The emergency MMP

OK, a bit more time to post now. First off, hugs to all sickies and relatives of sickies.

And, too late, but worth noting anyway: The moistestest turkey, in my experience, is one that is cooked low and slow overnight. You put whatever seasonings on that you like, then pop it in the oven at 300F for an hour, then turn it down to (I think) 180 - about 10° above what you want the final internal temp to be. Depending upon the size of the bird, it takes from 10-14 hours, but it’s yum and moist and and wonderful.

Our turkey feast was on Monday at the middle brother’s house. We’d never been there - it’s about 100 miles from Ocala, so it was a looooooooooong day. But it was a nice visit. SIL was very excited - about 15 years ago, she’d had to sell her mother’s dining room set and she’d always regretted it. She did write back to the woman she’d sold it to and said she’d like first shot if the woman ever wanted to sell it again. Well, the woman died and her daughter didn’t want to use it, and she knew about the letter, so she contacted SIL and sold it back to her. It’s a beautiful set of workmanship made in Belgium a long time ago. And it was in perfect shape.

On Tues, we showed up at the hospital around 9 as told, but MIL didn’t go into surgery till 3-ish. We talked to the doctor about 6:30, learned all went well, then **FCD **and I went home, exhausted. FIL and youngest BIL followed about 3 hours later once she was settled in her room. They had her up and around on Weds, and she was back at the house about 4:30 that afternoon - less than 24 hours after surgery! It’s amazing. Today will probably be her worst day, but she said already, the pain in her legs is gone. Mainly she’s dealing with the pain from the surgical site.

She was doing fine on Thurs morning, so we split about 10:30. Like I said earlier, there was no traffic, and we made such good time, we decided it’d be dumb to stop only 2 or 3 hours from home, so we drove on and got here about 11:30. Huzzah for sleeping in my own bed!!

This morning, daughter and friends are in DC, probably freezing their butts off. My sweetie and I went out to breakfast, then to his favorite fish store. We came home with a lion fish. It’s going to be turned loose in the tank shortly. I’ll try to get some pics.

My plans for today - knitting. Maybe tidying my studio. Maybe not. I’m still pretty pooped. It’s very windy and the ground is soggy, so I can’t tend to all the accumulated leaves. It’s supposed to stay dry all weekend, so maybe by Sunday afternoon, I can run the mulcher/vac and clean up the yard. Maybe…

Oh, and I loved the Muppet Rhapsody!

Off to forage for leftovers.

Fish pics!!! Start with this one and page thru to see them all we’ve got so far.

**FCD **just ran back to the restaurant where we had breakfast. His crackberry is there. Thankfully, whoever found it is honest.

Cool pics, **FCM. ** Salt water fish are so pretty.

Hi gang!

I’ve been slacking on the MMP - and the computer in general. I hope everyone had a good holiday and/or Thursday! Hugs to the sick, smooches to the healthy.

My turkey day was extremely tiring, but well worth it! My turkey was Teh Yum. I brined it, and it was moist and flavorful and perfectly brown. My son and his half-sister came to dinner, as well as son’s roommate. We watched a lot of football and a good time was had by all.

I had a bit too much fun, methinks. I have a bit of a headache today. I’m looking forward to cocktail time for a hair of the dog, to tell you the truth.

No cooking for me tonight! Leftovers will be nummy. I had a turkey sammich for lunch, too - and I just had a piece of punkin’ pie.

Your aquarium is awesome, FCM!

Howdy Y’all! Well, so much for family visitation and THE PARTY this weekend. Da bear must work late tomorrow and also work Sunday. :frowning: Ok, not too sad, though I wanted to go up to visit, it’s mucho extra monies which is good.

WB MOOOOOOM! Cool fishes. What’s that thing with all the appendages comin’ off of it. Looks skeery!

Taters glad dindin went well. Mayhaps gt will add the corn stuff to the blog for future reference.

BBBobbio you’re all battered and bruised, but did you get the vacuum?

