dave - regarding people’s ability to lose weight - yes, people can lose weight.
Regarding why I felt the need to post my last 27 posts - both you and elf6c said that compairing an obese person’s abuse to that of a gay person, or a jewish person, or a black person, or a born-again christian person was offensive.
I was just pointing out that really, it wasn’t. Obese people suffer abuse just as profoundly as those in other groups and defending this abuse by saying “Well, they could lose weight” is as plainly absurd as saying “Well, Mary-Sue Born-Again Christian could just switch religions if she doesn’t want to be attacked.”
Both statements, while technically true, are offensive in the extreme - suggesting that either Joe-Big Guy, or Mary-Sue Born-Again should have to do ANYTHING to avoid abuse is totally rediculous.
catsix - you’ll notice that I’ve commented on the state of Keith’s car twice in this thread, both times saying that the woman who hit him was a jerk, and both times hopeing that his own car is fixed quickly, so I’ll just assume you weren’t addressing your comments at me.
11811 - are you really this much of a moron, or do you just play one on TV?
A.This guy likes making descrpitve disses at anyone who hits his car, such as “Pice of shit snoop doggy dogg lookin…” and “Fat obese bitch.”
B.That being said, he didn’t say anything to their faces, otherwise he might have got 1.)A cap in his ass or 2.)Sat on,crushed and devowered. So no harm, no foul.
C.Now what would be cool if if someone who looks exactly like him, hits his mustang…love to see the descriptive adjectives there…
By “diet”, presumably they mean a temporary reduction in calorific intake. In which case, could anyone believe otherwise?
This does not mean that obese people are stuck being obese, it means “dieting” isn’t going to help in the long run. What is required is a lifestyle change.
I see you concede this below, BUT, why the hell would you post such an obvious strawman in the first place? It undermines any real arguments you may have.
How on earth can it have gone off thread in the OP. Think about it, the thread title says what the OP contains. No way can you argue that it went off the subject.
You can assume what you want. The way I read your posts with all the ‘Sorry about your car, but you’re a sizeist.’ messages indicated to me that you aren’t really sorry his car was damaged. It read a lot more like the way people just mutter ‘I’m sorry.’ without actually meaning it.
Your posts in this thread have come off like you’re a member of the ‘I’m offended on behalf of ________’ club. Is it possible for you to just not open threads that have ‘fat’ in the title? Let the guy rant however he chooses when he’s upset about his brand new car being damaged by some fucknugget. If he wants to point out that it was a 400 lb slovenly fucknugget, big deal. That fucknugget earned it by being the kind of shit stain that would run into someone else’s car and then just take off.
Or do you think he’d be in here ranting about her if she hadn’t committed a hit and run?
LOL, why did I see a relatively innocuous rant with “fat” in the thread title and immediately know what the FOUR pages of replies were going to center around?? Perhaps because the Fat Person’s Liberation Army did the same thing to one of my rants a few months back.
Jeez, some people really have a chip on their shoulders about this. Really, no matter how silly the whole thing is, it’s probably better to tread lightly around this board with the “fat” remarks just because it isn’t worth the hassle of fending off the brigade of the easily-offended.
Anyway, I had a bump on my new truck that was a souvenir from parking at the movies, somebody must have bumped it trying to park and then just went elsewhere so I couldn’t tell whose car had done the bumping. Sheet metal work is expensive, dents cost $$$ to fix, so I extend my sympathies.
I was done with this stupid thread long ago - I really had nothing more to say, think that Keith is probably a swell guy, and was just pointing out that his choice of insult was somewhat insensitve to a whole group of people who HADN"T hit his car.
And suddenly, I’m attacked for being “offensive” because I think it’s really shitty to be mean to people for lame-o reasons be it size, shape, color or preference of fuck buddy. I was defending myself. I’m done now.
The white clue phone is ringing. I suggest you answer it and get one.
I stand by what I wrote in my OP and would not change it for the world, but really, people…this is supposed to be the Pit? Where you do express yourself in extreme ways and try not to censor youself? What the hell is with this constant hi-jacking of threads by people with obscure agendas and axes to grind? (Not referring to Alice; she has stated her feelings in a rational and admirable manner, even if I don’t necessarily agree)
There’s been wayyyy too much analysis and interpretation of my post. It’s a RANT. Trying to find underlying “sizeist” hatred or phobia of overweight people is looking for something that isn’t there. It’s extreme because I do in fact hate this fucking person who did this to my car, and if I had a chance to speak to her face, would no doubt use every ounce of venom in my feelings to make her feel like the substandard human she is. And she’s substandard because of her ACTIONS, not because of her appearance…but when you’re the type of person who’s willing to fuck other people with impunity, well, all rules concerning proper discourse are off.
