The Democratic National Convention

I’d love to hear him say something like, “Some of my supporters think Trump isn’t that dangerous, or that once he burns the world down, a better one can be built on its ashes. I find these assumptions cynical and dangerous.”

I understand he only drinks grain alcohol and rainwater.

I think Bernie will probably give a half-assed endorsement. It won’t be a Ted Cruz ‘vote your conscience’ moment but I also believe he’s going to have a hard time looking people in the eye and telling everyone how much he believes in a Hillary-Kaine ticket – and that may not be entirely a bad thing either. Bernie’s greatest asset is his appearance of authenticity, so if he can at least make the case that Trump is the danger and that Hillary is the way to prevent this danger and maybe get some of what they want in the process, then that makes Sanders credible, and it makes the Clinton-Kaine option at least more palatable to some voters.

As much as I want Hillary to win, I can’t say that I can blame Sanders voters. I felt as though they were trying to come around and give her the benefit of the doubt, and probably would have if she had nominated someone like Elizabeth Warren or even a guy like Corey Booker. But in the end, Hillary deliberately, eyes wide open, made a choice that veered in completely the opposite direction, and in doing so she is sending signals about the kind of administration she’s going to have. I’m not necessarily disagreeing with the decision of Kaine, either, as it’s a solid choice in many respects. However, Kaine doesn’t have strong progressive credentials and neither does Hillary. I suppose Clinton can try to convince Sanders supporters that she’s capable of moving to the left this time, but as we all know, she has a bit of a credibility problem.

At this point, Hillary’s campaign has made its choice, and the voters will make theirs. I can only hope that Sanders supporters will buy the argument that stopping Trump and the republicans is a matter of extreme urgency and that Hillary is the only way to achieve this objective. But that’s not really the strongest argument one can make to sell Hillary to a nation of skeptical voters.

85% of the Sanders supporters have already come to support Clinton. Screw the rest. Picking Warren wouldn’t have helped, these people are a mix of anarchists/greens/Libertarians that almost never cast a Democratic ballot in the general election. Trying to placate some fickle Green in California isn’t how to win, winning suburban voters in Columbus Ohio and northern Virginia is. Clinton/Kaine are the adults in the room, a contrast between a mad egomaniac/religious fanatic.

We all knew that DWS was in the Clinton camp from day 1, no surprise that internal emails give credence to that. That being said, Sanders isn’t going to do anything that would help elect Trump, he’s fully aware of how crucial this election is. He may not give a ripsnorting fire and brimstone bring down the house speech for Hillary, but he will leave no doubt that the right thing for his followers is to vote for her.

After a week of the White Power Convention, it will be nice to see a convention where the participants actually look like all of us. The cameramen aren’t going to have to scour the arena looking for a black face, there’ll be some in every shot. Hillary’s bounce is going to wipe out Trump’s several times over.

Bernie won’t need to address this issue if the plan to let DWS speak tonight and gavel the convention open stays in place. I was just watching her speak to the Florida delegation at a breakfast meeting and the place had a large contingent of protesters trying to shout her down. She basically got booed off the stage. If she takes the podium at 4pm to gavel the convention open it is likely to be much much worse.

She needs to be kept out of sight or this could well be the story of the day. Not a good way to start.

Bedlam erupts as Wasserman-Schultz speaks to Florida delegates

Obama needs to tell her to take a vacation. No convention, no HRC campaign, nothing until after the election. The worst thing that could happen tonight is Wasserman-Schultz being booed. On “United Together” night.

Just go.

Actually, I wonder if letting her address the Florida delegation was actually quite clever. The Die hard Bernie loving DWS hating fanatics got to blow of their steam and heckle her. Now maybe they’ll act like adults and behave themselves at the convention .

Sanders will NOT mention DWS during tonight’s speech, spokesperson confirms.

I doubt it. Some of the die-hards have been spoiling for a fight for a while. This email business just got them all riled up. I am guessing the Florida meeting was just a warm up for what they would do on the convention floor if she shows up.

I doubt it also. And there will be a lot more of them tonight. It will sound like chaos, even if the reality isn’t as bad as it looks.

Two things I would like to see:

  1. Bill Clinton stand up and say “Don’t judge Hillary on my mistakes, they are mine, not hers.”
I know that wont change any of the rabid haters, but I think its a good stake in the ground. So that future attacks along that lines have at least had some of the legs cut out.

  2. Hillary needs to admit she has a trust issue with America and come out with a “Yes, i have been accused of many things… This has happened because while I make mistakes I never give up… i’m always in the fight and i’m always fighting for you. The only people never criticized are the ones who don’t show up… and I show up.”
Or something along those lines more eloquent then my feeble speech writing skills!

John Oliver made a good point on his show last night about how feelings become facts. The feelings for Hillary are not based in any real facts, but they have been pounded at folks for so long that “people don’t FEEL Hillary is trustworthy…” that now the feeling is the fact.

She need to change that. There is no doubt that of the two she is the most qualified by a few dozen miles… but people voted for GWB over Al Gore because GWB seemed more like someone they would want a “beer with”.

She needs to aim for the “Feels” of the American people

Wasserman to not gavel in convention today.

Sanders got booed by his own supporters at a breakfast with California delegates today, when speaking and urging them to support Clinton.

I’m seeing stories that DNC officials were booed, but not seeing it was Sanders, himself, being booed. Do you have a link?

Here’s one:

I’m seeing reports that Clinton has hired DWS as “honorary campaign chair”. The only sources I can find are places like Common Dreams, Washington Examiner, or Politico. I’m can’t find any really mainstream news organizations reporting it so I can’t swear that it’s true. If it is it’s a really bonehead move.

Honorary campaign chair is a meaningless thing – Lincoln Chaffee and Eva Longoria were “honorary campaign chairs” for Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

But there’s a symbolism to it that does not look good.

Perhaps.
