The Office - April 24

All the rental talk/disagreement made me curious. I found a website for apartment rentals in Manhattan. There were no listings for one-bedroom apartments for less than $1500 in Midtown, Upper East Side, West Side, or Downtown. Searching “all areas” found lots of one BRs in that range, in Harlem, the Bronx, Washington Heights, Sugar Hill, Inwood. Are those areas considered to be Manhattan?

As you can tell, I know nothing about NYC, except that it costs a lot to live there.

No, the Bronx is the Bronx, not Manhattan. It’s everything north of the Harlem River. The other neighborhoods you mentioned are so far uptown in Manhattan, they might as well be off the island.

Well, it’s not a 1-bedroom, it’s a studio (a little box with a kitchenette, bathroom, bed, and a couch - around here, we call that a hotel suite). There’s a couple of those listed for $1400-$1500 in UWS or UES on nycdwellers.com. The cheapest was $950 in Hamilton Heights, and I don’t see anything that implies that Ryan’s building is not in that area, but I don’t know NYC geography at all.

I would highly doubt that character is supposed to be living in Hamilton Heights. I also don’t think that was supposed to be an example of a small apartment. It’s a pretty normal studio here really, if not above average, and if I remember correctly it had a nice view.

I checked the DVR and there is a closed storefront with a website in his building:

The address is E62nd street between 1st & 2nd Ave which places Ryan on the Upper East Side. Which is about what I would expect.

Maybe Ryan shares the place with his Hobbit friend the coke dealer. Then he could afford a pricey neighborhood.
