It pisses me off (in a general, ranting at the gods way) that Cal and SC have had good and bad coaches at the same time for the past 12 seasons. If Tom Holmoe ( the worst coach in Cal history) could eke out a winning record against Paul Hackett – Tedford would’ve had the Bears in a couple of Rose Bowls. Dammit.
Any predictions for the weekend? Does Texas have a chance against OU? Florida is favored against a higher ranked LSU. Can the Pokes stop Missouri?
Most incredible stat of the season so far: Missouri hasn’t had a 3-and-out yet. So…if the pokes can stop Missouri, it’ll be the first time anybody has.
I don’t think my boys need to stop Mizzou, just slow em down.
Our offense can hang with em, we just need to not be playing catch up ball.
It’ll be a damn good game, and I just wish I could have made it out there.
(And I’m praying for a meteor strike at the 50 of the Cotton Bowl at 11:15.)
Hard to predict what is going to happen, really. I believe that at this level, any team on a given weekend can play pretty tough and give a higher-ranked team the business. Especially in rivalry games. You throw in all the emotion and the crowds and sensible predictions go out the window.
I predict this will be the most epic weekend for the game this season. I predict much beer drinking in my house as well.
I’m rootin’ for Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, SC and whoever plays Notre Dame!
- Texas will beat Oklahoma
- Florida over LSU.
- Yes. I"m NOT buying the Mizzou koolaid and Chase Daniel as the Messiah.
- North Carolina over Notre Dame. I so want to keep Notre Dame from being bowl eligible.
- Wisconsin over Penn State. Joe Paterno, just go away!
- I’d like to think Nebraska will beat Texas Tech, but it probably won’t happen. Still, TT is way overranked.
Jesus, Michigan sucks. The Gophers didn’t look too bad beating Illinois, though.
Oregon St. absolutely killed Washington St. Beaver QB Lyle Moevao had 4 picks, too. WSU has to be the worst team in college football. Has anyone played a tougher schedule than OSU? They’ve played 3 ranked teams(Penn St., Utah, and USC), losing the two games played on the road and winning at home. I can’t explain the loss to Stanford though. If they run the table, they’ll win the Pac-10 and it’s a real possibility because their tough match-ups are at Reser.
Given the way they killed my Beavs and others, IMO, Penn St. is #1.
The Univ. of Michigan has morphed into the Detroit Lions. They lost to Toledo for crying out loud. The only way to get interest up is massive betting.
Tigers blew up nuclear. Lions killed the season in 3 games. U of M is suddenly a disaster. Wings lost their first game. …C’mon Pistons. HELP
Cute, but not even close. Penn State: 48, Wisconsin: 7
Oklahoma, Missouri, and LSU all go down, and that should make Penn State #3 in the nation!
Long live JoePa!
GO PSU!
- Yes
- Yes
- Yes
- Yes
5 Ooops - Yes. But, it did show that TT will lose several games and find themselves in yet another minor bowl.
I don’t want to fan the flames of SEC vs the World (ok, maybe just a little)…during halftime of Florida - LSU, the CBS guys are zipping through scores, and the Stanford over Arizona final comes up. The only comment was a tsk tsk: “is this another indictment of the Pac-10?”
Well, since both teams are Pac-10, that’s a bit of a stretch. I guess Miss St over Vandy is an indictment of the SEC.
The Red River Shootout (not going for the PC rename) was a lot of fun to watch.
Your loss to Penn St is looking better and better. But I’ve got the Beavs losing to Arizona and Oregon, to finish 6-3 7-5, and going to the Vegas Bowl (if you have to go to a minor bowl, there are worse destinations…like El Paso)
Excuse me while I chug some orange koolaid before the rankings come out today.
We forced that 3 and out and actually have a defense.
Wow, things are looking very good indeed for Bama this year. I hope we meet Florida in the SEC championship, that would be an incredible game, especially after watching Florida absolutely dominate LSU all night yesterday.
Tommy Bowden has been fired as Clemson’s head coach. Story breaking in ATL & on ESPN.
Big game Thursday for BYU’s BCS hopes. They take on #24 TCU (6-1. Only loss was to Oklahoma) in Fort Worth. BYU’s offense has sputtered a bit against some mediocre opponents, and now faces the top defense in the nation. On the flip side, BYU’s defense is giving up only 10.2 points per game – #1 in the nation.
It may well be a low-scoring defensive battle that hinges on turnovers and special teams play. It’s available nationally on Versus.
BYU 7, TCU 32. That was painful. I hope TCU gets a good rankings bump out of it.
Oregon State beat Washington on their march to win the PAC 10 title. Penn St. is still my pick for #1, although Texas made a good case, too.
If I may, let me interrupt the week-by-week tracking and throw out a more general topic.
My team (Cal) is relatively new to big-time football. If you tracked quality over the past 50 years, the line would be fairly steady, wobbling between “bad” and “mediocre” with spikes to “good” in 1975 and 1991.
In the last 6 years, though, we’ve had winning records, bowl games, national rankings (at least at some point) every season.
But the fans (at least those online) are frustrated. Specifically, with our coach’s handling of a QB controversy; and more generally, with our inability to steadily progress to the point where we’re in a BCS bowl every year.
At what point do you stop saying “we’ve come so far!” and start saying “we haven’t come far enough”, and start getting pissed off at your coach? (Personally, I don’t think we’re there yet…but a lot of fans do.)
