(unless there’s already one called that, in which case we’ll call this "the OTHER Pay-It-Forward MMP)
So, yesterday morning as I was about to leave work, I decided to check GasBuddy to find out if gas what still priced at $2.739 at Costco. Although it was, I was shocked to find it at $2.699 at an independent station. I set course for the independent station with a stop along the way to pick up cash so I could be assured of getting the best price. When I got to the station I was happy to see there was no line. Also a little confused.
My confusion dissipated when I saw that the service window was closed for another hour, and I would not be able to pay for my gas with cash. Indications were that I could still use my debit card, so I look to see what the non-cash price was. Hey, what do you know? Still $2.699! Happily, I began filling my tank.
While I was doing this, I saw an older gentleman and his wife drive up in a pickup truck. The man got out and walked over to the service window. He seemed really disappointed that the service window was closed. I told him that the debit/credit card price was the same as the cash price, but that didn’t comfort him at all, as he had no debit card, only cash. “No problem,” I told him. “Just give me the cash you want to spend and I’ll put it on my debit card.”
He handed me $30 and I went over to his pump and activated it with my card. “I’m a trusting soul,” I said. “Just pump in $30 and go on your way.” I finished pumping my gas and decided to treat myself to a milkshake at the Del Taco 24 hour drive thru next door. As I waited in line at the drive thru I saw the gentleman approaching my car from behind.
I rolled down the window, and he told me “It looks like it’s putting in more than $30.” "So stop the pump I said. it honestly didn’t occur to me that he didn’t know to do that. “Oh well,” I told myself. “.his gas tank can’t be that big. I’ll just take the hit.”
As I emerged from the drive-thru, however, he flagged me down again.
“It came to $39.42” he said. “Don’t worry about it,
just pay it forward.” I told him. He insisted on giving me 7 more dollar bills, go.
“Okay,” I’m murmured to myself as I drove away. “Pay THAT forward.”