Dotty sounds like what I did yesterday only with turkey and dressin’.

Swampy, the fish you’re referring to is a Lionfish. Their spines are actually poisonous.

They are stunning to look at though.

lights candles for Bobbio

I had to go to Pet$mart to get crickets for the frog and a bag of cat food for Petercat since the good stuff he’s decided he likes is on sale. While I was out I got a fiber optic tree for Christmas. I forgot to get batteries for it. :smack: Walked around the store for five minutes trying to remember what else I needed to get, didn’t remember until I walked out to my car. :smack::smack:

I bought some clothes (online, of course) from Old Navy and browsed a few other places but I couldn’t find any basic pullover sweatshirts. Ok, yeah, I found a make your own sweatshirt at Zazzle but it was $30! Waaaaay too much for a sweatshirt if you ask me.

Yes, the vacuum cleaner was successfully obtained. We even put it together for them before delivering it, and part of the cleaning wand was missing . Ordered that, and it’s supposed to be delivered to them directly.

In other news, I just got back from a cardiac arrest. Another one bites the dust…

Urgh. Yesterday Nat had a blood sugar crash at bedtime, and got to stay up late eating cookies. Tonight he does not understand why he can’t repeat the experience.

Can I hit him with a cricket bat and then sell him to passing Gypsies?

*mmmmmm *- punkin pie!! Not as tasty as mine, but edible nonetheless.

One nice thing about the long-ass ride to FL and back and sitting in the hospital - I made 2 more kidlet afghans and most of a third. I’m finishing up the squares for the third before I start assembling it. I hate doing squares - I won’t do any more like this…

The young 'uns just got back from their DC adventure. They’ve adjourned to the basement for karaoke. We called it “skarey-oke”… One couple is leaving in the morning. The other leaves on Monday. Then our house is ours again. Yay!

**LiLi **- why not just bat him at a band of passing gypsies??

For not doing anything much all day, I’s tahred. I’ll be crawling into bed soon - after I move all the crap off our bed. I really should unpack our bag. Maybe in the morning. Maybe…

I also found this.

As a last resort, OneStopPlus.com always has fleece stuff.

I’m back! (What? You notice I was gone??? :dubious: :D)

Yay for promising news, Dotty! And thanks for the link. I’ve already shared it with several other people. (We were listening to a Queen album last night at my nephew’s request; my brother thought it was odd that the album didn’t have Bohemian Rhapsody on it, so he was one of the link recipients, of course.) Also: Eid Mubarak back atcha!

Glad the turkey turned out well, Taters. I’ve never had problems with lesser-known brand turkeys (one of the best turkeys I ever made was a sto otre brand one). I made a turkey breast again, in a crockpot with onion soup mix (can’t remember if I added that recipe to the blog last year). Turned out awesome. Literally fell off the bone, which was fine with us. (Similar to the slow-oven turkey, I’ll bet.) I’ll add the corn recipe momentarily. Sounds yummy.

That was my reaction too. I am easily amused. Sounds like you had a fun time - sorry you have to miss THE PARTY, but the OT sounds pretty good too.

Not a no-no at all, Ruble. I’d been thinking of linking to it as well. And keep meaning to send him something to upload.

Glad MIL’s surgery went so well, FCM! Those are very cool fishies, too. Loved the dining set story, too. I want the dining room set that my mom has in Mexico. It was my grandmothers and is really cool. Of course, it would cost a fortune to ship up here and would never fit in my house, so…not happening.

Sorry about the cardiac arrest, Bobbio. Am I awful because my first thought was something like “Ohhh, another Queen song!”? But you’re a good good neighbor to brave Wally*World and put the vacuum together. And thanks for the volunteering.

Poor Nat! And poor LiLi! I imagine the worst of it is that he can’t completely understand what diabetes is about yet. Hugs.

