  40. Polenta

I will add () for not kosher, and since I’ve kept kosher all my life, that means there has never been any possibility of my eating this. A fairly high percentage of the list isn’t kosher.

  1. Venison Good, not as exciting as I expected
  2. Nettle tea
  3. Huevos rancheros
  4. Steak tartare Not as bad as I thought it’d be, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it
  5. (Crocodile)
  6. (Black pudding)
  7. Cheese fondue
  8. Carp Why is this such a big deal?
  9. Borscht Oddly, I prefer it hot
  10. Baba ghanoush Yum
  11. (Calamari)
  12. Pho I really want to try this, but I don’t know of any kosher Vietnamese restaurants, and haven’t made it myself yet
  13. PB&J sandwich I’ve never liked peanut butter with bread.
  14. Aloo gobi
  15. Hot dog from a street cart You’re not finding this kosher very easily (no, Hebrew National doesn’t count), and I’m not a big hot dog person, but I’d probably try one if it were available to me, just for the experience of it.
  16. (Epoisses) If it’s available kosher, I’d probably try it, but I haven’t liked the few stinky cheeses I’ve tried
  17. Black truffle You don’t see truffle much in kosher restaurants (they’re kosher, it’s just one of those things that hasn’t really crossed over yet), and I haven’t made the investment in one of them myself. But I’ll get there eventually.
  18. (Fruit wine made from something other than grapes) Probably not commercially available kosher, but I’d try it if someone made it
  19. (Steamed pork buns)
  20. Pistachio ice cream It’s not that I’m opposed, it’s just that it’s never sounded appealing enough for me to order
  21. Heirloom tomatoes I’ve never liked tomatoes. I keep trying home-grown, heirloom and not, because people keep telling me they’re so wonderful, but they’re not.
  22. Fresh wild berries Little bits of happiness
  23. Foie gras Not easily available kosher in this country - I’d have to specialty order it online, and haven’t. I don’t like other types of liver, but I’ll have to try this eventually.
  24. Rice and beans
  25. (Brawn, or head cheese)
  26. [del]Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper[/del] I originally thought I wouldn’t have any strikethroughs, since as long as it’s kosher, I’ve always said I’ll try anything once. But I’m not a masochist
  27. Dulce de leche
  28. (Oysters)
  29. Baklava A childhood pizza store favorite. (Kosher pizza stores tend to have a lot of Middle Eastern food.)
  30. Bagna cauda
  31. Wasabi peas Not my favorite, but I don’t violently hate them.
  32. (Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl)
  33. Salted lassi I love the mango ones, so always order those in Indian restaurants. I’ll have to try the salted ones.
  34. Sauerkraut
  35. Root beer float
  36. [del]Cognac with a fat cigar[/del] I don’t think this is fair - I’ve certainly had cognac, but I will never smoke
  37. Clotted cream tea (I think this is super-British, and not easily available kosher in America. But the possibility probably exists.)
  38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O
  39. Gumbo I’d have to make a shellfish- and pork-free version myself
  40. Oxtail I’ve never seen it kosher, so I’d have to special order it.
  41. Curried goat Goats are kosher, but there’s no demand for kosher goat, so I don’t think it’s commercially available, at least in America. I’d try it if I could.
  42. (Whole insects)
  43. Phaal I probably won’t like it (I don’t like spicy for the sake of spicy)
  44. Goat’s milk
  45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more It’s wasted on me, since I don’t particularly enjoy it
  46. (Fugu) I’m actually unclear as to whether it’s a kosher fish, but I highly doubt that a properly trained chef will ever be available to me in a kosher restaurant, and I ain’t tryin’ it with an amateur
  47. (Chicken tikka masala) Full of butter, and chicken+dairy is a kosher no-no
  48. (Eel)
  49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut I’ve never had a hot one, though
  50. (Sea urchin)
  51. Prickly pear
  52. Umeboshi I would almost certainly have to pickle them myself, so it’s unlikely
  53. (Abalone)
  54. Paneer
  55. (McDonald’s Big Mac Meal) Unless you permit the cheeseless kosher-in-Israel version, which I haven’t had either, but which is theoretically a possibility, in which case change this to asterisks
  56. Spaetzle
  57. Dirty gin martini I’d try it, but I’m not a big lover of alcohol
  58. Beer above 8% ABV ditto
  59. Poutine
  60. Carob chips Not inedible, but why?
  61. S’mores
  62. Sweetbreads
  63. Kaolin - is this a joke?
  64. Currywurst It may exist kosher somewhere, although it sounds unappealing
  65. Durian A strong aftertaste of rotting onion
  66. (Frogs’ legs)
  67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake
  68. Haggis
  69. Fried plantain
  70. (Chitterlings or andouillette)
  71. Gazpacho The no-tomato thing again.
  72. (Caviar and blini) Sturgeon aren’t kosher. I’ve eaten other kinds of roe, though.
  73. Louche absinthe
  74. Gjetost, or brunost If somebody makes a kosher version, I’d try it.
  75. (Roadkill)
  76. Baijiu
  77. (Hostess Fruit Pie)
  78. (Snail)
  79. Lapsang souchong Not my favorite, but drinkable.
  80. Bellini
  81. Tom yum
  82. (Eggs Benedict)
  83. (Pocky)
  84. (Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant.) If they make a kosher three star restaurant, I’m there.
  85. (Kobe beef) There’s kosher Wagyu beef (the same breed of cattle, but not from Kobe, where there’s no facilities for kosher slaughter), which I’ve had, and which is good.
  86. (Hare)
  87. Goulash
  88. Flowers
  89. (Horse)
  90. Criollo chocolate
  91. (Spam)
  92. (Soft shell crab)
  93. Rose harissa
  94. (Catfish)
  95. Mole poblano I don’t know how authentic the one I tried was, but it was good
  96. Bagel and lox But what about the cream cheese! You need the cream cheese!
  97. (Lobster Thermidor)
  98. Polenta
  99. [del]Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee[/del] I don’t like coffee, or anything coffee flavored (even mocha icing), so I can’t see ever spending the money to try it.
  100. (Snake)

29 Eaten, would eat again
5 Eaten, would not eat again
29 I’d try it if it were available

There are several species of locust discussed in the Bible as being kosher. However, nearly all Jewish communities long ago lost the chain of tradition that identified in a practical way what those species were. The Bible just gives names, and I can’t be certain to what modern species those terms correspond. (There’s a similar issue with birds - no characteristics are given, just a list of 24 non-kosher birds. Since we can’t definitively say what those non-kosher birds are anymore, only birds for which there’s a tradition of their being kosher are officially kosher nowadays.) Although the Yemenite community managed to maintain the kosher locust tradition, most non-Yemenite Orthodox people (including me) don’t eat locusts because it’s long lost from our own tradition.

I’m a little behind because I’ve been vegetarian most my adult life, and my few meat-eating years have been someplace without a great variety of food.

** The only thing standing between me and the three-star Michelin restaurant tasting menu is the fact that Michelin have yet to publish any Canadian guides. Travel is expensive enough without throwing a $500 meal into the equation… so until they deign to acknowledge that fine cuisine exists in the wilds of Toronto, I’m a bit stuck on that one. :frowning:
