The Democratic National Convention

Rick Kitchen wrote: “It’s been eight years, and some people still can’t spell Barack correctly.” Give me a break. I usually get it right, I just inadvertently omitted the “C” and mental-blocked when my spell-check came up.

“You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here!”

Wow, Megyn Kelly is retweeting quotes from Hillary’s speech approvingly.

So, that’s what happens when they close a bar? Golly, what kind of people are still there?

I wasn’t shading you specifically, just a general comment.

I thought she was awesome. What bothers me is the crazy eyes and the fact that she tends to laugh at her own jokes before she gets them out, but Obama does that too. However, she did every thing I hoped she would:

Directly addressed the Bernie supporters and indicated that she was taking their goals seriously and integrating them into her campaign as well as blatantly telling them that the only way they will see ANY progress is to vote for her.

Acknowledged that there are things that are not working and that the recovery isn’t working for a lot of people and promising to work for them while at the same time supporting the work that Obama/Biden have done.

Appearing human and relatable while at the same time coming across as tough and steady enough to be CIC.

While I mostly credit some brilliant speechwriters, I think she threaded the needle perfectly. Each time I see her I’m more impressed. I’ll be frank, Chelsea’s speech worried me a little with the image of somebody who will drop everything to play with their grandchildren (not something we want if there is a crisis). However, I hope that she was able to impress others as much as she impressed me.

However-major fail on the card trick. Any idea what it was supposed to say?
And damn, Katy Perry cannot sing live, even when she doesn’t have ear monitor problems and I hate that song Firework, so minus 2 point for her.

Megyn Kelly is easily one of the best journalists in the biz. Shame she has to be associated with the joke that Fox News has allowed itself to become.

I got drawn into analyzing Hillary’s unique hypnotic effect. Obviously she has an awareness of beat and pacing, otherwise her sometimes plodding delivery wouldn’t be so… plodding. But plodding isn’t the point, awareness is. Her speechifying has been criticized to hell and back, and she has responded with poetic device and musicians’ tricks.

Left at that, you could say it’s contrivance (and it is!). But a kind of faith musicians have is that by cobbling enough mechanical devices together in just the right way and with the right execution, insight into the true feeling of the piece will be achieved, and it will be delivered simultaneously perfectly and un-selfconsciously.

I thought Hillary was kind of pissed off.

It would have been interesting if somebody a little boorish had poked her a little too hard in the jacket with a dirty stick, just to piss her off a little more. She’d have been even better. The feeling is ‘pissed off’. She has the answers (arguably, heh), but she gets kicked around, trash-talked, put on Benghazi commission hearings, and lots more over the years, let’s face it. She’s honed her conceptions of problems and solutions in line with her values, she’s willing to focus her bright mind on improvement of the delivery, and I think the hypnosis of it sort of disguises how pissed off she is, even though it is right out there front and center.

She knows how to seek the common good (arguably, heh), but has never had the power to implement her solutions. It pairs well with the theme of female inspiration/grievance. Government can support the idea of equal rights, but ultimately every citizen has a duty to themselves to defend their own rights. I guess it is okay for women to be pissed off when they fight, when they fight right and make sense and command the facts behind the conclusions, and have the ambition to gain the power to implement the solutions she can demonstrate are correct.

It is hard to be pissed off and also somnombulant. On the contrary, Hillary’s unique hypnotic effect pulls minds toward the somnombulance of persuasion. You can see her. You can feel her. Pretty inspiring convention overall, and I have a tendency to approach political displays as a great big honky snarkmeister.

It’s not misogyny. There is a way for everyone, men and women, to show force and strength without being overbearing. Trump is overbearing, but it works well-enough for him.

To the extent there is a stereotype, Hillary plays right into it. Since you are not saying I am wrong, maybe powerful women can learn from it and refrain from doing this sort of stuff.

Well, she put on one hell of a convention. It didn’t feel like a second rate, on-the-cheap high school musical put on by the school bully, like the Republicans’ convention.

She gave everyone their moment, is clearly not threatened or insecure about utilizing their special talents in her corner – and they are considerable. Those folks are all also now free to go forth in a committed fashion and drive home their messages. Finally. She has a lot more knowledgeable, impressive surrogates who are passionate for her message and a far more unified party.

I doubt even the Bernie Bros’ fart fest created much of a stink.

So on MSNBC they just interviewed “Congressman Sean Maloney and his husband Randy.”

First, I really love how matter-of-factly it was said.

Second - Hi there fellas!

I agree with David Brooks, who was commenting for the NPR coverage, that of all the major speeches made at both conventions, the weakest were by the candidates themselves. Both went on too long, Trump being like an angry marmot, and Hillary doing the policy wonk thing. The difference is that Hillary’s speech had substance and positiveness, while the Big Cheese Puff’s had nothing but venom and zero substance. I liked that she basically pointed a finger at Trump and said “game on, you wanker”.

And now to the hard work of actually getting her elected…

Well, I just donated $500 to her campaign, so that’s a start.

/applause

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty came out on stage wearing the same puffy sleeved dress that Melania wore.

Did they actually go through with this?

I too!

But not $500…

The comments solicited by C-SPAN from the public at large just depress me. So much ignorant conspiracy theory nonsense… endless hand-flapping and overheated false rhetoric.

“Hillary Clinton did her college thesis on Saul Alinsky!! So Donald Trump understands the Constitution.”

Whut???

If they did, it hasn’t hit any of my news sources yet. Hence my comment.
