Alright, I admit it: I’m a music snob. Now granted, I used to be much worse and although I never descended down the nefarious snob-path of “if no one’s ever heard of it, it must be good” or, conversely, “if its popular, it sucks,” I still know I qualify as a music snob. In other words, I’m sure I’m right about the quality of any given song, band, or record. It’s horrible, but its true. I’m coming to terms with it. I wouldn’t dream of ruining someone else’s joy, of course. If you love Hoobastank its possible we will never enjoy a slow dance and I’m okay with that. But I will no longer be berating your love like I did when I was younger and a much bigger ass.
Having fully embraced (ok, relucatantly admitted) my snobbery, I feel strangely liberated. I feel like using this snobbery for the powers of good, not evil. How so, you might ask? Why, The Great SDMB Music Exchange, of course. Here’s the idea:
First, get a group of like-minded music lovers together on the Dope. Snobbery is not a precondition but the idea is to get people who love and listen oodles of music involved. We introduce ourselves, and, through the magic of some sort of random number generator, we’ll become pseudo-music-pen-pals. Each Doper will be in charge of making a mix CD or two which is filled with whatever they deem appropriate, either their absolute favorite songs or artists they think should have a wider appeal and want to spread around or, really, whatever floats your boat, so long as its a full and proper CD.
At this point, the question is: how do we share? There’s YouSendIt type packaging programs, there’s the postal service. I want to try and make who receives what largely random but beyond that, I’m unsure what seems easier. This is more a general idea than a completely streamlined one, so any suggestions as to how to make this run smoothly or how to make it work better would be definitely appreciated. For now: would anyone be interested? And, obviously: what logistical improvements might you suggest (assuming what I proposed contained anything that could be vaguely construed as logistical)?
