The "My bumpy transition into adulthood" MMP - and how was yours?

Hurrah, it’s half past week! And today is beerverage day, and I am largely doing no work at all today. I have fire safety training for an hour at 10am then I have to be out of here by 1pm to go to the eye hospital, and after that it won’t be worth coming back in again so I’ll be going home. We have hot water again and my soaky bath beckons.

ETA: First on Three. Woot!

Happy Veteran’s Day!

And happy hump day - the week is half over, woo hoo. It’s a Federal holiday today, so I don’t have to go in to work. I’m still up and caffeinating, though, but the good thing is that I can go lay down and nap when I want to. LOL

I heard from my mother’s brother yesterday; his daughter (my cousin of course!) had seen another cousin over the weekend–my grandfather’s sister’s daughter. Believe it or not, my grandfather’s sister is still alive. She is 100 and will turn 101 in February. She lives in an adult retirement community and except for some memory problems is still in fairly good shape, for being 100 that is. That side of the family does have some long-lived folks. knocks on wood three times

Enjoy the day if you’re off; if not, at least it’s half gone, right?

Happy Veterans Day!

Off, caffeinated, off to work. hockey tonight.

Good morning, and thank you to all the veterans!

They finally got my software working last night, 15 minutes before quitting time. So I’m able to work on the fun stuff again!

I got the new Stephen King book yesterday, and it’s sucking me in very quickly. I sure would prefer to be reading it than here working! But I brought it and will read it at lunch. It must weigh about 20 pounds - another epic novel. Woo-hoo!

Have a good one, Mumpers!

Owwoowowwowwoowooowoowwwwoowwwwwwooowwwwwwwww!!!

I just went to spit out my gum and, in the absence of a tissue, I grabbed a Post-it. Except, when I when to spit the gum into the Post-it, I accidentally gave myself a paper cut, right on the underside of my nose!!! OWWWWW!!!

Home again, sick again. Garrumpphh. Glad my brother (who doesn’t read much) sent me a book he finished and thought I’d like - it made yesterday bearable.

Oww,** Dotty**, sorry for the paper cut. Paper cuts in odd places are the worst.

Hope you feel better soon, Fetch.

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes!

Up, but only because I want to get a bunch of stuff done and got virtually nothing done yesterday. This is part of being a grown-up, right?

Am finishing re-setting up my laptop. Hadn’t restored everything because I was watching Vista and making sure it wouldn’t freak out again. Seems OK.

Guess I should go find some breakfast.

Back later.

Mmmmm. Dunkin Donuts Boston Creme filled.

That is all.

Welcome to the MMP! You’re a lot braver than I was, althought the mom-part of me is shaking a finger at you for not finishing high school. tsk tsk…

I kinda sorta slept in - got up to let the dogs out, got back into bed… We’ve put up the bead board in the bathroom, and in a few minutes, I’m off to the dentist to get, um dented?? Just a cleaning today. Then home to do some more stuff in the bathroom.

Gotta run - appointment is at 1110…

MWAH!!!

Blurf[sup]10[/sup].

Caffeinated. Fat lot of good it’s doing. Had some trouble getting to sleep, but didn’t really get to sleep that late. Nevertheless I feel like crap. I’m having other free energy-drink-that-tastes-like-feet if only because I need the boost enough to put up with the footy flavour.

Is this called “Veterans Day” now? I always grew up with November 11th being called Remembrance Day. So … I guess, Happy Remembering the Veterans Day? Works for me.

Lunch approaches.

Premise # 1: Voice mail has become obsolete. I SEE your number and name on my caller ID, and Missed Calls list. If I didn’t answer, it either means I was too busy, unavailable or you have a blocked number - which I don’t pick up. So, when you leave me a voice mail that says “Hi, it’s Jeff, give me a call” That is a complete waste of my time!!! I listen to a voice mail that in essence tells me only that you called.

Wow, thanks for that, may I have my 30 seconds back?

Corollary to the above:

During said message, leaving me your phone number, knowing full damn well that I only have to bring up my missed calls, highlight your last call and hit the little green button, only makes you look like an imbecile. ESPECIALLY when you know that both our phones are programmed with the same address book from the Techies, so when I go to your name, it even tells me you called from your cell, as opposewd to your office, or home.

On the other hand, you ARE an elementary school principal, why in the world would I give you credit for any common sense in the first place, right?

