The answer to both questions is, with a fair amount of violence.
They don’t have moderators with banhammers. Should an undesirable show up, they quickly shuffle him off into a holding forum with a female that never stops talking. Way worse than banning.

… I think the GiraffeBoard was in part a desire to recapture the original feeling of the Straight Dope from the days when we first escaped the auspices of AOL.
That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. The nice thing about an offshoot is that it’s low stakes, so you can just try stuff out. Some stuff worked, some totally sucked. No big deal. I had originally hoped that some of the vB features and forum ideas we tried out could be brought back over here, but that ended up being unrealistic. It’s still been a great experience, and I’m surprised and humbled that as many hilarious and charming people have stuck around for as long as they have. (They know who they are. The rest of you are fine too, I guess.)
I stumbled into a snark forum that criticizes Dopers by name and was . . . mildly horrified.

I find the snark threads to be interesting and sometimes hilarious. Not really mean spirited. And they are often discussing some thread that I haven’t bothered to follow on this board. I can’t spend the time to read everything here, usually only the ones that seem interesting at the time, and they often fade away.
But sometimes a thread I haven’t been following blows up into a more interesting discussion or a spat between posters. The Giraffe board snark is like a filter for finding those discussions.
Yeah, it is kind of mild, but we’re trying to ramp it up.
Honestly, if you get snarked over there, then there’s something in your game plan that’s uhm… special.
Also, since the snarkers are not anonymous to the snarkees, if one feels unfairly portrayed it’s trivially simple to go argue your case in person. Or to snark back. Which is not actually easy to do HERE due to the arcane rules that nobody really seems to comprehend completely.
That’s because it’s located on fine beachfront property in California and not in a Chicago alley.
And who wouldn’t want to go argue with a small army of Gladys Kravitzes? I mean what’s the big deal.

) but this is my reaction as well. Any time I’ve browsed there it just seems mean.
