Since nobody has laid down any definite plans for Friday night (tonight  ), I suggest:
Mowie’s Cue
1200-something Toronto Road
Springfield, IL
It’s about a mile and a half south of the city on I-55.
Take I-55 to Exit 90: Toronto Road. Turn east from the off-ramp toward Hardee’s, Burger King, etc. You’ll see a little mini-mall on your left (the north side of Toronto Road). It’s called “Laketown Plaza” (I think). Mowie’s Cue is in that mini-mall.
It’s a nice, informal place with games & pool tables & such.
I might stop by.
I’m going to call UncleBeer on his cell phone (if I can find his number) to let him know.
I have to agree with this suggestion. Unless we can get a hotel shuttle to take us, I’m really not to happy with the idea of having to drive somewhere to get plastered, since then we have the whole drinking/driving issue. How about dinner someplace we can drive to, then back to the hotel for the bulk of the drinking?
Silo said the that place on Friday is a little over a mile from the hotel. Hell, we could walk it if we had to - that’s only a 20-30 minute walk (when sober :D). Of course, if it’s raining, we’re kind of screwed.
I’m going to be hit and miss today, gang, because the new Jeep’s in, and I have to do all the little annoying new car things today/this evening. VB (and I think Uncle Beer) has my cell number, and instructions to call me when you guys are ready to leave.
Mowie’s isn’t a bad idea, but if you don’t want to drink and drive, it’s not really an option. While rasta’s pretty close on the distance, Springfield’s layout is far more dependent on interstates than one would guess. It might only be a 20 or 30 minute walk, but that’s a half hour walk along I-55 and Illinois Route 4. There are several chain restaurants nearby, though, so dinner should not be a problem.
Falcon, you’d better bring LOTS of water if your gonna be dousing me for a simple little statement like THAT. Must remember to pack umbrella. Or maybe just bring lots of raincoats!
Wow. I’ve lived here for years and I’ve never heard about anybody being this excited about coming to Springfield.
I don’t know what my plans are for the weekend yet or when I’m free, but I am intrigued, and I wouldn’t want to miss a chance to see an actual Straight Doper in real life. If you see somebody wandering around with a dazed look on his face, looking for Dopers, it might be me.
Well, unless I hear anything different, by, say, 7, I’ll drive on out to Ye Olde Poole Halle.
Hopefully, I’ll see someone I recognize. If not, I’ll come back home and curl up in the fetal position or something. Just like every other Friday night…
I’ll be getting into town between 8 and 9pm with Jophiel. Most of the ChiDopers should know my last name (here’s a hint: it’s also the name of a Stooge), so anyone should be able to find us. I have Flyp’s, Unclebeer’s, and Dyno’s phone numbers as well.
We’ll probably get food on the road, so I’m not too concerned about dinner, but as far as going out to drink I say let’s not bother. There’s the whole drinking/driving thing and then the fact that I’ll have just driven four hours, PLUS tomorrow is going to be a spendy night - I don’t want to blow all my cash on the first day. Doesn’t the Courtyard have a bar, anyway?
By the way, does anyone know if Omni is showing up?
I finally got in to Springfield at 11:30 PM, on a standby out of O’Hare. My flight from Dulles was supposed to depart at 2:00 PM, and arrive at O’Hare at 3:00 PM, w/ a 1 1/2 hr. layover until my crop-duster took off for Springfield.
Instead, I get an 1 1/2 hr. delay in Dulles 'cause of crappy weather in Chicago, miss my connection, get stand-by on a 7:30 PM flight, get delayed until 10:00 PM…but, I finally got here. Room 229. After that I need a couple of stiff drinks.
