Last maple syrup heist suspect arrested: article.

Canadians do, Canadian companies don’t?

It’s not so much the company; it’s the parts of the world that the company engages in business. Payola is the norm in these parts of the world. I’m not defending SNC-Lavalin, but merely pointing out the rules of the playing field in which they must operate.

I liked it.

Sad news! I spent alot of time there back in University.
My roomates all had jobs at the old Elgin Theatre (also gone :() and we spent many an afternoon/evening there.

I’ve done 4 shows in Ottawa, and visited I don’t know how many times. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere more than 10 blocks away from the Mayflower, and I know I’ve never passed through without meeting someone there at least once. I’ll be sorry to see it go…

An Ottawa bus crashed into a train in Ottawa this morning, leaving 6 people dead (including the driver). Absolutely horrific.

A friend of mine was on that train - she’s fine, but it has been a day she would like to be able to forget.

I heard horrific stories about the bus passengers. I imagine even some of the non-injured bus passengers are emotionally scarred after seeing other people terribly injured (I’ll spare the details here.)

And the driver who died - apparently it was his birthday yesterday. So sad.

One of my school friends got an email this morning from a prof that her morning class was canceled. But for that, she says she would have been on the bus. Whole lotta freaking out going on my Facebook wall.

I thought of you Antonio. Don’t you live in BBQ-haven?

I most certainly do not live in Barfhaven! Don’t make me file a slander suit against you! :stuck_out_tongue:

A neighbourhood pub, full of memories, closing, is never a cause for celebration. Ask me sometime about how Scarborough’s “Flying Scot” closed, and the wake that was held subsequently*. But strong friendships endure, and I’m pleased to say that I am still friends with people whom I met at the “Scot,” even though it closed fifteen years ago.

In short, a pub is the people, not the physical structure.

  • Even better, ask me sometime about the story of “Shithouse Harry.” Or the time we planned to steal the Queen from another Toronto pub. Or the time the band that was booked failed to show up, and we were starved for something to do. When Big Jim got married, when Gloria revealed that she couldn’t read, and when Roger dropped dead.

So many memories, so many stories. Gosh, I miss the times we had at the “Scot.”

I thought it was pronounced Farhaven?

My oldest son had a baseball game out there at 6:00, I left my house in at 4:40 and arrived at 6:15!? Luckily, they were still warming up because others were late as well.

Ever notice when you’re driving in surburbia, you turn left then drive 3/4s of the way around in a circle, then turn left and drive 3/4s of the way around in a circle, then turn left… repeating until you finally get to where you’re going?

Anyway, very sad day in Ottawa, flags are at half-mast, people are shocked and grieving right now. No clue as to what happened yet. Apparently the bus does have a black box so hopefully there will be some retrievable data to piece it together.

Is anyone else following the inquest into Jeffrey Baldwin’s death? It breaks my heart but reading what happened is nothing compared to what that poor little boy endured.

To be honest, I’d never heard a word about this until now. I just Googled him.

I’m sorry–I should have included a warning that the story is extremely disturbing and graphic.

I read the initial news reports but as a parent (and human being) I found it too disturbing that someone could do that to a child.

So apparently Coke had a Canadian campaign where they’d print one random English word and one random French word on their bottlecaps. Didn’t go so well when the French words for “late” and “shower” came up, though…

Oh, I see we already have a thread about it.

In other news, I got an ad for the proposed Charter of Quebec Values in the mail today. I threw it in the garbage. I actually somewhat regret not saving it to wipe my ass with, though.
