Calgary? It will pop back in a year or two, better than ever.
+40 in Yellowknife today. I guess that’s part of the problem that drowned Ft.McM and Calgary.
And Tsuu Tina and Morley as well. Siksika has just been better at getting media coverage so far. The response has been amazing, but I hope people don’t forget about the other two.
Office is still closed tomorrow, and might be on Wednesday too. I think things are starting to get a bit critical for some business processes now, tbh. I’m trying to work from my BB and it’s not working so well! ![]()
Some Calgary Flood humour. Make sure you scroll down to see the whole picture. ![]()
Well, it’s funny for sure, however it does show the double standard to which men are held in our society. If that would have read “Need cute nurse” or something there’d be hell to pay.
Just sayin’.
Good for you, Cat, for helping out!
It could have also been a play on the viral picture of the High River fireman that I linked to in this thread. ![]()
Thanks, Spoons - Jim and I donated to Red Cross, and I donated a pail and some cleaning supplies and some time, but when we compare that with your whole basement (or whole house) being underwater, it is such a tiny, tiny little bit that we can do.
My sister (who went to clean with me yesterday) said that she had heard someone talking about how well-behaved Calgarians are being, and how it isn’t just anarchy around here, and that surprised me - why on earth would we be behaving any differently? Isn’t this just what every community would do?
Get yer Calgary Stampede t-shirts - Hell or High Water! Proceeds going to flood relief!
Well, no, not every community has that same neighbourly spirit. Take New Orleans after Katrina as but one example. I’m sure there were acts of kindness that we didn’t necessarily hear about, but the widespread looting was a fact.
Whereas I’ve heard of all sorts of good deeds being done in Calgary. There was a photo of a water vac van that drove from Saskatoon, and the owners were cleaning out people’s basements for free as a goodwill gesture.
Those look great! I may have to order one.
Prince Albert, actually, unless CBC has it wrong or there’s more than one. Neither of which is impossible.
So, Gorsnak, how’s the water level in Saskatoon?
Come to think of it, do we have any Edmonton Dopers? I read yesterday that they’re getting some serious flooding, too!
High, but not stupidly high. The dock down behind the Mendel is underwater, as are some walkways around River Landing. White Swan Drive and Spadina are both covered in a couple spots. There’s no visible drop in the water where it goes over the weir. But no buildings in town are flooded, and they don’t expect to have to increase the outflow at the Gardiner Dam, so the water isn’t going to get any higher (and even if it did, it has a long way to go before anything is threatened).
That said, there are a few scattered residences, farms, golf courses, etc along the river between the dam and the confluence with the North Saskatchewan that are flooded out.
I humbly beg your pardon - here’s the article from CBC Saskatoon. I was misled by the line that said they drove from Saskatoon to Calgary; I suppose they must have been working there? A few paragraphs down, the family is referred to as being from Prince Albert.
I’m glad to hear things are not too bad in Saskatoon - my folks used to live in River Heights, and I remember Spadina getting flooded out a couple of times.
You know what? I kinda like Calgary’s mayor. Can we have someone like that in Montreal please? Thanks.
Hey! I called dibs on him for Toronto weeks ago!
Bummer for me.
Well, we do have an interim mayor for Montreal now. I hope he turns out to be all right.
Could Calgary share him with Edmonton?
I found this nice video of the Calgary mayor sharing some stories about the Alberta floods. Good to hear that so many are helping each other.
I hope you people affected by the floods are staying safe.