If she were thin but pimply-faced, no doubt my OP title would have been “The Zit-Faced Moronic Bitch Who…”
If it had been a older man who was balding, of course the title would have been “The Bald-Headed Moronic Fucker Who…”
See how it works? There’s no anti-fat agenda here. I personally have friends who are in fact fat.
I do want to apologize for one thing, though, and that is the way I let Mockingbird drag me down to her level by trading insults. Sorry to all, I am truly better than that. If she chooses to go on with her entries, I will not respond to them in any manner.
The 5% success rate is pretty standard across all programs with the exception of the Atkins diet. I will see if I can find other sources of this information for you.
Meanwhile, you have presented nothing that supports a different percentage.
In my post as I had originally composed it and thought that I had posted, I made the statement that I thought the report reconciled our viewpoints.
Again, if you are correct that it is a matter of will power, how do you answer the following questions: Do you think that people in general lose their will power as they grow older? Do pregnant women lose their will power after the birth of the child? If weight is related to will power, then are we as a country losing all self-discipline? Finally, if you don’t mind sharing, why do you “choose” to remain fat?
Very few posts have been about the car, which by the way, I’m terribly sorry that the irresponsible bitch hit your car Keith.
The OP started the “derail” process himself by focussing on how horribly obese and skanky the driver AND her kids were, and how closely that mustrelate to why perpetrated a hit and run in the first place. He wanted to rant about an inconsiderate bitch who hit his brand new car, what he got was another anti fat-bashing thread BECAUSE of his own words.
"Because eating is a powerful, primal drive, one that trumps willpower or the desire to be thin in people genetically predisposed to obesity, argues Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, head of the laboratory of molecular genetics at Rockefeller University in New York City.
"The feeling of hunger is intense and, if not as potent as the drive to breathe, is probably no less powerful than the drive to drink when one is thirsty," Friedman writes. "This is the feeling the obese must resist after they have lost a significant amount of weight."
Friedman’s article appears in the Feb. 7 issue of Science.
"Two articles in the March 20 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine show that mutations in the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) lead to uncontrolled overeating and to binge eating.
“It’s a great example of behavioral genetics,” says Dr. Michael Devlin, clinical co-director of the Eating Disorders Research Unit at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York City. "This gene influences behavior. We tend to think in terms of how biology [and] your metabolism are influenced by genes, but behavior doesn’t seem like it should be. This seems to be a clear example."
Scientists have long known that, **along with diet and exercise, genes contribute to the current epidemic of obesity. In fact, some 50 percent to 90 percent of variation in body mass index among humans is considered to be heritable, say the study authors. So far, about 30 different mutations in MC4R have been linked to obesity."
“THURSDAY, April 17 (HealthScoutNews) – A cellular receptor that controls obesity has been identified by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California.”
“FRIDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthScoutNews) – New findings on how fat cells duplicate themselves as a survival mechanism for times when food is scarce may help scientists understand and tackle obesity.”
This looks hopeful:D:
"THURSDAY, Jan. 23 (HealthScoutNews) – A mouse experiment raises the tantalizing prospect of fulfilling every glutton’s dream – eating all you want without gaining weight and being healthier to boot.
In the experiment, scientists at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston created a strain of mice without one specific gene, which codes for insulin receptors in the fat cells. These FIRKO (fat-specific insulin receptor knockout) mice ate all they wanted – indeed, they were stimulated to eat more than they wanted – and did not gain weight, says a report in the Jan. 24 issue of Science."
I never could find back up for the 5% figure that I gave you on keeping the weight off. All I can tell you is that he is a quite reputable and well-known surgeon in the city (known for its medical center) where I live. He has been doing bariatric surgery only in the last few years of his career. He is now retired. The physician that referred me to him is the Chief of Staff at a large Medical Center (more than one hospital).
I’m not going to argue it here further. If these articles don’t open your minds a little on this subject, I don’t think any other facts will.
You guys – yeah, you with the kilt – go enjoy your pizzas and continue to discuss life style changes, lots of veggies and workouts if you must. I’m the one who lost 150 pounds five years go.
I return you now to the young man’s rant about the jerk who hit his car.
(Yes, I will read your replies, against my better judgment.)
Indeed, … obviously American weight problems are utterly a matter of it being impossible for Americans to lose weight. Funny not such a problem outre-mere. All in those unique American genes.
Just for your own personal records, Keith, I would have had similar words for you had I not gotten here a touch late.
