The Last of Us Finale Makes a Disastrous Choice
The first season ends by nearly wrecking everything the show has accomplished.
That’s where I remember her from!
Which one?
Too gloomy, with a future world which wasn’t worth saving, and with yet another Cannibal Commune or whatever to look forward to, I started watching this show last week and made it to episode 4 before getting on with life and putting this one behind me.
In short:
I ain’t watching all that
I’m happy for u tho
Or sorry that happened.
(Really love the “details” code ([ details=text ] [ / Details]), btw.)
Yeah my wife said immediately that this was a flashback and that was going to be Ellie’s mother because she looked like Ellie. We assumed they cast her for that reason but I found out later she was the voice and this was essentially a cameo. It’s a funny coincidence.
This was great television, if I had any complaints it would be the occasional videogameyness of it (each episode feeling like a separate level, the “boss” mushroom, Joel’s recovery after consuming a “health potion”, the Rambo sequence at the end of this episode). Given the source material that feels somewhat petty though.
Super happy with both leads. Some people were shitting on Bella Ramsey because she doesn’t look like game Ellie (who is also conventionally attractive) …
The show could be thrown off balance in an unpleasant way if viewers were constantly thinking ‘so, will Joel and Ellie get together?’ Having Ellie played by a performer who openly does not identify as heterosexual (or even as female, I believe) helps thwart that common reaction to seeing a male and female together.
It’s smart, I think. It lets us concentrate on questions such as whether Joel is making decisions based on his informal adoption of Ellie, rather than on more rational grounds.
Anyway, I hope we don’t have too long a wait for Season 2.
Slate had an odd take on the finale. The writer really did not like the conclusion.
The Last of Us returns to its source material in a way that comes close to wrecking everything the show has accomplished.
…If Joel were really acting to save Ellie, he’d tell her what he’d done, rather than concocting a lie about the procedure not working and the hospital being attacked by raiders. He’s just concerned about protecting his emotional attachment to Ellie, which the show may present as morally gray but also sanctifies by scoring his rampage with mournful cello music.
Sure, Joel makes a questionable choice at the end (a few questionable choices, in fact). But that’s what makes it stand out from other games/shows in the genre. It allows viewers to debate, was it the right choice? Is Joe a good guy or bad guy?
If the goal of the show was to portray Joel as the savior of humanity, then you could argue the ending “ruined everything the show has accomplished.” But that wasn’t the point at all. Joel was a man wrestling with some demons at the start, and he still is.

…it was impressive for me because Ashley Johnson does not look at all like Bella Ramsey at all IMHO. But the moment I saw her here in the show I was like “woah. THAT’S ELLIE’S MOTHER.” Amazing job by the actor, the hair and make up team, and the production in general.
Don’t read ahead if you haven’t seen the finale and/or don’t know how the first game ends. SPOILERS
Here’s a video of a prank they played on Troy Baker while they motion-captured the scene in the hospital. Its all rather brilliant.
As Joel was running around in my head I couldn’t help but think “DIE”…“DIE”…DIIIEEEEEE!!!" every time he shot someone. And as he rescued Ellie, my brain sang to me:
“YOUR BRAIN…IS WORTH MORE…ALIIIIIIVE!!!”
Utterly ruined the scene for me in just the best way.
That was outstanding. I have huge respect for everyone on that set for keeping it together. Especially Troy. And maybe doubly so for Ashley. I would have just wet myself from laughing.
That article is ridiculous.

Uh, it’s pretty clearly a father/daughter relationship. The characters are supposed to be what, 45 and 14? I really hope no one is thinking that, regardless of Bella’s orientation.
I agree that Joel didn’t just do it for Ellie, it absolutely was for himself. In fact, you could argue his relationship to Ellie is somewhat toxic; he’ putting a lot on her. However, totally disagree that the music was sanctifying Joel’s actions. Definitely think it was shot and portrayed more on the negative side if anything.
Yeah I am pretty sure the show was not taking Joel’s side here.
Well they certainly didn’t show him executing people who had already surrendered to show how heroic he was being.
Can we at least agree that the Fireflies were idiots for escorting an extremely dangerous and potentially belligerent man out of a building at gunpoint, without binding his hands and covering his eyes?
Everything the Fireflies did was stupid, really stupid.
The leader should have stalled Joel or even lied to him. Joel should have been secured if they were going to tell him everything. The 2 bozos escorting him from far too close were dumber than dumb.
Marlene knows Joel as a heartless mercenary who saw Ellie as nothing more than cargo. So it’s somewhat understandable that her guard wasn’t up initially. But yeah, once it became clear that he cared, they were all idiots.
Something I wondered about - if they were getting ready to cut or drill into Ellie’s head, wouldn’t “prepping for surgery” include shaving her head? If not the whole thing, at least the target area?
I don’t think they wanted her to know, or she would have known Joel was lying.
I can see arguments for both sides. Was it likely or possible they’d be able to get anything useful, let alone a vaccine, from one immune kid? No, not at all. Not to mention manufacturing it. Should Joel have let Ellie make her own choice? Probably. Assuming Marlene was right and they really could have created something from Ellie to save people, should she have been given the choice? I don’t know. Probably not. Lying to her was totally human, understandable, and wrong.
