The Most Maudlin Song Award goes to...

I had forgotten that Patches!! I remembered the one about the poor girl who killed herself, and her boyfriend was going to kill himself to join her.

Both of them are pretty bad, but when they came on the radio, I didn’t turn them off.

Last Kiss, by the Cavaliers

Last Kiss

What a great playlist this thread would make.

They weren’t edgy enough to please you?

I’d say Dave Barry never had a death in the family.

There should be a counterpart thread posted by those who think only "edgy " belongs in vocal music. And maybe they can clarify just how much sentiment means “saccharine tripe,” unless they just like tarring everything with the same brush. :frowning:

Yeah, 99% of this thread is just “sad songs”. Nothing wrong with sad songs.

Are you asking me to nominate “Who Wants to Live Forever?” Because that’s just mean.

This one was sung at the memorial for the victims of the Murragh Federal Building bombing. I saw one young mother(her daughter was the little girl in the firemans’ arms) bent over sobbing her heart out while this was sung.

Roses for Mama

My complaint is not about the kind of music, but rather about the disparaging commentary on such-and-such other kind. As if those posting were in favor of a monopoly.

I’m unclear. Your complaint is about people in the thread making disparaging remarks on what? And they are in favor of a monopoly of which?

Not being snarky, genuinely confused.

While Country Joe and the Fish’s most famous song I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag has a bummer of a title, and does reference the war, it’s mainly upbeat. OTOH, Here We Go Again is a seriously complete downer, mopey song.

Wow, four pages in and no one mentioned Gilbert O’Sullivan’s champion maudlin to depressing tune, Alone Again Naturally ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_P-v1BVQn8

A man singing about the woman who jilted him and his dead parents as he prepares to jump to his death.

I think its jaunty and upbeat melody saves it from maudlinicity, if I can make up a word.

I think the best way to put it is an analysis of Dave Barry’s comment on “Honey”: It would be better if the “Hell ’ s Angels” had taken her. To me that suggests brutal assault and murder. That may satisfy someone’s notion of “edgy” but to me it’s downright repulsive.

O.K. Get it. Sorta.

According to Wikipedia, Ted Nugent wanted to carry the monopoly concept even further: He wanted to buy out “Muzak” or “elevator music” specifically to get rid of it. Talk about bigotry. :frowning:

Ted Nugent is a crazy person who fucked his daughter and shit his pants to avoid service to his country. Everything he says and does is invalid.

It has been. Post 47.

naturally.
