The Many Flavors of Gatorade

Lemonade Gatorade is back on the shelves and it is the nectar of the gods as far as I’m concerned.

I used to be traditional lemon-lime man, but when lemonade came out I switched. Then lemonade mysteriously disappeared for several years, so I switched to orange.

The various blue flavors are in the middle of my list. Dead last is the red flavor; I think it’s supposed to be fruit punch. Fruit punch anything doesn’t taste good. What the hell is it?

I don’t touch the low-sugar or clear stuff but YMMV. Never tried the numbers other than G2, either.

I am not sure why I am posting this other than the fact that I am as giddy as a schoolgirl about the return of lemonade Gatorade.

You do not now of what you speak: red Gatorade is delicious, followed by Orange.

I was always a fan of lemon-lime, but I don’t think I disliked any of them. I have tried Prime though. I threw it up after about 15 miles on a bike ride and haven’t tried it since. It’s too thick and syrup-like.

Gatorade itself is just about too strong for me anymore though. I usually have to dilute it with water for bike rides now.

Blue is awesome. Just shows what you know.

They all taste about the same to me. I just drink the lower calorie G2 stuff, and only after a decent workout, so I pretty much just chug it with no regard to the flavor. I do have a slight preference to the more classic citrus-type flavors, as opposed to whatever weird names and colors they have today.

ETA: I was going to say, Blue is the one I actively avoid. What the hell is it supposed to be?

Lemonade is really good, but Riptide Rush is where it’s at.

The ice blue and ice purple flavors are great.

When sick: mix one half Gatorade and one half 7up. Perfect.

Water. Drink water. Why pay for Gatorade, which is mostly water, when plain old water will do. Yeah, yeah, I know about electrolytes. Depends on just how much you exercise, engage in sports, or sweat; but in general one needs only to hydrate with water before and after exercise. Of course if you’re addicted to a certain drink or certain flavor, well, have at it. Just saying.

I misspoke; G2 is the lo-cal version of the traditional Gatorade, which they now refer to as “Perform 02”. I only go for the traditional formulation but I enjoy it in all its diverse flavors (except red.)

I just visited the Gatorade website and must say I’ve never seen such a bunch of pseudoscientific marketing jibber-jabber. I just drink it as an everyday beverage because it’s sweet but not too sweet.

Here’s a hint for anyone and everyone:

  1. Go to your local market that is geared exclusively to the Latino community. Preferably the kind with a carniceria in the store. We’re talking hardcore Latino supermarket.

  2. Pick up a jug of Cucumber-Lime Gatorade. Pay for it.

  3. Drink.

  4. Be very, very happy.

That shit is AWESOME. Unlike most Gatorade, it actually tastes like the flavor it’s labled with; to wit, cucumber and limes. It is hella refreshing, and most white folks will never even know it exists.

My favorite was the old clear Lemon Ice. I don’t think they make it anymore, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the blue or purple one’s are basically the same thing rebranded.

Growing up when there were only a few flavors, it always struck me that Gatorade was nasty when you weren’t thirsty, but was the perfect thing when dehydrated. It was probably just because my mind just made an association between Gatorade and working hard, but whatever it was, it doesn’t seem to be the case with the new flavors

I thought you were gonna say Xtremo Mango, which is my favorite flavor.

As a loyal graduate of the University of Florida, I probably shouldn’t say this, but come on. It’s all just sugar water.

Tea and coffee are dirty water, soda is fizzy water and juice is … er, juicy water. What’s your point?

With SALT, goddammit. That’s what makes it Gatorade and not Kool-Aid!

I’m a big fan of G2 Fruit Punch and Grape, myself. I can’t drink the regular stuff at all (too sweet and heavy) but I love the G2.

I’d be curious to do some blind taste tests with gatorade. I’m not at all sure I could tell you the difference without the visual cue.

I could get a few - not necessarily the difference between red Powerade or Gatorade though.

I have a tub of blue Gatorade mix that I normally whip up at half strength. Mmmm.

My favorite was the tea flavored Gatorade they tried for a short time(in Texas anyway).
