The "counting one's blessings" MMP

I know that reference!

My sister lives in Nevada. A couple of days ago, while riding home with a friend, they were almost killed by a semi truck going the wrong way on the interstate. By the grace of God and the cat-like reflexes of my sister’s friend, they managed to avoid it.

I’ve been spending much of the last two months hanging out at my best friend’s house before she moves to the western part of the state, eight hours away, at the end of the month. In the past two months, I’ve crashed on her couch approximately 24 times.

Up from naptime, got Sunday’s poke loin cooking.

[Jedi Mind Trick]This is the MMP you are looking for.[/Jedi Mind Trick]
And cute kitties. And I love the names.

Eek for the sis! but welcome back, Flipper.

We lost our previous cat, Kola, to old age about 3 1/2 years ago. It took us about a year after that, until we decided that we were ready for a new cat. After talking with several people about it, we set out to find a bonded pair to adopt, which proved to be more difficult than we thought.

We finally found a bonded pair of adult cats at an animal shelter near us, but when we went to meet them, they were complete slugs. They were about 8 years old, and had been owned (and overfed) by their former owner (an older lady who had to give them up). They were completely uninterested in interacting with us at all, which suggested to us that they weren’t the cats we wanted. The staff member said, “well, we have a pair of brother kittens, would you like to meet them?” They were adorable little spazzes, and we decided to take them.

As we were driving home with them, my wife said, “you know, we will need to pick a matched pair of names for them.” Being a big fantasy and science fiction fan, and as Tolkien is one of my favorite authors, the first suggestion that sprang to mind was, “Merry and Pippin.” It stuck.

So it shall be written; So it shall be done.

Welcome obi to our…sometimes peculiar but always fascinating part of the SDMB. Lots of cat people here, so you’ll find a sympathetic ear for any of their shenanigans.

nellie, sorry to hear about sister’s friend. Hope she and sis both do well.

hippie, nice to hear you’re a catch and release type; I think the last time I went fishing I was about 8 years old, so it’s never been an interest of mine, but I hear its a pretty calm and relaxing way to spend time.

flipper, glad you checked in and even gladder that Sister-unit is still with us.

Come down this way (N. Ali-bama) unknown; no problems finding fried green tomatoes here.

Soccer has been practiced with the 7-year old boys, who are getting a bit rambunctious these days…couple of them went to time-out. But one of the boys who doesn’t seem very motivated played extremely well tonight and I told him so, so maybe that will carry over. we’ll see.

Supposed to get down to 43F tonight, so have to decide what I want to set the heat at. Such problems.

All y’all take care.

Up until COVID, I went to Birmingham every month or two, as my main client is there. I’d never been to Alabama before starting on the account in 2015, but I like it. I haven’t been there since February of last year, and even though I generally would be happy to never go on another work trip again, I do miss going to Alabama.

For Fried Green Tomatoes, you are going to need a remoulade dipping sauce. Here’s mine:

  • 1 cup Duke’s mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon Louisiana-style hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons whole-grain mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons capers, roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 medium scallion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

It gets better if it sits in the fridge for a day.

Howdy Y’all! Home from the big called Vestry meetin’. Actually been home for a while but needed a snack first and then I settled in and read the very long MMP. Dang y’all been chatty today! Just to make it clear, I am about to end a three year term on the Vestry. Thus I must exit the Vestry when the three new members are elected at the annual meetin’ in January. Thus, I shall no longer be church janitor Junior Warden. It will be two years before I can be nominated to serve again. The by-laws say so, so it shall be. The location of the source of the wasps and the riddance thereof were accomplished today, hopefully. One never knows with wasps as they are Satan’s sneaky critters.

obi welcome. Come in anytime and talk about anything. That’s what we do 'round here. I liked travel for irk, but since I have become retired drain on society I can say I’m glad I don’t have to do so now. If I never get on a plane again, it will be fine by me.

Fried green maters, when done right, are da bomb! Even more so with a good comeback sauce. Comeback sauce, cause you will always comeback for more. Bunches of recipes out there. Use your google fu.

flipper good to hear from ya! Glad sis is OK.

Now I shall betake myself to bed. I’m tahrd.

Nitey Nite Y’all!

I thought about that, but FCD nixed the idea without discussion. At least with the plants inside, I don’t have to venture out into nasty weather to check on things.

Pretty kittehs, obi! One of mine is skittish, the other is an attention whore.

Ok, I’s tahred. Thinking it’s time to hit the sheets.

Same here. It was fun once upon a time; it’s not fun anymore, even if the destination is fun.

FCM FCD was probably right with nixing the blankets on the greenhouse, what with heating a outdoor thingy, fire hazards, blankets getting wet, etc. Maybe with blankets between layers of plastic, but I think you’ll be happier in the long run with the ease of hand shower wand, no going outside in crap weather, et al.

I’ve had some leftover yakisoba, now have the Sox on. Evening is going ok so far. Maybe some ice cream sammie later.

Oh, my gosh, that was hysterical! Why have I never seen that before? I thought the “Augie Ben Doggie” was a reference to Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy. I loved that cartoon as a kid. I think it was on Yogi Bear or maybe Huckleberry Hound?

Yikes, flipper! Glad your sister is OK. That must have been terrifying.

It was made around 1978, clearly for no more than a few hundred dollars. They used to show it, among other short films, at the library in Green Bay when I was a kid, and I, being the Star Wars nerd I was, even then, loved it. When it finally came out on VHS in the '90s, I had to buy it. (And, yes, it is also an Augie Doggie reference.)

Heard Mr. Orange outside (feline neighbor/friend), so I went out to say hi and give him attention. When I came back inside, he came in with me, sniffed around the entry area (including the Princess’s dishes), then headed back out. He did not avail himself of the water bowl or cat food, so I’m pretty confident at this point that he’s not a stray but actually does have people of his own. A stray likely would have grabbed the opportunity for a meal. I’ve been sure all along that he’s not feral, despite the tipped ear, because he is VERY friendly.

When the Princess (my cat, Allie) emerged from wherever she’d been hanging out, she sniffed me over with a somewhat irritated expression, but for once did not hiss about smelling another cat on me. She got treats, since I’m hoping to get her to make a positive association with smelling Mr. Orange.

Good thinking!

Does seem likely that he’s someone’s cat, who is allowed to wander outside, and has gotten into a scrap or two along the way. I have become an orange cat fan in recent years (see photo above).

And another stupid early day - thanks, bladder… :stuck_out_tongue:

FCD has PT at 8. I have to be at Roxy’s by 5. The rest of the day is pretty much up for grabs. Oh, yeah, I do have to empty the dishwasher, and I’ll probably push the vacuum cleaner around. So another exciting day in retirement…

And that video was a hoot! Can’t believe I never heard tell of it till now!

And so the day begins. Happy Tuesday! Send chocolate!!!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 43 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 83 and N.O.S. for the day. Today we shall launder. I also have a doc/vampire visit at eight forty-five this mornin’. Other than that we shall work on our sloth skills. Sup shall be boxed noodle cake (don’t judge!) sallit and cheesey garlic bread.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose, bother of bothers, I should purtify and don appropriate bein’ about the public attire. Woe is me.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Good morning everyone.

Another busy day awaits, plus I need to call someone about getting my furnace serviced/maybe repaired. It’s making a big noise when it cycles off, so something is not right. Sigh, mo’ money, mo’ money.

Yesterday’s training included some good nuggets of information, so it wasn’t a total waste of time.
