**Scylla ** I don’t know how I missed this, but this was outstanding. I giggled like a little girl until tears ran down my face reading this.
When you are famous, will you still remember us, your friends in Doperville?

Humor at its finest.
And I think this is the most viewed thread here…
Wow.
Out-friggin-standing Scylla. I, too, seem to have missed this the first dozen times around. I trust you’ll enjoy your new career as a published author and remember to bless us with your brilliance every once in a while.
Guess what I just got in the mail? After hearing that Scylla was going to be published, I emailed Liz Meek, who is the editor of Aerostat, the British ballooning magazine in which “The horror of blimps” was to appear. I asked how to buy one, and offered to pay for postage of course. Next day I got an email back and she said she was just going to post one to me for free! I had no idea when the story would appear.
Anyhoo, I got the magazine today! Only a week from when I first emailed! God Save the Queen and all that, the British are great! And so, especially, is Liz Meek!!!
Scylla , I know your real name now. BWAHAHAHAHAHA! And that little drawing of you, in the illustration, is that from life?
There were a few very slight amendments to the post as printed, but the only really noticable one is that the blimp is not named as Airship Earth. It’s titled “Things That Got Blimp in the Night” and the tag line say that “attention was brought to the following tale by some American balloonists who spotted it on the interestingly name Straight Dope Message Board. Enjoy!” And there is a link to the Straight Dope printed at the end of the article.
I got my copy, as well. Damn Baker, if I had known they were going to give them away for free, I would have negotiated for more than a comp copy. Also, it’s a high quality magazine isn’t it.
Well, I guess having brought laughter to souls across the world, I am rich in ways that money could never equal. Though a Porsche 911 Carerra 4 would be nice.
I’m sorry to hear that. now I’m going to have to hunt you down like the dog you are.
I’ve had more flattering depictions.
Actually, I’m not a dog, I’m a bitch.
You crack me up!
Seriously. I nearly wet my pants.
Let us know when you write a book so we can all run out and buy it.
Oh my word. THAT is hilarious.
Note to self: Never, EVER, open a Scylla thread again while eating oatmeal.
Do you know how much it hurts to laugh OATMEAL
…out your nose?
Dammit. I don’t know WHY it submitted before I was done typing. Stupid keyboard. <grumble>
Yeah! This is my all time favorite SDMB thread (among the ones I have read, obviously).
Ok, ok, so I KNOW it’s been a billion years since the story’s been posted, but … my Hat’s off to Scylla
I just found out this is the story’s “original” home, I’m one of the teaming millions who had it forwarded to me … and have just recently been drawn, helplessly, into the fold here as a fully-hooked SDMB’er.
I think everyone deserves to know when they’ve had an effect on the world, no matter how slight … so, Scylla … here’s some of what you have wrought.
Anyway, I read the famous blimp story, and my friends are still laughing their arses off at me. What did >>I<< see in the story?
“Wow! They have those blimps on SALE at Zanie!”
Several hours on the phone later, and my brother had an early birthday present on it’s way from the store in K.C., My father had his B-day present coming from the store in Phoenix, my friends C and L had timely and late (respectively) birthday presents headed to them from two different stores in LA and I had one on it’s way to me from one of the LA stores. ( … had to search them out a bit… ) Sometimes I am SUCH a Guy!!!
And what does my friend’s wife do? Sneaks the blimp into the guest room while I’m sleeping and launches it in my direction …
Ya know that security dwarf, the one reading the magazines …???
By the way, did anyone scope Jeannie Moos’ CNN report about the blimp race?
Thought of this string immediately.
July 19, 2003. After this I need to get started on the second half of “WILOTRWWBSE” thread, then there’s the “Missing Coworker” thread, and the “Evil Nazi Groundhog” too. After that, there should be time for a good portion of Rue’s threads, the “Cooler of Death” one, the great farting thread, and just about every other thread that I shunned and took off.
Nice story though, Scylla.
You have skill, you really do. well done made the whole family laugh.
Over 150,000 views…
Holy shit.
Great story, Scylla. I always enjoy your writing (teemings is 3 months behind!)
Huzzah and kudos and congratulations on getting published.
This is my first time here, and I followed a link posted in a Delphi Forum to get here. That’s the hardest I’ve laughed since my husband died last year and thank you so very much for that! It was definitely needed
It was truly great to see this again. Laughter is good medicine.
Oh. My. God. This is, hands down, the funniest thing I’ve read in a very long time. My cubicle neighbors are all wondering why I’m laughing so hysterically.
Seriously, this was perfectly brilliant. Thanks for a much-needed laugh.
Anyone got a Kleenex?
Yes, the blimp story is a classic.
Is Scylla still on the boards? I haven’t seen a post by him in months.
I was hoping the bump of this thread meant Scylla had returned.
