I played the original Resident Evil on the Playstation and found it to be… alright, I suppose. I thought that Alone in the Dark was far more atmospheric and frightening, despite being a good five? six? years older.
If you decide to go ahead and get a PS2, check out Onimusha, which is basically Resident Evil with samurai. A sequel just came out, but I haven’t played it yet. I liked it a lot more than RE, mostly thanks to a more coherent plot and far less “Engrish” dialogue.
I liked it but never understood what all the fuss was about. I guess if you’re really into the horror survivor genre its a good game, but I thought the gameplay could have been better.
I think the best there is is Quake III, its three years old and still keeps me coming back for more. Although I justed dled the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo and damn does it look and play good.
Another contestant in the survival-horror genre is Eternal Darkness, which you probably won’t get to because it’s on the Gamecube. It’s quite fun, if a bit short.
For shooters… well, we could start a war over it. But I like Unreal Tournament (even though the 2003 demo barely chugs along on my machine) and System Shock 2.
Don’t forget about the older, more offbeat titles that should be quite inexpensive by now (Sacrifice and Deus Ex to name a couple).
The original Alone in the Dark was something hellaciously special. Still is, if you can get past the primitive (by today’s standards–when it came out, it was amazing) graphics, and can get it to run. Still the most nervous I’ve ever been playing through a game.
Plus, once you learned where everything in the game was, you could blow through it in about thirty minutes. And if you got the pattern down right, you could slap Deep Ones around.
Actually, the best thing about Alone in the Dark was playing it the first time without realizing that it was part of the Cthulhu mythos, and suddenly realizing, “Holy shit, I’m fighting nightgaunts!”
Pity the sequels jettisoned the Lovecraft stuff for cheesy voodoo plots.
As for best PC game ever, I’d have to say any incarnation of Civilization. I’ve had one version or another of this game on every computer I’ve ever owned since I got my first pre-pentium 486/33, and have still play it regularly. There are other games I’ve enjoyed more on the first run through, but for sheer aggregate enjoyment, it’s pretty much impossible to beat Civ.
I’d also suggest checking out Silent Hill for the PlayStation. I thought it was better than Resident Evil, but quite a bit more confusing. There is also Silent Hill 2 for the PS2 that is good, but not quite up to the original. (I think there is some version or another out for the XBox but haven’t seen it.)
