The Canadoper Café 2024 is now open!

He should promise to get fresh water to all the First Nations!

Canadians would seriously rally to that cause, I believe.

Oh. Wait. Mr Trudeau failed to deliver on the promise that got him into power. Over nine years!

While clearly demonstrating that the nation possessed the wealth to give households 2k a month through Covid. But just couldn’t find a way/the funds for that water thing.
I loath PP, will not vote Conservative.
But I definitely won’t vote for Trudeau again.

I completely get your point about water and first nations; with some political will this should be reasonable doable over, say, five years.

Notwithstanding that, because I believe that PP will win, I will vote for Justin in the hope that PP will only win a minority.

At this point a vote for the NDP may be just as good. They’re almost effectively tied with the Liberals, and I have a suspicion things will actually get worse for the Libs.

The NDP certainly deserves the vote more, and I say that as a guy who thinks Jagmeet Singh is a dreadful politician.

I might change my mind if, in fact, Trudeau is replaced as Liberal leader.

Good point. In fact, a few elections ago I voted Green, during May’s first tenure as leader.

New Brunswick transfer of power occurs on Saturday, November 2.

BC is still up in the air, pending recounts.

Saskatchewan final day of voting is Monday, October 28.

At this point I think a Conservative majority in the next federal election is pretty much a foregone conclusion, and that the longer term prospects of removing PP from office promptly would be improved by Trudeau remaining as Liberal leader to fight the next election, so that his successor doesn’t have that electoral defeat hanging on them.

I recently applied for CPP. I’m old enough. Checking on my application through the Canadian Government website, it says, “Your application is being processed. Please wait 10 - 15 business days for a determination.” Or something like that. Thing is, I applied 25 business days ago. What gives?

Also, I recently got something about the Old Age Supplement. Never thought of myself as old age, but okay. If they’re willing to give me money, sure why not?

Problem is, that I’ve got the CPP and OAS notices so close together. Coincidence, or does one have to do with the other?

Question: Is CPP separate from the OAS? Am I qualified for both? If so, do I have to apply for the OAS seperately?

I hate to sound like an old fart, but I guess I am an old fart. Why can’t I just go to the local Service Canada outlet, fill out a few forms, and get a message in the mail in a couple of weeks? Why all this confusing online stuff?

CPP is strictly a pension plan - if you paid, you get money out. Old Age Security is a benefit for citizens and permanent residents. It’s based on years you have lived in Canada after 18. You need to apply for both.

In addition, there is Guaranteed Income Supplement, which is for low income seniors only.

And the Bluenosers are joining the rush to the polls:

Premier ignores the fixed date election law he passed three years ago.

I’m not sure I grasp this.

  1. What would cause Poilevre to be removed from office?
  2. Why would the guy who led the Liberal Party to what will likely be a horrifying defeat be better positioned to do such a thing than a fresh leader?

These laws aren’t worth the paper they’re written on./

Not speaking for @Gorsnak, but I assume they meant a 1 term PM.
I agree that a seat warmer would stem the tide better than JT in what will almost definitely be a Conservative majority, then get the next leader setup for 2029. I’d put my money on Mark Carney.

Losing the following election, same way as usual. If JT steps aside now, Libs select their best leadership candidate, get creamed anyways. Losing the election harms that leader’s future polical capital. If Trudeau takes the big L and the Libs pick a new leader in the aftermath, the new leader doesn’t have that on their record.

The website tells you how long it should take, your experience is how long it actually takes winding its way through Federal bureaucracy. I had a similar situation with something I applied for where they said it would be done by a specific date followed by a notification that the new less-specific date was sometime in the next couple of months.

That happens very rarely at the federal level. Mackenzie and Bennett are the only two PMs who only won one election. Usually takes six to eight years to reach the « throw the bums out » point.

ETA: and Clark.

Don’t forget those who never won an election: Kim Campbell and John Turner. Going back, we have John Abbott, John Thompson, Charles Tupper, Arthur Meighen; are there others? I bow to your expertise.

You just missed Sir Mackenzie Bowell, who came in-between Thompson and Tupper.

Bruce Hutchinson called the five year period between Macdonald’s death and Laurier’s election « The Long Obsequies ».

I always felt like Kim Campbell was thrown to the wolves - Mulroney was hugely unpopular by then, and someone must have told him the Conservatives were going to lose the '93 election.

Same thing here - while I wish that Pierre Poilievre would never get near the PMO, it’s not looking like any Liberal leader is going to be able to hold him off. Barring a miracle, I don’t see the NDP or the Greens making much headway, either. Better if Justin Trudeau runs again, takes his lumps, and gets replaced as leader after the defeat. That way, someone else can rebuild the party.

I say this while throwing up in my mouth over the idea of Poilievre as Prime Minister. He’s a chihuahua pretending to be a pit bull, and that’s about the nicest thing I can say about him!

Can anyone sue over this? If they do, might they win?
