The omnibus 2008 college football thread

Can you cite another season where this happened? One, maybe?

Huzzah! It’s Saturday! Time for the Pokes to beat those damn Aggies!

(And I get to work a concession stand for my student group. Boo. :o)

(Orange smilies only!)

Well, Ohio State should have an edge in today’s game against Wisconsin. The Wisconsin band has been suspended!

I thought that kind of thing only happened to the Stanfurd band. What did they do?

Something hazing ish. Saw a blurb about sexual assault/harassment of female members.

Not a good idea. The PAC 10 has a winning record against the SEC over the last 20 meetings, and that stands even if you take out USC and LSU.

No, you better stick with Div 1AA teams like App State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Tennessee.

The University of Arizona is putting the hurt on UW. Willingham is gone. Lane Kiffin to UW?

Nah, Tennessee is crossing their fingers & hoping to god that they land Lane Kiffin. Not sure why they’re so excited…I think they’re just desperate.

Nice to see the real USC take the field this week. Wonder where they were against Ore. St?

Didn’t ya just love that bomb down the middle? That was sweet!

AH, the old “random matchups are actually relevant” argument. Haven’t seen that garbage in a couple of days. The ACC fans are fond of using it.

As opposed to the SEC tradition of “Lets only look at the games where the SEC won big to prove the SEC always wins big”

I’m sorry, where did I do that?

The TD on 4th & 2 had me shaking my head in disbelief & admiration. Carroll has (a) cojones and (b) the execution to make him look like a genius.

By saying random matchups arn’t relevant ithus implying only select ones should be.

Wow, so “select matchups” = “only SEC wins” in your mind? I’m glad you’re a mindreader, because a career as a logician is not in the cards for you.

I didn’t mean omly select matchups are relevant, I meant there are many more things to take into consideration when talking about the relative strength of two conferences.

Having a discussion is typically more interesting than putting words into people’s mouths.

umm no.

The original comment was…

Which referred to the entirety of the recent data set. You then declared that was ‘random’. Disparaging the data set as though it didn’t tell the story. So please now tell us how you are going to spin that data set into your 'actually relvenat’set that shows the superiority of the SEC * without* selecting your wins?

Having a discussion starts with the party of the second part(you) responding to the party of the first part(Carmady) with facts, not snarky dismissial of stats that hurt your case.

Jesus Christ. I said the matchups were random, not the fucking data set. In other words the matchups were not #1 vs. #1, #2 vs. #2, etc.

Once again, you put words in my mouth and still won’t leave well enough alone about it. I never said that only SEC wins count, but you just won’t stop spouting off about it.

I wouldn’t necessarily call the matchups random. Both teams agreed to meet, and presumably both parties saw something to be gained. Sometimes, a team will agree to play a second team lightyears better than them just for national exposure, but I don’t think many SEC or Pac-10 teams fall into this category. (Maybe Arizona. Or Mississippi St., hee hee). Thus, I would contend that the “something to be gained” is that both teams in the game thought they at least had a decent chance of victory.

My point is that these matchups were not pulled out of a hat. In each case, the two teams agreed to the matchups, and the final contests we enjoyed were likely not always the first scenarios proposed. So, while not as rigorous as #1/#1, #2/#2 (which would break down when you get to SEC #s 11 and 12 anyway), it’s not random either.

No, it isn’t random in the truest sense of the word. They weren’t drawn out of a hat or anything. However, for the purposes of deciding the strengths of the respective conferences, they are of little value. That isn’t why the games were played to begin with. My ACC friends used to cite ACC/SEC records, even though 75% of the games used were Vandy vs. Duke.

On top of that, the time frame used has no particular rhyme or reason. All time, the SEC gets the nod. Over the past 3 weeks, the SEC gets the nod. Last 20 games, it’s the PAC-10.

I was fortunate enough to attend school during the “Tollner and Smith” era. But I do have a Rodney Peete football that was overlooked on a practice field.

Its official: I got tickets to go down and watch your Bears “get hosted” at the Colisieum!