I don’t think I’m anything approaching overweight, but let’s have you be the judge of that. There’s a picture of me on my website and another two [url"http://geocities.com/sdpeoplepages/iampunha.html"]here. They are a few years old but fairly accurate with respect to my current appearance.
Keith, since you seem to be suffering from the same delusion that others have been suffering from for a while now, let’s clarify a few things:
You are allowed to rant;
You are not granted immunity in your rant.
Or did you miss the other approximately 50 thousand rants before you where people ranted and were flamed back for what they said? If you want to rant free of criticism, get a journal.
Alice (who I generally agree with when I see your posts),
This wasn’t meant as a swipe at you. Sorry if it came off that way. I do think that conferring on ourselves the privilege to dislike people because they fail to meet some objective criteria for looks is in the same category as sizism, assuming there is some generally agreed-upon definition of beautiful and ugly.
I should like to think that the “agenda” to not have people subjected to irrelevant insults based upon their personal conditions as opposed to their inappropriate behavior is not so obscure. And if people have axes to grind on this particular topic it is because they have seen that such occurs far too often for them to stomach any further – even in the Pit.
All rules concerning proper discourse are off? Call off all logic and any modicum of decency because you’re angry, is that you’re suggesting? So are we to assume, then, that had the woman been black rather than fat it would’ve been completely fair – by your standards – for her to have been a nigger bitch, just because it was a rant?
So why the need to make disparaging remarks about the passenger and her weight? The passenger had nothing to do with the driver’s behavior, she was an innocent bystander whose behavior and actions with regard to you were neutral, at the very least. But you felt completely justified in making a dig about her fatness as well.
That’s where you really crossed the line, IMO. I can understand being outraged at the driver and going off the hook about her. When a jackass ran a stop sign and did several thousand dollars worth of damage to my brand new car a few years ago, I made several pointed comments about his obvious and distressing sight-impairment and I did so at a high rate of volume and to his face. But I didn’t say a word to or about his wife/girlfriend who was riding along, and when I was sharing the story later, I didn’t go out of my way to disparage her, because she had nothing to do with it.
It’s very hard to believe that you weren’t enjoying throwing around the fat insults when you went after the (presumed) daughter. It throws a cloud of suspicion over your motives and your failure to address this point even though its been raised at least twice in this thread makes me wonder all the more.
I’m sorry, I’m calling this as I see it. You were wronged, undoubtedly, but you’ve gone too far in your response.
This isn’t about being politically correct or grinding axes or promoting agendas. This is about calling people on their behavior – and your behavior has crossed a line too.
I have something to add that may not be very popular. Here goes;
The women was very large. Had another very large person as a passenger. Didnt seem to check her mirrors or blind spot. I see someone who is very LAZY. Also someone who just doesnt CARE in general. You can tell alot from someones appearence. There are probably more lazy people that are fat than not. There are probably more fat, lazy people that wont bother to roll their head to check the blind spot than not. So, the fact that she was fat may have more to do with this situation than many are willing to believe.
The CARE issue. She hangs with other fat, lazy people who dont particularily care about their health or appearance. Proof of this attitude was the fact that she didnt stop.
I realize that I am generalizing, hence the use of the adverbs may and probably.
But think about this, sometimes generalizations are dead nuts right on. Thats how they became generalizations. I am not saying that Lazy people are fat, or that fat people are lazy. Or that either dont care. I`m saying that in this case it appears that the stars have lined up and you got hit by someone representing the group of people that cause us to generalize.
I feel bad that your car got hit. I also feel bad that you got attacked by members here who ripped you for calling the spade a spade.
A: i want you to know that hear you. And you are correct, other people, people with whom I am generally agreeing in this thread, are not hearing you.
B: The reason they are not hearing you is because your argument, which is valid and technically true, as far as it goes, is usually presented as part of a larger argument that it is actually ok to be cruel to fat people because their condition is changable. I understand you are not, but we all know how sometimes we hear what we expect to hear.
C: It is technically true that being fat is a changable condition for most people, however, that fact is usually presented by people who wish to use it as justification for judgment as something which is simple. “Gee, just stop eating and exercise.” is offered as a cure as though it were no more challenging or complex than curing one’s bad breath by brushing one’s teeth, and that is neither true or fair, as I am confident you well know.
Because that doesn’t vent anger as effectively as the way the OP said things?
When you’re driving a nail and you wail your thumb with full force, do you say ‘Oh darnit’ or is it more like a litany of four letter words?
OP did what made him feel better about the damage to his car and the criminal bitch who did it. He apparently had a bit of bile to get out. If it’d help him to call her a pig-fucking shit eater, so what?
