The Law Library

What “laws” do you know of ? Humorous or real.

Murphy’s law
law of averages
law of diminishing returns
code of the hills

This worked wellon another board, so let’s see what we get here at SDMB.

There’s the law of conservation of dirt. In order for something to get clean, something else has to get dirty. However, it’s possible for everything to get dirty without anything getting clean.

Those are, respectively, the First and Second Law of Thermodirtnamics. The Third Law, of course, is that dirtiness spreads evenly, so that the Universe tends toward a condition of uniform dirtiness.

This can even be seen in some stars, the R and S groups I believe, which are cool enough to have carbon soot suspended in their photospheres. When you can get a sustained nuclear explosion dirty, that’s really taking it to extremes!

Sturgeon’s Law
Gaudere’s Law
Godwin’s Law
The butter-side-down rule

There’s the** New Toy Rule**: The Sharing Rule does not apply the same day a kid gets a birthday or holiday gift. On that day he/she can ignore pleas to share, and the gift can sit unplayed with while the kid plays with something else that’s new. By the next day all the new toys are old toys and nobody will fight over them.

Rule of nine (or casting out nines) (for math and numerology tricks)

Gresham’s Law: “Bad money drives good money out of circulation.”

Hofstadter’s Law: It always takes longer than you think, even when you allow for Hofstadter’s Law.

Cheops Law: Everything always takes longer and costs more.

O’Toole’s Corollary (to Murphy’s Law): There are two things I’ve seen under this head:

  1. If it just can’t go wrong, it will anyway.
  2. Murphy was an optomist.

Do razors count? There’s Occam’s Razor.

I have The Official Rules by Paul Dickson

My favorites two are,

and

Zymurgy’s First Law of Evolving Systems Dynamics: Once you open a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is to use a larger can.

That one bit me this week. They had a sale on my favorite storage shelving, bought them one at a time for years. I got a couple but wanted more. They were all gone, and I was informed it was a discontinued item and I can never get more to match.

Asimov’s 3 Laws of Robotics

I know most of the man laws. Pretty simple, really… just golden rules with “dude” in there somewhere.

Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics are certainly worth recalling, but don’t forget Arthur C. Clarke had some laws of his own (the first is my favorite): Clarke's three laws - Wikipedia