Next: When I return your call not more than 90 seconds after you’ve made it, please have the courtesy to answer the fricking thing!

When I was a kid, it was called Armistice Day. Pick one…

That was the quickest dentist visit ever. 20 minutes. The hygienist congratulated me on my flossing. 'Cept I kinda don’t floss unless I’ve got something stuck. Good genetics - I once went something like 6 years without a cleaning, and all I had were two teensy cavities. Lucky me!

Since getting back, I flipped the mattress and made the bed, cut up the cardboard box that the shower walls came in, and made myself some pseudo-quesadillas. I put cheese between a couple of tortillas and nuked it. Then added a schmear of sour cream. Quick and easy. Once I finish snarfing it down, I’ll load the dishwasher and run the vacuum. By then, **FCD **and daughter should be home with yet another fish tank. Some guy was selling a 20 gallon tank with live rock and some fish and stuff for $30, so they drove down to get it. It’s going in the kids’ place.

Plans for the afternoon: Crown molding in the bathroom and priming/painting the molding that goes atop the wainscoting. And if there’s time, I may try to tile the floor. It’s only about 30 sq ft or so - a pretty small job. And if we can get the bathroom done before the weekend, I can paint the living room, so we’ll be ready for our new furniture when we get back from FL! YAY!

Is remodeling ever done? I’m thinking not…

Oddly enough, nobody else will ever sit in that cube. Unrelated to my moving to North Carolina, the company is evacuating the building before the lease is up and re-distributing everyone to other buildings in downtown SF.

Some groups are already gone - one quarter of my floor is completely bare. Nothimng left but a grid of dozens of worn patches in the carpet from years of abuse by chair wheels and shuffling feet.

One of my co-workers is a packrat. He’s got Leaning Towers of Papers at both ends of the desk, and a side table is completely covered in old newpapers. He could probably fill a whole shredder bin on his own. Then there’s the guy who sat next to me and moved away last year. A mainframe “graybeard” even though he was clean-shaven, this guy had a knack for making stacks of stuff structural. In reality, two stacks of binders with pages leaking out reached up to a shelf, also covered in binders. It looked like he’d engineered an arch to enshrine his gen-yew-ine IBM greenscreen terminal.

You know, eating the homemade croutons always seems like a good idea until you’ve done it. Then when the garlic breath kicks in, it’s already too late.

I’ll bet it’s a weird feeling to wander around your workplace, gotti. When are you and DH heading out?

My work pack-ratiness is all concealed in filing cabinets. I’ve tried to empty as I have time, but the concept of “having time” tends not to exist in my job.

At the moment, my home pack-ratiness is annoying me, so I’ve been chipping away at it. Slowly, but surely.

Forgot to tell you that the aquarium looks really cool, FCM.

I’ve been having an exciting time putting away clothes, doing more laundry and uploading pictures to flickr. Need to get outside to work in the garden at some point…

Back later.

gt - it’s looking cooler still, now that there’s some wildlife in there!

All righty, then. Dishwasher is just about done washing. Vacuuming is done. Monster spider plants that I brought in last week are up off the floor. I even installed the storm window in the garage door. I’ve still got to put the windows in the front storm doors, but it’s pouring and the windows are stored outside. I’ll do them this weekend.

Taking a little break to read my comics and Dear Abby. Man, I seem to be failing at “taking a day off.”

MBG, I have to disagree. I never call people on the basis of a missed call… if they don’t leave me a message, I’m going to assume that they either called by accident or because they wanted to chit-chat about something unimportant. Anyone who expects a call back better leave me a goddamn VM (and please, mention what it’s about so I can prioritize, kthx).

Ate too much leftover Chinese for lunch. Sleepy now.

Zzzzzzz.

And since I’m making rules for life today:

Lady With the Noisy Kids at Culver’s, either buy the brat his fries or take him home, but please for the love of Og, stop ignoring him and at least give him an answer so he’ll STFU!!!.

8 days til I see The Hubby!

It’s Veteran’s Day in the States, Mindy, and Remembrance Day up here. We were at play group and missed the moment of silence. It was a moment of loud instead.

I’m making oreo truffles for Mr. Lissar’s grandparents. I made caramel last night, but it didn’t cook quite long enough, and it’s too runny to roll into balls. I’m refrigerating it and will either add it to another batch of oreo treats (chocolate caramel!) or roll it, freeze, and then dip for soft caramel truffles. Votes?
