kai, you should be writing travel books. Oh, and please put one of those puppies in the CD drive to me. kaithxbai.
haze, I’m wondering if it’s acid reflux.
boofae, I am on tenterhooks waiting to hear TK’s reaction.
I have to share a thought from yesterday when the news carried stories from both Israel and South Korea. I realized that the stories were much more meaningful to me now that I actually know nooney and haze. That’s at least one good thing about “teh Internet.”
You all would have had a good laugh if you could have seen me on Saturday. Lil Lestat[sup]TM[/sup] came over on a little 50cc Honda scooter he bought for his girlfriend and insisted I take it for a spin. What a sight! An old broad going about 2 miles an hour up and down the street.
You know, I really don’t feel like cooking, but we need food to eat for the next few days. I’m not going Real Grocery Shopping (to Costcovia :D) until Wednesday, but I think until then we’ll survive on a couple kinds of frozen lasagne, which I’ll buy and cook today. And maybe cake. Oh, and pasta, and chili. Got those in the freezer.
Thanks. It’s a bit different though - I taught six community college classes last semester, which works out to eighteen hours a week, and that was a really tough schedule. But most of that is because of the prep/grading involved. My new classes are going to be much more stressful physically, since I’ll be on my feet for six hours straight, yelling at a bunch of kids, but there’s very little prep or grading involved, so in some ways it’ll be easier.
Guess y’all are just starting to get up. I’m getting ready for bed. Funny how that works.
Howdy, all. Beautiful OP, kai; one of these days I am going to visit your corner of paradise. It’s one of my Top 5 places in the world I want to see. And your descriptions truly bring it to life – you have a real gift for words there!
Teaching 30 hours a week, [color=purple]Haze[/color}? You really do have a wide masochistic streak there, don’t you? :dubious: I hope the tummy thing turns out to be nothing of great import, though I don’t know why you would be claiming you have any stress in your life.
There’s sure a lot of tenterhooks around here recently! But I, too, am all agog at Tin Knickers’ reaction to your resignation. Do tell all, please!
So true. The first time Papa Tigs and I ever corresponded individually was after the Kobe earthquake – I knew he lived in Japan, just not where (we were in an online discussion group together), and wrote to ask if he was okay. His response? “What earthquake?” Turns out he was over a thousand miles away, so hadn’t known about it till several of his online friends wrote him to ask about it.
And then I compare my parents’ experience going to India, where once a week they wrote an airmail letter home (remember those flimsy self-sealing airmail letters?), with my experience joining Papa Tigs in Japan, where I got online and was instantly visiting live with my friends. It sure makes the world a smaller place and faraway places seem more real, doesn’t it?
Anyway, enough rambling. I should be off to do something useful. What, I haven’t decided; I have paying work to do, but also more housework to do (I want that cleaning lady, dammit!). Except that my back is informing me that perhaps yesterday I overdid it just slightly. As in I’m aching from head to toe slightly. So we shall see. I’ll probably do sorting today rather than cleaning; I have a pile of books to go through to decide what to give away and what to keep. That’s a sit-down kind of job.
Don’t everybody have too much fun [de]tyda[/de] today!
And a wonderful description of Alaska. We saw a couple eagles yesterday too. That’s one of the things I love here - in my first year here I saw more eagles than I’d seen in my whole life up to that point. And yet it’s still not a mundane thing. I still get excited every time I see them.
We also saw a few American white pelicans flying over the same lake as the eagles. They’re really cool looking too, with big wingspans and pretty big bodies as well. Last fall we saw a huuuuuuge flock of them taking off and heading south. Really neat. I think we’ll have to try to go look for them again this fall.
We donated blood on Saturday morning (Thanks for reminding me, whoever talked about it last week!) but that meant we didn’t do too much else. We take the recommendation to take it easy post-donation seriously.
And after 6 months in our townhouse, I finally decided that I needed to go around and introduce myself to the neighbors. (4 of the 5 other units filled up after we moved in.) So I made some cookies (gotta show up with food to make a good impression!) and started… and met exactly 1 other couple before my shyness won out and I gave up. Hopefully tonight there’ll be people sitting outside and I can just stop by and stay hi without having to actually knock on people’s doors.
Hubby’s sister is getting married in September, and a friend of my parents is letting us borrow their condo in Milwaukee for that weekend. Yay! So we’ll have a place to stay but won’t be in the in-laws’ hair while they’re doing wedding stuff. Plus, we can bum around Milwaukee for the weekend when we’re not doing wedding stuff. Should be fun.
Yay on the resignation, BooFae! I feel bad for the poor unsuspecting new person who comes in though. If you get to meet your replacement, maybe you can convince them to become a Mumper and continue to bring us tales of TK…?
Good luck with the 30 hours of teaching, Haze. That’s a lot! It’s one thing to sit in front of a computer for 30 or 40 hours a week, and quite another to stand in front of a classroom for 30 hours. That’s going to be rough! Take care of yourself. We worry about you!
I suppose I should get to work… but it’s a 3-day week this week. And I donwanna!
Mornin’ all. Wonderfully descriptive OP, kai. I can’t look at the puppies right now, but I’m sure they’re cute. After being out of work last week, I’ve got a lot to catch up on. Ugh.
