This Jersey Girl experienced her first California earthquake last night, about 1:30 AM PT. Centered about 30 miles from here, 5.2 on the Richter.
The closet doors rattled, lamps shook, hell the whole house shook. It was terribly strong here, so nothing broke are fell or anything, but it was strong enough to see everything wiggle like jello and feel it under my feet. I had trouble getting to sleep afterwards, I assume from a slight adrenaline high. (OK all you Bay area vets, stop rolling your eyes at the rookie!) I feel initated into the area now, I am an offical NorCal resident. Yippee!
Damn I forgot a link, here ya go.
5.2 Quake Hits Calif. Wine Country
By the gods!!
That should have read it wasn’t terribly strong here. OK, I need to proofread. Maybe I can just post corrections to my own thread all day long. Cripes.
Scary.
And you people live there on purpose. ::shudder::
A 5.2 is actually a nice little earthquake. Melin complains that I sleep through most of them, unless they get to be bigger than that. Of course, she wakes up at all of them and then wakes me up anyway.
Oh damn! My grandparents live in Napa! I hope they are okay. I haven’t received any frantic phone calls in the last couple of days, so I’m guessing they are fine.
I saw this thread just after I looked at Demo’s link about tossing salad. I was sooo scared about what I was gonna find here.
Pffft!! Lightweight! We had aftershocks bigger than that in Japan. The biggest quake we were ever in was a 7.5 that brought our ceiling down.
Seriously, though, I know that your first experience with what is supposed to be solid, stable ground suddenly moving under you can really, well, shake you up. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to having to straighten the pictures every couple of weeks.
Oh yeah, and that whole “stand under a door frame” thing? Sorry, ain’t buyin’ it. When the structure full of heavy metal, cement and wooden things I am in starts rocking, I am **out of there **, if I possibly can. In fact, after the 7.5, I bought a pair of hard rubber soled slippers that I wore constantly when I was in the house, so I could run out at a moments notice.
That was a little something I cooked up for Omni’s visit. Didn’t want him to come all the way out here and be disappointed.
Boy am I glad we moved from Cali (oakland) back in the mid 80s.
Bah to all of you pansies who are scared of quakes!
Anyway, cool psy! Yeah, the 5 pointers can be a bit exciting. I remember a couple of years ago lying on my futon and it started to shake. It worked its way up to a 5 pointer, and it kind of freaked me out (the bed was shaking hard). I had a flash back to the 89 loma prieta. Fortunately nothing fell here.

I live in Concord and felt it (I was actually up reading these boards at the time!). Kind of a gentle, rocking motion. Nothing to get excited about. Down here, anyway.
These leading titles gotta go!!
You may all worship me now…
I live in The City, on the 6th floor. It was fun, I enjoyed the ride. My boyfriend was at an orgy in the Castro, he said he didn’t feel a thing.
Yeah right!
For those of you not in California, check this out.
The California Experience
My husband woke me and said, “Earthquake!”
I yawned and said, “No it’s not, don’t wake me up.”
I guess he has to be right once in a while.

Yes we do and we like it!!!
Slept through it. Didn’t know there was an earthquake til this morning when my dad asked me if I felt it. 5.2 is just a baby quake. I guess there was some serious damage in Napa. To me this proves not how strong the quake was, but how shoddy the construction in Napa must be.
BTW, anyone scared to come to California because of the earthquakes is a wimp, not to mentioned paranoid. In 21 years of living here, I have felt a whopping FOUR earthquakes. And three were so small that they barely merited mentions on the evening news. BTW, I now have proof that hurricanes cause more destruction than earthquakes: in Florida (according to my pal Sani) one cannot insure their first floor unless they have a single-story house. Hurricanes are such a liability that insurance companies would go out of business if they insured the first floor. In California, you can get earthquake insurance for whatever the hell you want. I’m not scared of quakes, but please smack me if I ever mention wanting to move to Florida.
It was my first Earthquake!
And it happened right after I turned 18. Weird…
It did scare me though, pretty badly. I went to Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, and I refused to ride any of the rides, cuz I didn’t want to be on one if there was another earthquake. I know, I know, not entirely logical. But, hey, that’s me.
5.2, shheesh. Thats not worth gettin out of bed for.
