The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale - Soup 2.0?

I notice that the next six will all hit on the same date. I guess maybe the weekly thing was not working too well.

I’m not sure how many people even realize Netflix has some weekly shows. I bet the ratings(streams) of episode 1 were huge, but people forgot it had more and the screenings dropped.

I’m not watching the show although I did watch The Soup on E! and the whole point was that the show commented on the events and programs from that week. (It actually suffered some when they moved it to Wednesdays.) So I’m not sure how they’re going to do if they release the new episodes all at once.

I wonder how many people who watch it are like me. I essentially never watch any of the shows he riffs on, but I still get a laugh at him riffing on them. I’m still wondering how many different interpretations of the title “Vanderpump Rules” he can come up with, even though I didn’t actually know that was a show until I saw him talking about it.

So when the show was aired vs. when the clips were aired makes no difference at all to me. He could be talking about episodes from years earlier*, and I wouldn’t care, so long as it was funny.

*And in fact, they made a point of that a couple of episodes ago, when he did a bit on a show from the 80s, I think it was. His routine doesn’t depend on timeliness, it depends on clueless people on video.

I think many of the viewers of The Soup were like that. My only exposure to many of these shows and many of these people was through that show. And some of the stuff featured was so obscure (Spanish-language programs, for example) that I’d never, ever watch it. But still, in my memory, it was a very topical show.

But even if you don’t watch the shows in question (which I also never did), the time delay still makes them stale, as other things have since happened that can be more funny. Plus a lot of what was in the Soup was kinda in the zeitgeist: it referenced things that other people were talking about, but extended them. It felt like “news about TV shows.”

It’s also just not a show that it makes sense to binge, as the formula gets old quickly. I got a week behind, and I intentionally stayed a week behind from then on, because watching two at once would be too much. I noticed that they weren’t really as topical feeling as the Soup was, which makes sense in the post Tivo and on-demand world.

It’s back on next Sunday.

This time, they pre-recorded all of them, so they won’t be topical or reference any current show airings.

Still, it should be cool.

I’m gonna give it a shot, but I’m still going to space them out–one week at a time.

I haven’t seen any of them yet. I was a fan of all versions of “Talk Soup,” but especially “THE Soup.” I am going to try to binge it.
