I too have been lucky enough to meet Phil. He is a genuine person and wears his heart on his sleeve. He was also a true cold warrior, he probably felt a little bit of pride when you mentioned '72. I was also lucky enough to meet his brother Tony, who is also a great, kind person. You know, Marty Turco is very similar to the Esposito brothers. I guess there is something to being from an Italian family in the Soo.

Went to the the Rainbow Blues bar in Ottawa about a year and half ago to see Jack De Kaiser play. Apparently Loreena Harper is a big fan (she hired him to give their son Ben lessons in Blues guitar) and both Loreena & Stephen (and about 6 LARGE security personnel) were there watching the show. Very weird. They left after the first set.

Also in a pub in Ottawa … the Manx on Elgin. Went in one night for a quick bite. As the evening wore on a large crowd arrived. A nice couple asked if they could share our table as all the others were full and we had a large table with only two people . Turns out they were Chris Hatfield’s aunt & uncle and the group that had arrived was Chris and his family celebrating the issuing of his coin by the mint. Shared a few beers and had a lovely conversation with his aunt & uncle and they introduced us to Chris. A true gentleman!
The old Shawinigan Handshake! A good friend of mine had this pic taken of him an the ex PM back in 2010, not too many of these around I bet…
Not sure if you can see the pic, I keep getting an error.
Ok sorry, not sure what was going on with photobucket but it won’t let me share the url for the pic. Here is the link for my library, there is only seven pics there so it should stand out.
The first one loaded fine. Quite lawl worthy.
I made what I thought would be the first comment on an on line CTV story regarding Canadian hockey players speaking out on the Anti gay law in Russia.
Never commented on a news story before.
CTV “invited” me “to make the first comment”
So I did
Two days later and the invitation is still out to everyone and yet no comments published
Too bad. I thought I was being very clever.
The comments are appearing at home. I wonder what kind of weird firewall at work lets me read news stories, but not the comments. And this is recent as of this week.
Weird.
The comment balloon under each story reads “0.”
John Turner worked in the same building as me in my old job, so I’d sometimes see him in the elevator. He’s not a young man.
I saw Don Cherry and Ron MacLean at the airport once.
Wow. I just remembered last summer at Costco in Ottawa (Kanata) Lloyd Robertson had a book signing engagement.
I was standing in the foyer of the store, waiting to receive a gift of lamb from my Muslim car-pool buddy (tradition dictates they share food at Ramadan) and Lloyd walked past with his handler, agent?
I said “Hello Mr. Robertson” and he smiled his famous smile and said hello back.
Here’s the kicker: the guy’s only about 5’6"; he’s tiny! Well I’m only 5’8" but you know what I mean.
Now I know he’s a zillion years old and we all shrink with age, but he was seriously about 5’6" and probably weighed 130 pounds soaking wet.
I remember him hosting a jazz festival I attended when I lived in Ontario. This would have been about the year 2000 or so. He looked old then.
He’s scheduled to be here soon, to address a local seniors’ group. I don’t plan to go (I’m not a senior), but it would be interesting to see how different he looks from when I saw him at the jazz fest.
Mmmmmmm - midnight pyrogy bar at a double Ukrainian wedding (both bride and groom), on Saturday!
Instead of the usual cold cuts on a bun as a midnight snack, out came the pyrogy, with sour cream, onions and bacon bits.
Mommy’s.
ETA - missed edit window. That “Mommy” was supposed to be a closing “mmmmm”.
Sure Spoons. ![]()
Psst … check the username again.
Hahahahahah…
Apologies to both.
Beer? What beer?
Sorry guys.
ETA: Did I make a Spoonerism?
:smack: I shoulda known better.
Apologies to all for setting him up like that.
Can any Dopers who have spent time in the north comment on the story about the guy who drank a human toe in a Dawson City bar?
The guy was fined $500, and he did pay. So although what he did was toe-tally revolting, at least he was a kind sole who was able to foot the bill.
Oh and also, there’s a video, according to this article.