I read sporadically from last week’s MMP, but don’t remember much. More ugh.
I spent last week in Illinois visiting my family and getting rid of stuff from my childhood and college years. Everything else was packed up neatly and will be joining me in Boston in September when my mom and her two sisters make the trek to visit me. I have no idea where I’ll put all of that stuff, so it’s going to be interesting.
Sounds absolutely lovely kai the perfect place to hang out.
And the puppies!! What sort of dogs are they? Soooo cuuuuute squee!
I haven’t been around much. Maybe I’ll be around more often this week. Not tonight and maybe not tomorrow though… for Canada day. Tonight is a drunken Wii tennis party…
Mornin’! Great OP, Kai. Sounds like a beautiful place; I’ve mentioned before I love places like that. I just couldn’t live outside the city. Those are absurdly cute pups, too.
I’m at work, stuck between the weekend and tomorrow’s statutory holidays. It’s bloody slow here because half of the business that have accounts with us are closed for a kind of day off preparatory to a day off. By all rights we should be closed too, but … meh.
No special plans for tomorrow. Gonna take some fireworks pictures tomorrow night. Maybe I can catch some nice displays.
My blog partner in crime seems to have disappeared into the mists. Ever since he got a full-time job working nights and a steady girlfriend he’s been more or less incommunicado, showing up on MSN only once or twice in the last couple of weeks and having posted only one blog entry since then too. (I haven’t been much better, but I’ve been putting in what I can when I can.) Not that I’m upset with him, it’s just a strange absence.
Oh, I don’t know if I mentioned it, but my parents just adopted a ten-year old cocker spaniel froma a dog rescue place. He arrived on Friday, and so far has won all arguments about where he’s supposed to sleep, how much he’ll eat, and how much time they’ll spend at home.
I haven’t met him yet, but I probably will on Thursday.
I forgot to mention earlier - McUne, thanks for the suggestion to look for bell peppers in packages. I got 4 for $3.60ish (can’t remember exactly) as opposed to the individual ones being $4.99/lb or about $2.50 each! Does anyone know why they’re so much cheaper in packages than individually? In any case, a big YAY for reasonably-priced peppers!
My arteries clogged up just reading that recipe. Methinks I’ll stick to living vicariously through you, LiLi.
I bought soup for N.O.L. It cost me just over $6 for what amounts to a bowl of rather bland cream of broccoli soup and a glorified dinner roll. Clearly, this is the universe reminding me that I should probably start packing a lunch again, because I can make a whole pot of soup AND buy a really nice baguette for that kind of money. Eeeesh.
It sounds lovely, kai. How much sunlight are you getting now? (I mean how many hours per day)
I am back from food foraging. I had a coupon for $10 off if I spent $160–usually not a problem. Wouldn’t you know it, this week my total came to $158.46? So, I bought a pack of playing cards–and then she told me the total doesn’t include the tax, so I was still short. Grrr. So, I grabbed Glamour, figuring Daughter would read it (I find Cosmo too skanky), and then remembered I had forgotten bread. I sent the bagger back for the bread, forgetting about the playing cards. There is now a line behind me–very embarrassing. Bagger threw the bread in my tote after the cashier rang it up–total now with coupon was $158.67. I got home and unloaded.
Daughter has already read this Glamour–because I bought it for her 2 weeks ago. No memory of this.
Bagger brought me the wrong bread.
We don’t play cards.
Can someone tell me if any of this was worthwhile? I’m thinking not, but the math confuses me. Go ahead, make all the fun you want. I happen to be exceptionally good looking and important–I have people to do math FOR me. So there.
All I can say is, I tried.
 I have not seen TVMan since my birthday weekend and I was planning to spend the upcoming long weekend with him. Now I’ve got freebie crap to do both on Thursday before I leave town and Saturday too.
ETA: Not to mention that it’s been the same amount of time since I’ve had a day off.
It’s a good thing Mr Lissar is so tall. Plenty of space for all that whipped cream to hide.
I will not go outside to the ice cream truck to get a cone. Nope. Not going. Not even THINKING of going.
…but then again, I really do deserve a treat after spending aaaaalll day looking at boring spreadsheets, so maybe if he’s still there when I’m done with this one?
I just wanted to pop in to say what a nice OP that was. The puppy pictures were very cute, too.
Okay, I am LOVING having the office to myself today. It’s so nice and quiet in here and only one person has been in on business. I could get used to something like this!
I should finish eating and get my afternoon reports done. Later folks!
We get Friday and next Monday off, so there are lots of people on vacation this week and next week, so it’s quiet. The downside is slower response times, but hey, it’s summer. Last week was totally crazy. I worked 33.6 hours last week! The horror! It was pretty nuts around here, though. Reschedule everything! Wait, no, reschedule the rescheduled meetings, no, wait, we’re cancelling them altogether. Why didn’t we do that in the first place?
I’m switching some meds around and probably will switch some more after I see my other doctor next week. Plus, I need to get my labs done for my gastro appointment at the end of the month. Envy me.
I started knitting a lace shawl last weekend while I was in Sacramento. It’s my own design, so I have no idea what it’s going to look like when I’m finished. I’m using Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn, so at least the colors are pretty.
