Years ago I heard a song on the oldies station that had a chorus that sounded something like “do the eggy walk.” But when I tried to google it later, there was no such song. Obviously I misheard the lyric.
The song was a Motown number, similar to “Heatwave”, and had that same kind of Martha and the Vandellas sound. Female vocalist. The only other line I can remember from it is “dancin’ shoes.”
Figured this board would be a good place to ask, since there seems to always be someone who knows the answer. And I’m bound to feel like an idiot when the real lyrics are revealed. Eggy walk?! What was I thinking?!
It doesn’t sound particularly Motown-ish to me–it’s a jazz number–but could it be It’s a Raggy Waltz, by Dave Brubeck, with vocal by Carmen McRae?
It doesn’t contain the words “dancing shoes” specifically, but there is a lot of stuff about “dancing with me” and “getting out on the dance floor,” and suchlike.
I still have the vinyl 45 rpm record that I borrowed from a friend and forgot to give back. However, it is packed away where I can’t get at it right now, so I can’t look up the artist. I remember that the B side was Two Happy People, but I just can’t remember the group.
Apparently, neither Google nor YouTube have heard of this song, or maybe I’m not searching correctly, but I am sure this is it.
