Have fun! Kingston in the summer is a great spot; minimal rain, compared to the spring and fall, and lots of sun! And generally well-stocked with pubs (not that soldiers are interested in such things )
I can’t remember the name of it, but there was one scuzzy pub on the main street when I was there which had been Sir John A.'s committee rooms, on the second floor. The ground floor had been a pub in Sir John’s day, and still was!
I agree. Kingston in the summer is beautiful. Our family spent a few summer weekends there when I was a child. I don’t recall any bad weather in July or August.
When I got to be older, I got to experience the pubs. Fantastic, and well-worth the time spent getting off the highway between Montreal and Toronto for lunch.
Alberta Flood update - it looks like the Alberta government is making changes to allowing people to build in flood plains. Story here.
I think I support this plan - you get help to re-locate, you get help to put flood prevention plans in place, but you don’t get government assistance over and over for the same problem.
Although I wasn’t around at the time, I heard enough stories from my parents about Hurricane Hazel hitting Toronto in 1954. The storm, and an overflowing river, washed away a street–houses and people. It was in a flood plain.
Toronto’s policy then was a little stricter than Alberta’s policy is now. It simply did not allow the rebuilding of residences on the flood plain, and turned the area into a park. Indeed, as a result of that storm, Toronto does not allow residential development on any flood plain in the city. This means that today, Toronto has many beautiful parks in the river valleys–but no houses anywhere near them.
I don’t know if it’s feasible to move High River to higher ground (could “High Ground” be a new name for the town?) but if it is, I’d support a ban on rebuilding on the flood plain. Toronto recently had a larger dump of rain than it got during Hurricane Hazel, but nobody’s house washed away, and there were no deaths of people trapped in their house as it was washed away. It seems to me that if High River follows a similar “no rebuilding on the flood plain” policy, then it should expect little to no damage the next time the Highwood River floods.
You know, I’ve loved “To Prince Edward Island” ever since I saw it but now, having looked at other works of his I’d have to say “Seven Crows” and “Skater” have muscled their way in as well.
Just made it into Montréal. You guys sure know how to lay out the welcome mat! Nothing beats driving through Montréal during rush hour traffic unless it is doing so during that apocalypse of a rain storm.
Damn straight! You guys really know how to pit on a show for visitors, but you really need to learn to drive. There is a nice medium between 80km/h and 140 km/h that you should strive for (although in the downpour I was glad to stick behind the slowsters).
Cyros, your time really sucks. Today is the first day of construction workers’ holidays in Quebec, so over 100,000 workers and their families start their vacations today. It’s one of the worst days of the year to be on the road, and even in nice weather, it can be quite an ordeal.
