Cage match!!!
Well, I read Ignatieff’s book so you don’t have to.
It’s… well, baffling, in a lot of ways. He contradicts himself a lot, sometimes, I think, inadvertently. I’ll have to stew on this for awhile.

O Canada!
Land of our forefathers,
Your head is crowned with glori’us blossoms.
For your arm knows how to wield the sword,
It carries too the cross.
Your story is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
And your valour, steeped in faith,
Will protect our homes and our freedoms,
O Canada, we stand on Guard, for thee!

I’ve written a few anthems of the religious variety, so I figured I’d take a crack tooling around with the syllables in Ministre’s. It leaves something to be desired, but oh well! Version 2.01.
My very British organ teacher never ceased to tell me that the beginning “O Canada” was obviously written by a French Canadian, because no self respecting English composer would put the “da” on a downbeat, lol.
The tune also sounds as if it were grifted from Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte,” but I’m sure I mentioned that before. ![]()
Keep us posted as to when you’ll have a recital of original and other works. I recall, from previous posts, you mentioning your musical experience. True, I’m only occasionally in eastern Canada, but if it coincides with my schedule … why not try to get there?
That was a good read Rick. Thanks for that.

Heh, that was an excellent read. Summed up very nicely my impressions of Ignatieff - though I admit, I’m unlikely to ever read his book.
I think my money would be on the serial killer …
A very well written piece, thanks for that.
Interesting.
Apparently, Parizeau of all people came out swinging against the Quebec gov’t’s modest proposal:
The guy infamous for blaming “ethnics and the money vote” now says the current Quebec Charter “goes too far”, is “frightening” immigrants, and allows federalists to pose as the “real defender” of minorities.
“Layton, before he died and was sainted, was justifiably regarded as an opportunistic, manipulative weasel.” Hah! Nice turn of phrase!
“And yet it wasn’t a calling to Michael Ignatieff. He entered politics at the age of 59, much older than almost any other politician; by way of comparison, Jack Layton was first elected to office at 32, Stephen Harper at 34.” Let’s not forget that PM Stephen Harper was active in politics as a teenager, and Layton was the Prime Minister of the Quebec Youth Parliament. Your point is very valid, that politics was a calling to both of these men, and very much not Ignatieff.
Good review; it doesn’t sound like there were very many surprises in the book (except maybe that Ignatieff is likeable in any way - he seems like a real cold fish).
Could someone explain this to me?
I don’t understand where that fits in with the idea of not allowing people to wear obvious religious symbols in government jobs.
In the original proposal institutions could voluntarily opt out for (I believe) an initial three year period, until presumably, they found a way to replace all the Muslims, Jews, and Sikhs.
That was my understanding at least.
It’s not a permanent opt-out scenario, just a temporary one. It sounds like they’ve changed their stance on that now.
Rick, that was an excellent review. Thanks for posting it!
Cat, think of it as a mini-notwithstanding clause. Just like the provinces can opt out of certain clauses of the Canadian Charter, the original proposal was that municipalities and hospitals could opt out of the Quebec Charter of Values. Then it turned out that lots of municipalities and hospitals said they would use it, so the Quebec gov’t says it won’t include the opt-out.
So everyone wants to opt out of it because they find it so odious, so the government takes that to mean, “Well, don’t give them the opt-out option, then!” That’s some good governmentin’.

Gods, I hope that ends well. That’s the last thing we need - well armed wackos who think the law doesn’t apply to them roaming the back country…
