The "counting one's blessings" MMP

Morning all. Had a “FCM” kind of night, up at 2:00am and then slept on-and-off until 7am, so nappage may be in my future. The rains never showed up last night, we’ll see what today brings.

Sunny, somehow missed Beamer’s concussion. Hope he does Ok. As does Beanette on her Drs. appointment.

FCM, hope you’re well and FCD doesn’t do anymore damage.

My house is near the end of a cul-de-sac that ends with a fairly large wooded area. with all the housing construction in the area I’m amazed it hasn’t been developed yet, the story I was told years ago was that it is owned by a large family and they can never agree about selling it–how true that is I don’t know, but I’ll take woods over houses and traffic any day.

Heading for 76F so heater and AC will probably get the day off. Take care all.

FCM, fingers crossed the test comes out negative! I hope FCD takes it easy. Torn tendons are nothing to sneeze at.

I haven’t been out yet for my morning waddle - I had a meeting with the boss’s new boss. It was one of those discussions where she was super nice and easy to talk to, but I have absolutely no idea how it actually went. Guess I’ll find out from my boss at some point if it went really, really badly. At least I can wash my face now.

I put on makeup because I thought it might be a video call. Turns out I accidentally stabbed myself in the eye with mascara for nothin’. That’s okay, though. I’d have been kicking myself if I hadn’t slapped on some shellac and I’d had to be on camera.

Completely unrelated, I’m trying to figure out Halloween candy distribution this year. The neighborhood facebook group has decreed that all people handing out candy should set up a table at the end of their driveways with pre-portioned out baggies of candy, all spaced out so no one needs to touch more than one. The request is that at least one parent be present at the table at all times. I’d far rather slap a giant, unguarded bowl full of candy out on the porch and just not open the door, but I may get the hairy eyeball from the neighbors. I don’t want to be the asshole, but I’m also unlikely to be at home to play candy monitor. Also, my doors don’t open wide enough for me to even get a table out onto driveway.

Hmmm…maybe just don’t give out candy? My porch light works for the first time in years, dammit. I guess there’s always next Halloween.

Happy Thorsday!

It was a brisk 47 degrees at the park this morning. My son got off irk at 530, so I got ready for the park, went to get him, dropped him off at home, and drove to the park. I got there earlier than I wanted, but I didn’t want to go back in the house for 15-20 minutes. I thought I would be overdressed in my coat, but I was a bit chilly.
Echo behaved herself today, getting along well with Remus. Another new dog came in, a husky, and she was good with her.
Yesterday was not so good as she and Roxy (Dutch shepherd) fought several times. I’m not blaming it all on Echo though, Roxy has gone after Echo before.

Yesterday I was chilled after leaving the park. I took a long hot bath when I got home, then slept most of the day. I feel a whole lot better today.

Tonight, my son gets a barbeque dinner at irk. He thought it was steak. From what I have heard most people would rather have the barbeque. I hope my son likes it, but he is a picky eater so I don’t know. My friends say the mac and cheese is to die for, and I know my son will like that. I’m hoping there is enough left over that he can bring some home.
I want to leave early so we can stop at the gas station by his irk. Now both front tires are low on air. There should be an air pump there, it’s a huge, busy station.

I’m not doing anything for Halloween this year.
Two houses (same duplex) across the street have been decorated since the people moved in at the beginning of September. They keep adding more stuff. I think the two households are related as they seem to go back and forth to each other’s houses and there is always a bunch of people sitting on the porches. A lot of kids between the two. They’re probably a lot of fun, and surprisingly, pretty quiet.

I have a lot to do today, and probably won’t do any of it.

I once found a cigarette butt in an eggroll, and a worm in a salad. Cute little inch worm crawling in my lettuce. Since the eggroll was carryout, we just never got food from there again. I didn’t say anything about the worm. I was with a large group of co-workers and I didn’t want to ruin anybody’s dinner.

I’m wearing a bow tie today. Just because.

Well, twice in a row my grocery delivery has had everything I requested. Now if I could get some decent sleep, that would be lovely.

I don’t know why I thought of it, but I had to do a search on Cold Steel Emergency Rescue Knife ER1. I have two of them. I think the earlier one has an orange handle, and the other one has a black handle. Anyway, I see that a black one sold on eBay for $125 last August. Currently there are two new ones on offer for $155 and $235, respectively.

I’ve never used my two knives, and I don’t want to sell them. But it’s nice to know their value has appreciated. How’s that for a blessing?

Rain’s coming right down. Since I live in California, this is a good thing. I have the patio door open to enjoy the sound of significant rainfall. The Princess apparently disapproves, since there is now a Siamese-shaped lump under the covers of the bed (one of her more frequent “I don’t like something that’s going on” hiding spots).

The Instant Pot and I will be brewing chicken soup later.

Delivered the restaurant piece this morning, They are quite happy with it, so that’s nice. And I’ll be delivering the museum piece tomorrow. Then I’ll spend a day or 2 straightening up the shop. It’s kind of a mess right now.

Then I gotta find a new thing to build. I think it’ll be time to go talk to the gift store and find out exactly what she needs in the way of shelving that we vaguely discussed about a month ago.

Onward!

Great big pot of veggie beef soup simmering away. I foresee a good bit of it being frozen, since it’s impossible to make a small pot of soup.

