the show… agree or disagree his vast musical knowledge brought something to the show that not any interviewer can bring. I think CBC is doing him wrong, an ex with an axe to grind is a bad way to go down. Did CBC make him sign a “morals clause?” If they did not, and he has not committed a crime then I think Ghomeshi may have a case.
I don’t watch/listen to CBC, so I’ve never heard of Jian Ghomeshi.
However, the fact that he is allegedly suing CBC for $50M in an unlawful dismissal action has piqued my interest. I note that, among other things, he is claiming “punitive damages.” That is a very high bar to achieve in Canada.
I will be watching this legal matter with interest.
It seems that Jesse Brown is involved in the story as a freelance reporter. It’s important to note that as a former member of CBC radio Jessie Brown would have background knowledge/gossip about Ghomeshi and his love life. And in his latest show he drops hints (02:31) about a major story he’s working on that’s “worst than embarrassing for certain parties”
While the Star publishes the allegations: [

All I can say for now about Jian - Canadaland show
I came here to post the Star article, but I see orcenio has done so already. It’s worth a read if you’re following the story. And thanks for the Canadaland link, orcenio.
That was my thought as well, Spoons: $50 million strikes me as improbably high for a wrongful dismissal suit, and since the CBC in their statement were wonderfully vague about their reasons, I’m having trouble seeing a defamation claim.
Will watch with interest to see how it unfolds.
I have trouble believing the CBC would open the, selves up unless they were pretty sure they had their ducks in a row. Even with the brilliant Peter Mansbridge coverage last week, there has been ongoing dicussions about whether or not to do away with them entirely, so one would hope they realize if they badly mishandled this, it could sink them entirely.
Jian, on the other hand, has nothing to lose by taking this on. I am tempted to reach out to friends in the media to see what their take is, but I hate it when they do that to me so I’ll fight the urge.
Very, very tired today. This weekend was one of those where you wish your work Blackberry would break (with Blackberry it’s always a possibility :)).
Is Ghomeshi replacing Ford?
Thread in Cafe Society about Ghomeshi.
I find this position - and it’s one seemingly held my many, many people - absolutely baffling.
If you for one instant think CBC fired Jian Ghomeshi because he likes BDSM, you have to be insane. They fired him because there is a litany of accusations of assault and sexual harassment piling up against him.
Of course *Jian Ghomeshi *wants you to think that’s why he was fired, and his press release was crafted that way, though even then he has to allude to the real stated justification for his dismissal: “…as a result of a campaign of false allegations pursued by a jilted ex girlfriend and a freelance writer.” In other words, “yes, I’m being fired because of accusations of sexual assault. But trust me, the bitch is crazy.” No mention of the other three accusers, one of whom claimed he harassed her at CBC, which is grounds for immediate termination in any decent company.
We don’t know all the details for sure, of course; Ghomeshi has his story his ardent fans seem to be lapping up, the Toronto Star has a much seedier story, and CBC can’t say anything. Of course, you also have a fourth side, which is his reputation amongst people who know him, which is incidentally incredibly terrible and totally consistent with the Star’s story but is, again, anecdotal.
What is for sure is that I do not for one instant believe that CBC fired him solely because he likes rough sex. That is, frankly, an absolutely preposterous idea. They fired his ass because they don’t want to be embarrassed and/or liable when some really serious shit comes out, and it’s already coming out. The workplace sexual harassment claim alone is more than enough to get rid of him, provided they followed all their contractual obligations.
Based on what is now coming out, I think you very well may be right.
The polls are almost closed… soon we will know. Ford more years, or…?
Didn’t Rob Ford still win his seat in whatever it was he was running for?
He did, councillor in Ward 2.
Doug, who would probably still have a job had he run for council, is now out of one.
As amazing as it might be to imagine, Doug Ford would have been far, far worse than Rob.
(Home-made) sign spotted in my neighbourhood: “Vote for John Tory - we need a boring city government!”
Interesting article in the Washington Post: Ghomeshi is not getting support from the “kink” community:
Note that John Tory was Secretary to Bill Davis, whose most noted quote was: “Bland works.”
I have hopes for John Tory. Even if he never appears on Jimmy Kimmell, that’s a good thing!
