The forums you post to?

If asked, I’d have described myself as a GQ sort who occasionally dabbled in the “silly” forums such as MPSIMS. GQ remains what draws me here, but I do socialize a bit - sniff - great perfume, dear - am I in love now?

So I took a look at my postings for the last month. What I came up with is as follows:

IMHO - 38.3%
GQ - 32.2%
MPSIMS - 24.8%
ATMB - 3.4%
GD - 1.3%

Obviously this is not all-encompassing, as I have posted in the other forums from time to time. But it is interesting for a person who sees themself as a GQ sort to realize that that has only occupied about a third of my time here, while IMHO has dominated. Ice Wolf’s got me dicked in ATMB, and it’s barely a saving grace to realize I spend less than a fourth of my time futzing around in the silly land of MPSIMS.

I guess I’m primarily Czarcasm’s problem.

So what forums dominate your SDMB life?

The ones I read, mostly: CS, IMHO, MPSIMS, GQ, The Pit. I probably pay the most attention to CS and MPSIMS.

Just going by my guts here…

from most posted in to least.

1st - MPSIMS

2nd - CS

3rd - BBQP

4th - GQ

5th - IMHO

6th - ATMB

7th - GD

8th - CSR

9th - CCC

Funny thing, I was thinking about this earlier today. (“I wonder how many people just stick to one or two forums and just dabble into the others occasionally, like I do…”)

Most of my time is spent in MPSIMS. I occasionally read/post to GQ. IMHO is making a big comeback and has occupied almost all of my SDMB time today. I’ve been to The Pit exactly once; I see enough trash talking on my basketball team. (Not to hijack, but that reminds me of a funny story. The head trash-talker on our team–we’ll call him “Daniel”–started last season on JV. The JV coach couldn’t stand him, so he sent him up to varsity. So “Daniel” spent the next few weeks telling us JV folk he was so much better than us because he was in varsity and we weren’t. Then the varsity coach decided he couldn’t stand Daniel either, so he sent him back down to JV. That shut Daniel up for a while.)

Personally, I try to stay out of Great Debates. I left one group when the intellectual (and, worse, the pseudo-intellectual) chatter overwhelmed the fun content. So they can have their fun in GD, and I’ll wait for it to fall over into the Pit.

In order:

  1. Great Debates
  2. The BBQ Pit
  3. Cafe Society
  4. IMHO
  5. General Questions

My list:

  1. GQ
  2. IMHO
  3. MPSIMS
  4. Cafe Society

Dont ever remember posting to GD and BBQ Pit.

I’m starting to think that the “Board Distribution” percentages will be notably different for those with extremely high post counts (like the OP, Ringo, with almost 10,000 posts!) and those of us who don’t have the time to participate to such a high degree.

Myself (with only 300 posts), I have gotten into the habit of checking on four forums. Since I don’t always check them in a timely fashion, some threads which I may have posted to if it were sooner go un-contributed to.

The first forum I check is always GQ. This is what interests me most (or at least sometimes covers topics which interest me most) and usually when I have actually deigned to start a thread to retrieve some information from the Informed Masses, GQ is the appropriate forum. If someone is asking a question I happen to have some insight into, I will generally offer a contribution.

Second is Cafe Society. I see a lot of movies and watch TV, so I check out threads that will add something to my enjoyment of certain movies or shows. For example, I read all 7 pages of the Matrix: Reloaded thread to try to get a better understanding of WTF that was all about, and read the 24 thread every week. When a thread asks something I can add without just repeating others, I will chime in here as well.

Third is Great Debates. Actually, I started checking this forum when a GQ thread got bumped there, and I wanted to keep track of the posts in that thread. Then once or twice I was actually interested in hearing both sides of a particular issue. I tried posting there a couple of times, but I find it a very frustrating experience. I now realize that you are not going to change anybody’s mind no matter how brilliant or incisive your comments are or how irrefutable your logic is. I now only bother on a particular issue or two, where I feel the OP is genuinely interested in deciding an issue, and therefore may listen to reason. I kind of feel it is my duty to post in this instance, as most other posters are emotionally unable to think logically about any other viewpoint than there own extremist position. Although I’m sure the vast majority do not share their extremist position, those who are not extremist do not bother to post. I’ll not mention the subject, so as not to generate any debate in this forum!

Lastly, I check IMHO. Again, I first started checking this forum when a thread was moved here, but I find it interesting enough to keep checking back.

I just don’t have the time to read more forums than this. Another thread I did read once was bumped to the About This Message Board forum and I checked back for that thread, but just didn’t have the time (or inclination, really) to keep checking it. Never once looked in (or posted, obviously) to the Pit. Maybe I’m missing some great entertainment, but it just doesn’t interest me.

  1. IMHO
  2. The Pit
  3. Cafe Society

Occasional MPSIMS, if I’m really bored.

I never post in IMHO.

Oh, wait …

IMHO and MPSIMS are the ones I post in the most. CS comes next, followed by the Pit. I only post in GQ occasionally, as I don’t usually have answers for these posts off the top of my head. At most I will either offer an anecdotal post or point to a cite. I rarely post in ATMB and I’ve never posted to either of the forums for Cecil’s Columns or Staff Reports. Lastly, I never even read, much less post in GD.
