The CanaDoper Café, 2013 edition.

Fargin’ bastage.

Reading Week, or you just snapped and are getting out, antonio107?

I was dropping off my dry-cleaning this morning, and ran into Jim Hopson, CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The dry cleaning guy was grilling him about the rumours that Geroy will be Green and White. Hopson was quite open about it, mentioned that Brendan Taman, the Riders GM, had recruited Geroy to the CFL when he was at Winnipeg, and that Geroy liked the Saskatchewan fans.

I recounted the conversation to Mrs Piper when I got back in the car, and she said, “That’s pretty free talking from a CEO.”

Got to the office, and sure enough, Geroy is now a Rider!

Riders traded Justin Harper and a 3rd round draft pick, which seems pretty decent. Buono needed more room in the salary cap to accommodate the big raise they gave Lulay, and given Geroy’s poor season (first time in 10 years he didn’t crack 1000 yards), he was looking at a salary cut. From the press release the Lions issued, seems a fairly amicable parting of the ways.

Tail end of his career, of course, but I think he’ll still have something in the tank if his hamstring has cleared up.

All this cold weather might slow the inexonerable march of the Emerald Ash Borer. They can survive to -30. I am hoping that we get to include windchill and freeze those bastards. It’s too late for my property, what with over a dozen dead ash along my property line. Luckily they are on city property and all marked with a big red X, only one on my side of the fence that I will have to pay for (or possibly DIY … it’s not that big and it’s far from the house)

First CanaDoper post … any traditions here? Figures it’s the weather that brings out another lurker.

It is amazing what the human body can adapt to. I did a short stint in Inuvik a few years ago and it was -35 no windchill. We were bundled in goretex to the hilt and the local teenagers were wearing leather jackets and running shoes, outside, for hours. Even when I was a teen in Wpg I had to bundle up more than that in those temps…

Don’t forget to pack your speedo…

Oh, and… missed the edit window.
@Leaffan and Lord Seldon: I did preface my post on this that it would never happen. You are right in that the mfrs would never eat the cost, and that the technology could concievably be circumvented. Any system that tries to prevent human dishonesty is bound to have limitations and extraordinary genius applied to beat it; Malcolm Gladwell references it in The Tipping Point.
What I attempted to point out is that it IS possible, and if the will was there, could be done. I still disagree that it would be cost prohibitive, though. Driver’s licences are already moving to smart cards, and cars are systematically more computerized. It will only be a matter of time before your registration and insurance are on there with your licence info. It seems to me that makes it only a natural direction to take. The other way it could go is via biometrics, or hell, why even bother? Google already has a car licenced to drive itself on US roads…

You have to treat all the CanaDopers at Timmy
Worth a try

I flew in today from the Maritimes. We went from –23c in the morning to 22c when we landed. A week and a half of fun in the sun. Hopefully the cold snap will be over by the time we get home.

I have a friend who spent a year in Cambridge Bay, she now wanders without a jacket in Calgary and Saskatoon (wherever she is at a given time).

Hi, old lurker! hope this winter kills some damned pine beetles, too.

I think our Canadoper tradition is to give you a good facewash when you start posting. Hows about it?

A bunch of guys I work with did the Advanced Arctic Ops on Res Bay. They nearly melted when they landed in -20 in Trenton.

I felt similar coming home from Arviat. -60 is just SO much COLDER than -20.

If I recall correctly, it’s both. The newbie buys us Tim’s, and we thank them with a facewash.

That seems fair.

So, the bitumen bubble is costing Alberta and Canada billions of dollars, apparently. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Well, I could definitely see fit to treating everyone who showed up to a CanaDopefest in Ottawa to a Double Double & a box of TImbits! But no raincheques … you have to show up in person!

As far as the facewash, I will pass on that … bad memories of gradeschool.

Seriously, anyone interested in a Winterlude CanadopeFest in Ottawa?
We could talk about how much radio in this city sucks now and how much better it was back in the day. [/endref to other thread] Get off of my lawn … er snowbank!

Long term, get the pipeline built. Oil prices will rise again. Short term, I think you guys need a sales tax.

I’d be there!

Ottawa’s New CFL Team Searches for a Name

The five on the short list are:

[ul]the Red Blacks[/ul]

[ul]the Nationals[/ul]

[ul]the Raftsmen[/ul]

[ul]the Voyageurs[/ul]

[ul]the Rush[/ul]

Personally, I’d do for the Raftsmen or the Voyageurs.

It’s a shitty short list as far as I’m concerned. There will not be any other considerations; one of these five will be the chosen name.

Red Blacks?
Rush?

Oy.
