The "I am afraid to have children" argument gains strength

Why is everyone ignoring the bright side here?! We’re now living in a period when even a family’s very youngest members can bring in extra income!

You know, I was going to post here, but I’m laughing too hard.

(Not at what happened to the children, mind you; but at what has happened to the OP.)

[sub]Problem is, everyone took all the jokes I thought of. I suppose I could throw in a “Jesus loves the little children” reference, but that seems tacky.[/sub]

It’s only tacky if you don’t wash up afterwards.

I soooo share your bitter outrage over shallow message board blather.

It takes so much away from real, gritty Pit fodder. Y’know, stuff that everybody should wax wroth about–really, really relevant, directly personal shit like posters boinking coworkers, rude service workers or clueless idiots who can’t even order coffee correctly in lieu of “recreational” shit like unthinkable things happen to real people in real life?

The knee jerk RO-censoring thing is immensely valuable. Do carry on. I depend on pre-emptive thread shitters. It saves so much time and effort on my part, relying on steely-eyed message board warriors who intuitively know what might be worthy of discussion.

Have we gotten to declawing cats yet? Bad bosses? Don’t wanna get recreational or frivolous!

Current population of the US+Great Britain+Canada+Australia (per Google) = 415,740,502.
so if you have a child you have a 31/415,740,502 chance of them being molested.

Yup, time to get some more condoms, if you ask me.

Compared to those odds, a lotto ticket is a sure thing.

I *guess *the diffo, Veb, is that at least some of the other categories involve people pissing and whining about things that are any concern of theirs - rather than trawling the papers and the intarweb for things to be righteously offended about, and then screaming in rage because no-one joins in.

Also, at least some of those other threads entail people actually putting some effort into writing an OP, not just a link and saying “OMG this is terrible, I don’t know what to say!”.

Nice sarcasm, by the way. No doubt you’re ready and willing to be paid in the same coin?

31/415,740,502 seems too much like an actual number. I think it’s better if you say that there’s a

.00000000075% chance of your kid getting molested. If you fear odds like that, you should live underground to avoid those lightining strikes! Of course, then there’s always those flash flood dangers and vampire bats and …

The OP’s outrage at a horrible situation didn’t bug me; the OP’s assumption that if people don’t chime in on his RO-fest, they are okay with it, did. Because that position doesn’t make sense.

Big diff, my friend.

This is extremely sloppy logic. The odds of any particular US/UK/Aussie/Canadian kid being one of the 31 molested by these particular criminals in this particular timeframe would be the closest way to describe the number you calculate, but even that would be extremely inaccurate. Other factors, such as the vast majority of those children having never visited the UK, reduce the number of potential victims(driving up the ratio) significantly. To be generally applicable you also need to factor in the number of victims of other criminals, in various locations, and deal with the problem of how to calculate the numbers of children molested by family members. It’s still low, probably much less likely than the odds of developing cancer, but I don’t think we can banish fears of child molestation with such shoddy logic.

Enjoy,
Steven

“Good people need only stay silent for evil men to bang the pudding out of a roomful of anklebiters.” Or something like that.

yea.

really, what’s the point of the OP anyhow? sick fucks do sick fucking things. kinda what makes them sick fucks, ya know? are we supposed to argue that it isn’t a sick fucking thing? apparently, in order to satisfy the OP, we’re supposed to put into words (something they claim to be unable to do), our outrage that sick fucks do sick fucking things.

or perhaps we’re to stand in awe of the OP, who cares so very much about this situation, that they posted a link to the story on a message board!! wow.
spare fucking me. I work, every day, in an attempt to make the world a better place. I attempt to make a difference IRL, so that people aren’t further vicitmized. So, when some internet ijiot decides that because I don’t chime in on their RO thread, that means I support sick fucking folks doing sick fucking things, yea, they should expect to get called on it.

you care about the issue - do something more than post a goddam link on a fucking message board. There’s volunteer opportunities, charities, any number of ways to actually really make a difference.

and, at the very fucking least, if you absolutely will burst and die if you don’t post about it, do a little more than post the link and sob about how words fail you.

Okay, fine…I’ll ask my husband if we can move to Massachusetts and have a plural marriage…

Steven you are correct of course, but it was late, I was on my second scotch, and it was the best I could do quickly and in my condition. It does illustrate that 31 out of over 415 million people is not exactly a perv around every corner.
It was also to poke fun at the OP’s RO.

