Why do you need to know about Delaware? I’ll tell ya…
Are you still wondering where in the heck Delaware is? Well, since the Vice President-elect has represented Delaware since 1972 (ah, yay, voted for him in my very first election btw :)), it’s probably time to share a bit about my home state!
Yes, even though I spent time growing up in Michigan and have very fond memories of my time there, my actual birthplace was Wilmington Delaware. My mother’s family lives there and I believe I spent half of my first two years with my grandparents (I was the oldest, and Mom and Dad didn’t have a lot of money in those days, so my Mom’s parents took care of me for half the week) and after that, countless holidays and vacations there, until we moved to Delaware in 1963.
Wilmington is the largest city, but not the state capitol—that’s Dover, mid-state. Delaware is also one of the smallest states. All told, it’s less than 100 miles from top to bottom, and side to side, 30 miles maybe a bit more. Rhode Island is smaller. The DuPont family and their company are well known; they’re headquartered in Delaware; the state is also home to many companies as the laws are favorable to companies.
It’s a pleasant state, though, and certainly has nice beaches like Rehoboth, Bethany and Fenwick. For many years, the state was divided—as it actually is—by the Chesapeake and Delaware canal, into Up State and Down State, or Lower, slower Delaware as some say. I’ve lived down state also, where I went to high school; while I wouldn’t mind the small town life today, back in high school it seemed quite awful at times! I went to the University of Delaware too, for four years, although I am just shy of a degree. My college years are probably fodder for a different MMP.
Have you visited Delaware? Do you have any ties there? Please share!
