The CanaDoper Café, 2013 edition.

The guy was fined for drinking it, the bar wasn’t fined for serving it. I saw something that it is a bit of a tradition, but how did toes in booze start, and why does it continue?

Did the mullet-head offer an indignity to the toe?

As to why, it sells drinks and adds local flavour. Pretty much the same reasoning behind swapping spit with the cod in St.John’s. as the old joke goes, if the 6th shot doesn’t get the taste out, one more won’t either…

So the lesson is…Wait for it.

So, Calgary’s mayor says for disgruntled Quebecers, who don’t like the new religious intolerance laws, to move to Calgary, where they’ll be accepted.

I’m getting really fed up with most things about the current Quebec government myself. If I had a lot of money, and I didn’t have so many ties here, and Calgary didn’t have such a low vacancy rate…

Lol. Grandstanding from a city mayor. The political equivalent of a used car salesman. Good on him for scoring easy points, though.

Hey, I think he’s a cool guy. Better than the mayors around my area, who keep getting arrested or running over cats or stuff like that.

I’m moving to Ottawa next year, there’s a lot of reasons as to why but health care was the issue that was the final nail in the coffin for me. I had the chance last year to experience the health care system in Ottawa last year, and I was amazed at the difference. I wasn’t treated like a pain in the ass and they were thorough.

I’d prefer Calgary as well, Ottawa will have to do for now.

May I ask where you’re moving from?

Ottawa is a fabulous city, and I don’t just say that because I live here. I’m in the rural west end of the city, and when I bought this house we were not part of Ottawa; we were amalgamated about 10 years ago. I rarely go into the city proper.

Ottawa is interesting. We have a world-class children’s hospital and heart institute (not the the same facility!). There are many decent museums and galleries.

Summers are hot; winters are cold. Lately it seems we only have three seasons and go from winter to summer in a week or two.

Major concert acts come here; lately Paul McCartney even. And of course there’s the Senators and CFL will be back next year.

The city is safe, clean, and the downtown core is vibrant due to the market area and the proximity to Quebec.

There are something like 150 golf courses within an hour’s drive, plenty of local skiing and only a couple of hours from the eastern townships and fabulous skiing.

Too bad I’m moving up the valley shortly!

Leaffan, in spite of what it says about your location in your profile, I thought you lived in Toronto (probably because of your username.) Stupid me :smack:

Well, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt since I only decided to pay for a membership last week, therefore my location would be hidden. I used to be a member back in the old days when we didn’t have a choice, but since it went free I’ve been a freeloader.

My wife would never have believed me that I was paying to communicate with strangers on a message board, with no ulterior motives. Thankfully, and yes I do indeed mean thankfully, this is no longer an issue as of last April.

I have no problems paying up now.

Oh, and regarding the Leafs thing, I grew up in southern Ontario and can’t switch allegiances. I also believe I picked a really shitty username when I came here in 2005. I’ve thought about changing it, and even did a poll survey on the topic. The majority of respondents said “Na. Leave it as is,” so I did.

Not far from Ottawa at all. Gatineau to be exact. I’ve always used the medical system here because I’m suppose to but the last time around I couldn’t bear the thought of being stuck in a crowded waiting room with the pain I was in for 18+hours and for the first time got my ass in a cab and went to the General in Ottawa, amazing differences from A-Z. So because of the proximity I do spend a lot of time in Ottawa when not ill.

Gee, I guess I didn’t need to tell you all about our fair city then.

How did you get hospital service in Ottawa as a Quebec resident? How does that work?

Reciprocity. One of the conditions of the health care that we all have in Canada is that a province must accept the health cards of all the other provinces. For example, Leaffan, if you needed to visit the ER when you were on vacation in Alberta, the Alberta hospital would accept your OHIP card.

Ibanez is doing the same thing really; he’s just not vacationing in another province.

Makes sense for vacationers of course. I never realized close-boarder folks could do the same. I suppose there are no checks and balances to prevent it though.

We’re Number One! We’re Number One!

(We also saw it on Maclean’s Book of Lists on TV, but I couldn’t find a link for that.)

I think (though I’m not sure) that people from out-of-province can be charged for services, then they are re-imbursed for the costs from their provincial government when they return home.

We’re number two! We’re number two!

That’s very Canadian of you.

The definitely sent Quebec the bill for me showing up there, I asked the nurse about that because I felt like such a weasel. I was a trooper prior to that and always went to my shitty joke of a hospital, rated worst in Quebec but couldn’t do it this time.

They ran blood tests, gave me pain medication, x rayed my chest, ran a scan on my abdomen and didn’t have to pay for any of that. I’m sure if I had to stay in a room over night or something similar and unless my insurance didn’t cover it I can see having to pay then get reimbursed in a year or so by Quebec as soon as they get their next transfer payment from Ottawa. /s

I have a few gatineau friends that have described to me the same experience as you. The hospitals there are apparently quite dicey. So much so, that I hear stories about friends going to emerg at the MONTFORT (bad side of town, lot of violent vagrants, mostly French staff), and telling me how great it was, to my disbelief.