Throat hurts less, but nose is a veritable faucet! I may crash in front of TV for a while, because I can.

Possibly stupid question, but how do you go about making vegetable beef soup with leftover meat? My Google-fu is failing me on this.

Shorthanded again. They sent the Panamanian dude to secondary, and I got sent to 200, and the Blueberries left. But I had to stay late, to finish up the damages. OT. Woe is me.
I stopped at Harris Teeter, I didn’t get the senior discount, I don’t know if I should be outraged that I didn’t get it, or happy that the cashier didn’t think I was a dottering old fossil
: waves at Mooooommmmm! :

Now you need a fez.

: sending positive thoughts for negative results :
and {{{hugs}}}} for the whole family thing.

Yay for early Fridays, Taters!

I cut up the leftover steak into small cubes, cooked it in olive oil with onions, then dumped in a can of diced 'maters, a carton of beef stock, a couple of cups of cubed spuds, a bag of frozen mixed vegges, a little burgundy, some Worcestershire sauce, thyme, basil, bay leaves, then simmered it. I did a similar thing with leftover pot roast, but the meat was shredded instead of cubed. Had I bought stew meat, I’ve have used that instead of leftover steak.

It’s done and in the fridge - when it’s cooled, I’ll put some into freezer bags and leave enough for tonight’s supper, which will be nukelated.

I’ve mixed up a batch of chocolate chip cookies, but the dough is in the fridge - I’ll bake them tomorrow. I’m just not up for it today. I feel like I’m reaching for a tissue every 5 minutes. My poor nose is getting raw. Stoopit nose.

ETA: old fossil??? Smart-ass young 'un!

I have two, one of which I bought back in the '80s or '90s. But I’m in the orifice today.

Heh. I was eating a bowl of granola and almond milk for breakfast this morning and one of the granola bits moved. Had to dump out the remains of the box of granola and make a egg and sausage on english muffin.

Got a decent night’s sleep, even with having to take Gibbs out at 4am. (He’s taking a diuretic, so has to go more often.) I went right back to sleep this time, fortunately.

Need to go give Gibbs his pills in a few. Wifey has discovered that he will eat them without balking if they are wrapped in a bit of bread pudding. I think there’s some left in the fridge.

All the more reason.

I thought I could get my run in before the rain started. I was wrong.

At least I don’t have to rinse out my running clothes.

So DH and quite a few of his co-irkers got hit with a layoff today (duration unknown). The company has plenty of projects, most of which are stuck in bureaucratic problems. He did get paid for thisweek (stone-age physical check, must be deposited soon), which will cover the waiting week for UI benefits.

Guess I’d better get the job hunt in gear myself (yes, I’ve been slacking off in favor of some long-overdue downtime and the home stuff).

On the plus side, the Princess LOVES her new toy that arrived today from Etsy. Wand toy with a felt catnip fishie and a tassel in lieu of feathers,

Nettie sorry to hear about the furlough for DH. I hope he finds something soon.

I have been curled up under the covers. The dogs are curled up on top of the covers, and the cats are littered about the house curled up in the cutest little balls. I’m not sure why the animals are cold. The temp inside is about what it usually is. General principles I guess.

I haven’t had the time to do any walking recently, so I made my weekly-ish Costco trip ‘official’. I parked at the far-ish end of the lot, and when I got back to the car I’d gotten just over half a mile of walking. Also pesto salmon, and beef ribs.

Sorry to hear about DH.

Mrs. L.A. got a wand toy for Goo and Abbey. Goo loves it. (Abbey thinks it’s OK.) It’s a pink felt fishie on a short pink wand and a short elastic string. The fishie has ribbons for a tail. A buck at Dollar Tree.

nettie I hope your hubs lands on his feet and quickly. It’s such a shame the pandemic UI is gone.

Our two younger cats love their wand toys, I wave one at our old guy and he just gives me one of those looks that cats are so good at.

Pinto beans are simmering and in about an hour I’ll start frying and mashing. I using that as an excuse to not go out and dig around in my needlework stash to find stuff to take to the convention. If it’s been in the shed for a couple of years, I probably don’t need it or I have replaced it with something “better”.

George keeps jumping on the counters. I suggested double sided tape, but hubs is afraid it will pull too much fur out. I happened to glance in the hobby room and saw that he had a bunch of lids for his tubs stacked up unused, so I brought them into the kitchen and balanced them half on and half off the counters. Hopefully a little instant negative reinforcement will help.

nettie – sending good vibes for DH, and that he (and/or you) can find a new gig quickly.

I got home a little bit ago, after spending most of the day doing work, while sitting in the office at my church. There were quite a few people who came in and out, so it was excellent to actually see people, as well as to hang out with my friend the church secretary.

Today is the 2-year anniversary of my father-in-law’s passing. He’d gone in to have his gall bladder removed in August of '19 (an outpatient laproscopy), and they discovered it was cancerous. It had already spread to other organs, aggressively enough that they were never able to even start chemo, and he was gone nine weeks later.

He and my wife were very close, and while she’s largely past the grieving, days like this are just hard for her. I’ve suggested that she think about what sort of “comfort food” she’d like for dinner tonight, and we’ll make it happen.