That sounds like it should be his permanent title, when he is knighted.

If you’re going to not have children because something terrible might happen to them, better not to have them because they might die in a car crash (more than 2500 children died that way in 2003 in the US) or because they might die of flu (about 100 children each year in the US). Pedophilia is a terrible thing, but you do need to keep the risk in perspective.

Chill, dude. I’m even one of your fellow RO posters - I will make Pit posts when something in the news pisses me off that I feel the need to comment on it.

But for fuck’s sake, give some meat to your fucking OP - tell us what’s bad about the link. Give us some of your thinking. If you can’t be bothered to express yourself when you’re trying to solicit a response, why the fuck should we be obligated to do more than shake our heads, if we bother to read the OP at all?
Yes breaking up a child-pornography ring is a good thing, and it’s horrible that it happened to these 31 kids. But, it’s also a number that’s not one that people relate to easily. Because of the size of the sample, and the sparsity of the story there’s no hook, no focus for people to get mad AT. How do you get mad at 700 people? I don’t know how to do it. Disgusted with them, and hoping they’ll end up properly punished? Sure. But hating them? I just can’t hate an amorpheus group like that.

If you want to get upset about child prostitution, this story is one that’s got more of a personal aspect to it. There are only about four players, the mother, boyfriend and the two girls. One of whom has been so effed up with what’s going on she won’t cooperate with the authorities. That’s a situation that I can, if not understand, at least encompass. You’re trying to generate a personal response while shouting that “The Sudan is a catastrophe!” It’s true, and it’s horrible, but it’s not a personal story.
As someone who wishes to continue to have the freedom to Pit stories that piss me off, what are called Recreational Outrage or RO, here on the Dope, try following this model for your OP and title.

I could not possibly care less whether people agree with each other in the Pit. Or anywhere else, for that matter, but it’s particularly silly in the Pit.

So be offended as much as you want, over whatever you want. Knock yourselves out. I’m just fairly tired of the latest fad, namely self-appointed message board heavies who decide what anger is merely recreational. That crap fest is particulary ridiculous given the endless supply of Pit threads on geuninely frivolous, personal shit.

If an OP is poorly written, nothing much more than a link, that’s fine. Good point. It deserves some scorn for sloppiness. But it’s gotten trendy to shit all over threads based on actual news accounts, and that little fad has become ridiculous in turn. Though there are unintentionally funny aspects. Now posters are rushing to be offended because the mere existence of so-called RO threads seemingly imply personal indifference and moral turpitude.

For all those deeply angered and offended…oh well. Your decision. Frankly it’s just more message board silliness. I’ve often found Pit discussions on topical matters much meatier than many in GD but that just IMO.

Soooo… you take it to the next level, Veb, and sit in judgement over people who sit in judgement over people who sit in judgement over vile shit they’ve seen on the news. Well, in that case I reserve the right to sit in judgement over people who judge the worth of counter-Pittings of lame pittings - and if you rate this just more message board silliness, you know how much your esteemed presence will be missed. Since you’re just posting in your private capacity and all.

Deeply angered and offended? Naah. You ain’t all that.

So you’re outraged about the outrage about the outrage threads?

I would find that outrageous, but— someone has to step in and stop this endless recursion.

Mods have always posted in a private capacity so nothing’s changed that way since I retired.

And I don’t mind calling posters out for lame Pittings. Never did and actually rather enjoyed shutting down lame-ass, careless threads. It would just be nice if lameness measurement were applied, oh I dunno, a little more consistently.

The RO schtick is overused, IMO, and increasingly tedious. Posters shouldn’t have to apologize for posting about issues in the news, much less face knee-jerk ridicule on the basis that they probably don’t apply personally to most posters. Most message board fodder won’t, but that sure as hell includes the majority of threads active in the Pit at any given time. Posters’ flames about in-laws, rotten neighbors, cat declawing, rude customers/service folk, yadda yadda could just as easily qualify as ‘recreational’ venting.

Sorry, no outrage here. At the worst I may muster up mild irritation though.

And sorry to post and run but gotta get to bed, and probably won’t be on-line much for the next few days due to work demands. Don’t really have anything to add but will try to read responses, if any.
