Go to User CP/Edit Options and enable “Use Invisible Mode”, then click Save Changes.
The green icon will no longer appear below your name. It will instead be red at all times, whether you’re online or offline.

To be specific, go to:
Click on the User CP hyperlink in the blue band.
Then click on “Edit Options” in the list on the left hand side.
Then put a check in the box that says “Use Invisible Mode.” It’s the first thing you come to in the list on the right hand side.
Then go to the bottom of the page and hit the “Save Changes” button.
At that point the light icon by your name will turn red. And stay that way.

Either I’m a complete doofus, and I’m just missing it, or that checkbox, which I remember too, is no longer there for regular members – which is the point of the complaint.
Can you please check this again, using a regular member type login?

When the Board upgraded in around 2004, for some reason Charter Members(and perhaps some other class) appear to have had this option deleted from their CP control options. This comes up periodically, and apparently it has never been fixed. Not being a tech type, I don’t have a clue as to the problems with fixing it.
So, everyone is correct here. There IS a problem. You’re not crazy.

Not true. The board automatically logs you out after some predetermined period of inactivity–I believe it’s set for ten or fifteen minutes. You never see this because any time you load a page, your SDMB cookie logs you back in. The rest of us see you offline if you’ve been inactive long enough.

That explains why sometimes people I think are offline are still able to answer me right away.
Also I’m another one who stays logged in all the time and I’m glad to learn that I appear to be gone after a while. I’ve sometimes felt that the green dot caused people to wonder/take-offense at the fact that I was online but not responding to their posts.
Other than that, I’ve got no problem with the green dot. It’s good sometimes to know if a person you want to interact with is logged in.