I spent the holiday with my brother, niece and nephew. Nice, relaxed dinner, with preparation kept to a minimum. I made pumpkin pie (with a Pillsbury crust because my pie-crust-making skills are pathetic) with the Libby’s recipe, but with 1/2 t of Penzey’s Baking Spice instead of cloves. It turned out very nicely. Also made the usual sweet potatoes with orange zest and pecans. Yum.

Niece had a sleepover, so we played games after she left: Texas Hold 'Em (played with nephew’s rules, which may or may not be the standard rules), Apples to Apples, and something else I’m forgetting.

Got up very early this morning to make the trek back and go in to work. Got lots done, although I need to go in early Monday to get one really important item finished off.

Tired now…Guess I’ll relax a while, maybe work on my sock (it’s almost done!) and watch something.

Hugs to all - hope everyone’s feeling better.

I saw **Doggio **on the Jumbotron at the Canes game!

Gnat’s cookie problems remind me of that story y’all are probably sick of by now, about the utter terror of my grandmother when, during the prep session for her gallbladder surgery, the surgeon said “and of course you’ll have to modify your diet.” Now, for some reason docs tend to forget that most laymen don’t think of diet as meaning “what you eat,” but “eating very little and maybe real weird.” You know, “artichoke diet.”

She interrupted him for clarification (switching to Catalan out of nerves, they weren’t even in Catalonia, as she got treated at our local hospital rather than hers) “whatdoyoumeanadietohmygodwhatkindofdietwhatdietisthisnobodysaidanythingaboutadiet!”

You have to realize this is a woman who thinks anything can be healed by eating. You have a cold? She’ll ask “what did you do to catch a cold?” while setting up a bit pot of chicken soup to brew. You have cancer? It’s because you eat too weak, let’s feed you more jam-and-butter-on-bread, and none of that marguerine thing either. Her worst problem with the gallbladder acting up was that eating made her sicker - unbelievable. In her world that’s just beyond the laws of physics.

The doctor started to explain “well, you should reduce your fat intake and eat several small meals rather than a few big ones…” and Mom turned to Grandma (who still hadn’t stopped except for unavoidably required air intake in the form of huge gasps) and said “Mom, he just means you have to go on eating as usual.”

“Eat normal?”

“Yes, Mom.”

“I just go back to eating normal?”

“Yes, you do. Twenty five times a day. Or one, depending on how it’s counted.”

“Oh. Oh, OK! So why did he scare me like that?”

[halo]“I have no idea.” [/halo]

We understand that stomatologist learned to ask people about their dietary habits before telling them they’ll have to modify them.

Sadly, it’s going to be a while before Gnat can grasp how and why he’s got to eat different than he used to… {{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. YAWN

LiLi they’d just bring him back.

Puck we need clarification. Did you see doggio’s face bein’ shown on the Jumbotron or was he literally on the Jumbotron. We are talkin’ doggio after all.

Up, thanks to Scruffy the Nag. I had just snuggled down all comfy after an early-morning-dash-to-the-potty, when I heard a bark. And I remembered that I hadn’t taken her out before going to bed. So I pawed around in the dark till I found my robe and my slippers, left my sweetie sleeping, and did my dogly duties. And here I am.

Idiot Taz has opened the pantry 3 times already this morning, and I have no idea what he’s hoping to find in there. I don’t think he knows either. Idiot.

Two of our guests were going to get up early since they’re driving to Missouri today. Yeah, I know, insane!!! But it’s 6:30 and their car is still out there and I hear no sounds from the basement. I guess their definition of early is different from mine.

Plans for the day include a dump run - we’re finally getting rid of the blue bathtub as well as the pink recliner. Plus whatever else we can fit on the trailer. Gotta get our $10 worth!

swampster, I laughed at your clarification remark, then I had a mental image of **doggio **in a Spiderman suit climbing across the Jumbotron. And it seemed oddly normal. heh

Off to surf some more!

Up, caffeinated off to work.

swampy, I was on the screen.

Do you mean on the screen or *on *the screen…

Oh, never mind. It was funnier in my head.

Well on the 15th, I was on the ice in a giant sumo suit.
