BTW, it did, at the time, make sense to assume homosexuality was a mental illness–because very few normal people ever came out. The only people the psychologists knew were homosexual were the ones with mental problems. Furthermore, being a homosexual and having to hide it creates its own set of mental problems. It makes sense to not yet realize that it was the hiding that was causing the problem.
And the declassification wasn’t political either, despite what some social conservatives would want you to believe. Over time, psychologists discovered that homosexuals could lead happy and productive lives without being “cured.” And they were of no danger to anyone else in society. Since a mental illness is defined as a mental issue that causes the opposite of the above without treatment, homosexuality clearly did not fit the criteria.
Few “normal people”?? The out gays of recent era were often creative geniuses: Capote, Warhol, Tennessee Williams, Billie Holiday… Homosexuality isn’t a recent trend, and out homos were all the rage in Greece during a certain area. And in Thailand… (not going to list current cultural or historical examples of gay acceptance, because the backlash against homosexuality was and continues to be a Christian-driven trend, and not an ongoing, worldwide POV)
Your opinion about why homosexuality was removed from the DSM is an interesting (offensive) angle, but if you will do a little research the decision is well documented by professionals.
