This has been a great weekend. Lots of upsets. Biggest upset? Can’t be Oregon St. over USC, because they did the same thing two years ago. I say the biggest upset is Ole Miss over Florida.
Seriously, Ole Miss? Who saw that one coming?
Yeah, well. See you in the Dome.
Maybe so. In any case, I think it says a lot that, out of all the schools in the SEC, I have nothing against Georgia. Classy fans, great team, and great coach. It was a tough loss for UGA tonight, but never count the Dawgs out.
Roll Tide Roll.
Georgia seems to be another team that always is ranked highly to begin to the season, and always seems to blow it.
My Cowboys went to 4-0 on the season today. Should be moving into the top 25 before beating a hapless Aggie squad next week on the road to taking on Chase Daniel at Mizzou.
The offense is firing on all cylinders, the defense is better than past years, but oh do I detest “bend but don’t break” in the 2nd half.
Same here. Georgia and Mississippi State are two teams I just can’t dislike.
Funny to hear you mention that…Cal plays BBDB all game, every game, and no topic* is more likely to cause Cal fans to foam at the mouth and bang their heads against the wall.
*except QB controversy, and “is Tedford a complete idiot?”
I am aware of the Rammer Jammer cheer, having read the book of the same name, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it – one of the frustrations of watching football on TV. The talking heads can’t shut up long enough to give the fans at home a little bit of the color they’re always talking about.
Going back to Thursday night, eight teams in the AP Top 25 lost this weekend. Normally that’d be a cause for extreme happiness, but for this 'Canes fan, it’s more like salt in the wound… because of Miami’s failure to capitalize on the opportunity to move up, both overall and in-conference.
Their loss to North Carolina (and their 3rd-string QB) is a tough one to take, especially given how strong Miami looked in the first quarter. All the analysts’ talk of Miami getting their swagger back underscored a bitter truth: Miami’s championship teams of yesteryear were (usually) able to compensate for their penalties by brilliant play on both offense and defense, but this team isn’t up to that level yet… but they’re still racking up the penalties. Hopefully that’s more a reflection of their overall youth and inexperience more than anything; second-year head coach Randy Shannon is too much of an old-school disciplinarian to tolerate mental errors and self-indulgent penalties.
And then there’s the QB situation. Miami’s got two really wonderful, but very young, QBs, both national stars and record-setters in high school. So far, Shannon’s trying to develop them both in tandem (although Marve is nominally the first stringer), and that’s probably the soundest strategy. But right now, it’s growing pains time, with no primary QB entrusted to play through an entire game.
I also like that Benjamin kid, who, even if he stops short of being the next Devin Hester (who is?), is certainly Devin Hester-ish, which can be pretty spectacular in its own right.
This isn’t Miami’s year, but wait 'til next… or the one after.
For the first time in a while.
- Florida State won
- Miami lost
- Florida lost.
FSU class of 1991:D
If you’ve heard it once, it’s very easy to pick out over the announcers. Unfortunately the present administration think it’s unbecoming of Alabama’s reputation, and the band isn’t allowed to initiate it. The crowd doesn’t have much trouble getting it going anyway, though.
After Bama beat the gators in 2006. I was at that game, and it was absolutely deafening. That was the hugest party night I’ve seen in Tuscaloosa in the five years I’ve lived here.
Speaking of which, I had to ride my bike home about two miles to get back to my house, and not a second did I not see people outside their houses holding their beers up, smiling, and screaming ROLL TIDE! I stopped over at one with one and we all sang the rammer jammer cheer together.
It’s a good day to live in Tuscaloosa.
I know there aren’t that many Spartan fans here, but what the hey we’re 4-1 and nearly in the top 25. I know, we have a loss so because we’re not in the SEC we’re eliminated from title game contention. I mainly wanted to chime in to say that I saw something in the MSU game yesterday that I don’t think I’ve seen before- a 97 yard touchdown pass by IU turned into an MSU safety because of holding in the end zone. It was a good call, no doubt about it. But I’ve never seen it take a TD off the board before. IU was lucky anyway since two plays earlier the refs gave the IU runner a lot of benefit of the doubt in getting out of the end zone on what should have been a safety.
And Bama’s ranked number two in the AP poll. I honestly expected 3, but that’s a nice surprise.
Well, Alabama and Oklahoma were the two most dominant teams this week. I"m not buying Missouri yet. LSU was a bit uneven against Mississippi State.
And the Pokes are 21!
With the #1 rushing offense in the country! I’m drinkin’ the koolaid!
I see that ESPN College GameDay will be coming to us this weekend from…surprise! Auburn vs Vanderbilt. Wow, that’s new and refreshing.
5 out of 6 games this year have featured an SEC team. They should just go ahead and change the name to SEC GameDay.
Man, that was like a real bad flashback to Thursday, except this time I was rootin’ for the winning team (and UGA got owned harder than SC did
).
And as predicted earlier in the thread, the praise for the SEC was pretty thick. One guy said something like, “Well, they are all so good that the problem is they beat each other up!”
So, what do you propose? Schedual all patsies from lower confrences? A few years back, when Cal, Oregon, Oregon St, Arizona St. and UCLA were all pretty tough, nobody seemed to be too worried about the Pac-10 cannabilizing itself.
Eh, whatever. Its a long season…
Hey, gato…looks like one of the 9 dwarves just sank an axe in your plumed helmet.
But enough rivalry smack…I actually want to come to the defense of the Pac-10. I will admit that the SEC is the strongest conference at the moment but I read an interesting stat: The Pac-10 has 13 OOC losses this season. 11 of those have come to teams that are receiving votes in the polls…so just 2 of those losses are “ugly” (UNLV - ASU, New Mexico - Arizona).
Against BCS opposition, the Pac-10 is 5-6. The SEC is 5-4. The problem, apparently, is the Pac’s non-BCS competition is coming from the MWC which is looking really good this year.
That sounds like a grand idea! Do you suppose the Pac 10 would agree to let us schedule them, though?
This is would like to see! But then whos gonna play Grambling and Alcorn State?
